I love that you react to movies that are outside of the usual "KZbin Reactor Canon", cuz EVERYBODY reacts to Indiana Jones, Star Wars, 80s action flicks, meanwhile you're doing the Yorgos Lanthimos filmography?! LOVE IT. Keep the art house hits coming. I would love to see you react to older movies as well. The 1970s is probably the greatest decade in American Film.

@@JamesVSCinema You should do Bad Boy Bubby. It's an art house film that's definitely not for everyone but filmmakers tend to love it and it's often cited as one of the greatest Australian films. It used innovative audio techniques and had about 30 different DOPs, one for each scene in the middle, which really conveys the main character's bewilderment. Be warned, though, that the first half hour or so is difficult to watch, especially once you realise that the main character is not mentally ill in the usual sense but completely broken by a lifetime of some of the most depraved abuse imaginable and that what you don't see must have been so much worse. I don't know if it's available on Netflix or anything, so if you can't find it on DVD there's a high quality KZbin upload. Another excellent film "outside of the usual KZbin Reactor Canon" is Leaving Las Vegas. Super low budget (to the point that some of it was filmed illegally because they couldn't afford permits) and with a supporting cast of "wait, was that... ?" actors and musicians, there's a reason Nicholas Cage won the Best Actor Oscar for it. Again, the cinematography and direction really does a great job of conveying the world.

@21:18 Yes, she had a stroke. What's left unsaid but is implied in the very final images, is that Queen Anne died within a few days of her stroke. With a change of monarch, Abigail lost her position but went on to live a quiet life at her country estate until she was in her 60s. Abigail's 'victory' over Sarah was very short lived but she nonetheless managed to return her own status.

22:55 that's gout, something that still affects people today, though we understand it can be somewhat controlled through a change in your diet and some medication that reduces the inflammation. It used to affect mostly rich people because obesity and fatty foods contribute to the increase of uric acid in the blood. It's also very likely the queen had stress-induced hypertension, given her mental state and ongoing depression. I worked for someone who had gout and he often complained of pain in his legs because of it, especially in more stressful days. He had to go on a short diet from time to time to feel better.

This film is a masterpiece. It’s so cynical about power, beauty and wealth and the conversation about love is really well handled. I would say Rachel’s character does read like Azula in her venom and cunning, but motives are so different and their sense of self worth, I loved that she didn’t even respond to the final letter.

I agree with you on the lighting. Most of the lighting is natural, which gives it a different aesthetic than most movies nowadays. It reminds me of Barry Lyndon, another period piece that's directed by Stanley Kubrick. If you haven't seen Barry Lyndon, I'd HIGHLY recommend it.

Also, good job on making that parallel between Rachel's character and Azula! :0 You're so right! They have that same quality that makes them a villain you love to see.. although in this case, whether Rachel's character was truly a villain is debatable. I DIED WHEN YOU SAID THAT SCENE IN THE WOODS WAS THE PHYSICAL MANIFESTATION OF A GUY TRYING TO GET INTO A GIRL'S DMS OMG!! oh my god i love this movie so much! what a nice surprise haha :) btw some historical background - queen anne was suffering from gout (a form of arthritis) and a bunch of other illnesses her whole life, and that most likely affected her mental state as well. but despite that, i think she wasn't really as easy to manipulate as this movie portrayed her (she was a little naive at times and relied on her favourites but i don't think it was to the extent we see in the film). she's not one of the most popular queens of england because she wasn't as charming as victoria or elizabeth, for example, but she was still a decent ruler at times. after her relationship with lady sarah went sour, sarah wrote and said a bunch of nasty things about anne that painted her in a bad light and made her look very incompetent, like "she certainly meant well and was not a fool, but nobody can maintain that she was wise, nor entertaining in conversation. she was ignorant in everything but what the parsons had taught her when a child". sarah was also the one who put out there in the public the idea of anne having an intimate relationship with abigail :D anne's wikipedia page has some interesting additional information, if you're curious. a lot of the film's material is based on and influenced by the actual historical events, but there's only speculation about the relationship between these three women, and lanthimos took some creative liberties too. that said, i am glad they went the ridiculous, over-the-top route because it makes this film so damn enjoyable paired with some well added depressing undertones. plus. the direction is just fantastic! love every single aspect, from the costumes and sets, to the visuals, dialogue and acting

22:40 I don't think so. See, the thing is she can't. She only got where she is now thanks to the queen. The Queen made her and can break her, everything she gives her can be taken away, "so fast it's not even funny" (Of Mice and Men) because no matter who's the favourite, she's still the queen, whether this is an absolute monarchy or a constitutional monarchy.

