CinemaWins brought me to you a few years ago. And I can never thank them enough. You have made my crappy days less crappy. Every time I’m feeling down, I go down the “Mikey Tunnel”, just listening why some movies are interesting / important, why they mattered, why should I rewatch them, etc… And when the day is especially a downer, I jump onto Deep Dive to laugh and have fun. Rambling summarized, thank you for existing. You have saved my life more than once.

I think I’ve watched more films made this year during this year than I have since maybe high school. Somewhere along the way I fell out of watching new stuff, growing comfortable in nostalgia, but video essays like yours have made me excited to see the art people are making right now. Thanks for encouraging me to think critically about media and to find something beautiful in everything I see.

This video made me realize that the Googly Eye and the Everything Bagel really *are* the opposites of each other. A black void with a white center; a white void with a black center.

With Nope I kind of like that Emerald comes off as kind of...well, self-sabotaging, while OJ is a bit too unassuming and a bit of a doormat. They both change over the course of the movie - actual mini personality arcs! - with Emerald learning when to be aggressive and when to run the heck away, and OJ learning when to open his mouth and tell people to let him do his damn job.
@Peoples3324 Жыл бұрын
Love this list, EEAAO truly is a masterpiece - and I'd never caught that bit about the googly eye and the bagel being visual inverses of each other before, so cool! I'd really like to hear your thoughts on Tar, if you've seen it!

Loved this. Have to say Glass Onion reminded me more of Vonnegut than Christie. Felt a bit Cat’s Cradle. Very much a murder in the karass. Also has an Ice-9 like element.

I am super glad you ranked Prey so highly. I was watching the original predator on Disney+ and got it recommended. I had never heard of it before so going into it I wasn't even aware that it was part of the predator series. But it's just so good. The action and visuals are great and the story is good too. The bear scene is still burned into my mind. It was also one of the few recent movies where the protagonist just happens to be female instead of it feeling like the studio decided on it for attention.

''So, even though you have broken my heart yet again, I wanted to say, in another life, I would have really liked just doing laundry and taxes with you.'' - Everything Everywhere All At Once That line is just so heavy to me, it reminds me to be present, in the moment and treasure it. We can spend a lifetime chasing our dreams alone without any true satisfaction of accomplishing our goals, but the most mundane things can become magical with the one you love like something as simple as doing taxes and laundry together can be all that matters in the world because your doing it together not alone. You don't need material wealth to understand that, you need spiritual wealth and a life spent with the ones you love :P

I am indeed commenting to fuel engagement! I'm incrediblly bad at leaving comments on KZbin videos because I always stress about whether I can properly convey the throughts I feel online without being misconstrued and I feel like I should write an entire essay to communicate the depth of my emotions and then I get tired just thinking of the daunting task ahead of me. Anyway, all this to say that I've subscribed to this channel ever since CinemaWins recommended y'all and I have been a fan since. This channel is genuinely part of my top five favourite channels on KZbin and I love your takes on everything and hearing your thoughts. You've changed my mind on a couple of movies and made me think deeper about the art of film and cinematography. Thank you for your videos! I was super happy to also see "Not Okay" on this list because I feel like not a lot of people have watched it despite it being so prescient and clever without being condescending. It's far better than other "oh, social media is the worst" "cancel culture blahblah" type movies. Zoey Deutch is amazing it in as the 'unlikeable protagonist' and it really made you think more of how the online community and the modern persona is fostered. I also loved Top Gun: Maverick, EEAAO, Glass Onion, RRR, The Banshees of Inisherin and will be sure to check out the other movies on this list. Also, do watch Avatar the blue people movie simply for the spectacle of CGI on screen - it's a blast. I hope you have a fantastic year up ahead! I can't wait to tune in to the other videos you have in store for us.

Yay! I loved NOPE so much. So much else going on as well, but I was blown away by its ability to show that feeling where an absolutely deadly wild animal, like a tiger or something, is just so beautiful there’s a really dumb part of my brain that wants to stand there and admire it, rather than do the whole “try not to get brutally killed” thing.

What I like about the presentation of The Batman is the big heavy boot clomps at appropriate times. He's perfected the mystique to the point where he enters the scene like a T-Rex and seems invincible to the bad guys he beats up. But for all this, he's caught off guard when he is challenged on why he does this and for whom. It's a flaw from which the Riddler does not suffer, and in fact, Batman cannot thwart his plans until he catches up to Eli Sunday and shifts his priorities.

One of my favourite films of the year was Chinonye Chuckwu’s Till starring Danielle Deadwyler, Jalyn Hall, Frankie Faison, Haley Bennet and Whoopi Goldberg. I felt this was very much snubbed by the Academy and several awards as it received not a single nomination from the Oscars, not even for Deadwyler’s stunning performance, for which she most certainly deserved a Best Actress Oscar. If you haven’t seen it, then do so if you get the chance. Incidentally, one of its producers was long time James Bond producer, Barbara Broccoli. Other favourites of mine this year include: The Fabelmans Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery All Quiet On The Western Front (Im Westen Nichts Neues) The Batman The Banshees of Inisherin Black Panther: Wakanda Forever RRR Everything Everywhere At Once Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio and Elvis
