Film at Lincoln Center

Күн бұрын

For the final Film Comment Talk of 2018, Matt Dillon came to the Film Society of Lincoln Center to talk about his new film, The House That Jack Built, directed by Lars von Trier. The film stars Dillon as a serial killer who recounts a series of his murders over several years. Dillon talked about playing a depraved character and working with von Trier. Maddie Whittle of the FSLC Programming department moderated the dialogue. The House That Jack Built is released by IFC Films.
The Film Society of Lincoln Center is devoted to supporting the art and elevating the craft of cinema. The only branch of the world-renowned arts complex Lincoln Center to shine a light on the everlasting yet evolving importance of the moving image, this nonprofit organization was founded in 1969 to celebrate American and international film. Via year-round programming and discussions; its annual New York Film Festival; and its publications, including Film Comment, the U.S.’s premier magazine about films and film culture, the Film Society endeavors to make the discussion and appreciation of cinema accessible to a broader audience, as well as to ensure that it will remain an essential art form for years to come.

A royal masterpiece. its soo layered. It has many lectures and many films inside of the film. He's inviting you to laugh and might even be laughing at you or not. We should all laugh and think and feel. The second lecture talks clearly about failing as an artist. A true gem that is bound to be misunderstood for a long, long time.

@@dimitrakapa4887 there is absurdist humor in the film, and at the end of the day is a divine comedy, since it has a happy ending. But, if you're laughing at the homicide, infanticide, mutilation, and torture scenes then that is a defense mechanism for the authentic feeling, which is disturbed horror.

I think there is way too much attention on this being about a serial killer. If you know anything about Von Triers movies knows that he is attempting to invite the viewer into a real world of violence. The violence played out every day in this country and how we ignore it until personally confronted.

Well it demonstrates what a lazy culture we have become. Cinema is convenient and should tell convenient stories. They see a serial killer, hearing voices, talking about art, so that's what they get, don't bother to look at it from different perspectives for god sake or ask any questions, just stick with what you see and leave it at that.

So many people have a romanticized view of serial killers, there's a real fascination with them these days, it's probably something I'm guilty of as well. I think this film tries to show just what it is being romanticized and how disturbing it actually is when it's shoved in front of your face.

After the first impression, which is usually shocking, the film grows bigger and you are moving to thinking you were cheated and maybe this a Masterpiece. Lars Von Trias movies have so many layers.. And you are fool if you keep on.. First Impression.

I watched that movie too late at night that by the ending it exceeded my bed time. I was so traumatized and couldn’t just go to bed. So I just started saying nonsense like “skibidi bop dee boo” etc from some place within and typed into KZbin skibidi something or other and then this hilarious music video was presented to me by a band called “Little Big” and it calmed me down enough to go to bed

You know, mr Lars is a true artist in his own way. The way of how he's reflected and mocked the society is a something.. As for underrated and the stuff, i'd refer to the guys like Bethoveen, Davinci, Allan Poe, who didn't get that amount of recognition that they deserved when they were alive. That's our society, people start to care when you are already gone. So for those, who se the world from the same angle - there is no such a thing as underrated, there is art and there is something that is not the art.

Spoiler: In the End the self-claimed artist, higher being, the miss understood Nietzsche's Übermensch, has to see that chaos, death, complexity of things fallen apart, the "beauty" the symmetry of a flower that falls apart through poison, all this called negative things, may look beautiful and look like something great, something strong, something mystirious, but even in an materialistic point of view there is only chaos and order, death and life. And only Life is creation. Life is symbolic for Order and vis versa. Without Order/Life there would be no art.. art only exists through the complex system of cooperation. Without the cooperation of our biology, without cells who work toghter there is only chaos.. no system. So everything a deathist, nihilist, a misanthropist, satanist or nature lawyer thinks is something great is only the glorification of the simplest system, the simplest rule of living together: The strong with high skill in killing survive, aka Darwin. They cant think of something bigger, higher system like society, civilisation, intergalactical alliance, a living universe or something else. It's like everyone else climbed the stairs to more complex forms of living together and they go back to the roots, to times where everything was more simple. I know everything is valued through a certain perspective, would you give more value to chaos or to order.

This was an extremely interesting read, thank you for posting. I found the film very intriguing with how it managed to combine so many aspects of chaos and order. Through art, war, love, music, life, and death, Lars really has a beautiful way of stringing together these concepts all while telling the story of a man descending into hell.