Awesome reaction, glad you loved this movie! Yorgos Lanthimos is one of the best filmmakers in the world right now, hands down. And this is one of the best examples ever of how to take a true story period-piece and turn it into something stylistically fresh and daring. I was kinda surprised you weren't laughing more though, this movie is hilarious to me at least until it wants to get REAL serious. Such dark and kinda mean-spirited humor throughout, but I love that about it, I can't help but laugh at how cruel they are to each other. It exposes the potential greed, jealousy, sadness, and wretchedness at the core of humanity by making us entertained and laughing at it, but then showing us where that road eventually leads. The film is so brilliant because the characters are so well drawn. You can completely understand how all of them get to the place they're in by the end, power and greed ultimately corrupting all of them and forcing us as the viewer to reconsider our allegiances. What a sad and disturbing ending though. The two of them, both morally bankrupt at that point, doomed to a shared existence of suffering (represented by the rabbits) and using each other in a game of power to get what they think they want or deserve.

Hey thanks for commenting brotha! Yeah I had a really good time with the film. The comedy in it was more so “chuckle comedy” at least for me! It’s also pretty damn difficult to get me to burst out laughing unless something absurd or random happens where I’m questioning reality hahaha

I adore the look of this film too but I've always wondered about the use of the fish eye lenses beyond just being a nice subversion of how a typical period piece is filmed. but I think seeing the scenes that use it and especially the first scene we see shot that way (Emma Stones arrival) I think it's very much representing the warped and distorted nature of those scenes and the characters and politics within them. Emma Stone's arrival pretty much sets the entire course of events off and having the first shot of her (or at least the carriage she arrives in) as a fish eye lens, something immediately off putting, is clever. I only mention this because I've seen some criticisms of the film aimed at the style being flashy but ultimately not actually meaning much beyond that, but I think Lanthimos is too smart a filmmaker to fall into hollow aesthetics. Sorry this was a long comment lol but I like your commentary and the discussion here! one of the best reactors on here, keep up the great content!

Bate , by Mark Jenkin it's about the gentrification and poverty of a fishing town in England. It's filmed in a 60s style black and white I think to confuse the viewer of what time it is to show the poverty of the fishermen trade the rugged looks of the locals compared to the home buyers who are only their a month a year and have made the place a ghost town in out of season months. Great pick! Love the reactions :) A couple of film suggestions: Under The Silver Lake (David Robert Mitchell 2019): A strange and humorous thriller with some exceptional (unique?) filmmaking. On release it got a negative reception, but has garnered a cult following since then and a lot of debate surrounds it. The Piano Teacher (Michael Haneke 2001): a potent character study of a piano teacher with issues. One of the all time greats imo and would surely provide us with some entertaining reactions haha.

Great pick! Lanthimos is such an interesting filmmaker. I know you already watched The Killing of a Sacred Deer but after The Favorite, The Lobster is my favorite. I've yet to see Dogtooth but I've heard good things. With regards to The Favourite, special mention goes out to Olivia Coleman, who is such a phenomenal talent. She's done so much great dramatic work (Tyrannosaur!) but I've always known and loved her as a comedian first.

The most interesting part about the angle , is that the camera is set on the same height as the eye view of the ducks , after watching the whole movie , and think about this again , it's kind of the ah ha moment. All the movies done by this director kind of force the audience the view it twice to understand the whole movie. The first time raise lots of question , the second times is the exploration. Unless you really like the movie , or it will be difficult to watch it again. Killing of a sacred deer is my favourite of all , it has a deeper depth on the details , and it is easily for people with a religion to relate to. Where as the other two might favor some special type of audience , I guess.

6:37 This blooming light throughout the film melted my heart, it's so beautiful. 16:06 And the music confirms that "that was the end of the discussion" lol. 23:24 Yeah, that ending didn't really work for me on first watch, either. Awesome reaction, as always!
