The movie was actually shot in 35mm and it was real black and white, it wasn't shot in color and then desaturated which made it more difficult to shoot on location because the ISO was 80, thanks to that they had to use lights that were super fucking bright. In the movie it looks like the candle at 9:00 is normal, but people on set said the lights were blinding. Rob and Willem have said on interviews that sure, it looks like they're seeing each other without problem in the movie, but in reality they could barely see their faces. The camera used in the movie was more modern, but the lenses they used were from 1930, they had to send them to Panavision, were they optically adjusted the lenses so they could be used. They also built the lighthouse in the movie. You're the first person in youtube I've heard mentioning H.P. Lovecraft and I agree so much! That was one of my thoughts as well when I watched the movie.
@Edninety

Read an interesting theory somewhere that Robert Pattinson's character is stuck in a purgatory and this is sort of a test to see if he goes to heaven or hell. William Dafoe's character says to not bother the seagulls but he ignores the message and kills it anyway. That's when things start going wrong. He also told him not to go to the top of lighthouse and that was the last straw. Robert Pattinson's character fails the test and is sent to hell which is being eaten alive by those seagulls for eternity. Am sure there are tons of other theories as well but I like this one the most.
@JamesVSCinema
@JamesVSCinema 4 жыл бұрын
First off, thank you for sharing! That sounds like a plausible theory and one I have no problem going with. Looking back in hindsight now I can kind of piece together that story with The LightHouse. I also felt some Greek mythology in here as well. Sort of Prometheus tale and how he stole something from the gods and is now doomed to have birds eat away at his flesh. Some pretty crazy theories!

This film is essentially the story of Prometheus stealing fire from Zeus and being doomed to an eternity of having his liver eaten by an eagle(a seagull in this case). A modern Shakespearean horror deeply infused with Greek Mythology. I highly recommend the VVitch by Robert Eggers and also keep your eye out for his upcoming Viking movie The Northman which is inspired by Hamlet!

Got the pleasure of seeing this twice in theaters. The atmosphere and claustrophobia is amplified on the big screen. With The Witch and the Lighthouse, Robert Eggers has become one of the young directors im most excited about. The attention to detail and effort he puts in is simply masterful. I believe he shot this movie with special vintage lenses and that it was a huge undertaking since they required so much extra lighting on set. It's been reported that he might be making a Nosferatu adoption but it hasn't gotten of the ground yet. Thanks for another great reaction. Glad you enjoyed it and im looking forward to your reaction for The Witch.

It's amazing to see two complete different actors come together and the chemistry it produces. Dafoe is a very refined polished actor and Patterson is more of a character actor. It's funny to here them talk about each other, like how Dafoe wanted to rehearse and Patterson was hesitant and wanted to save it for filming.

Really tasteful choice having your facecam also be in black and white! This is one of the most striking films I have seen for a while. The symbolism and themes of two lonely men, their sexual frustration, paranoia, Greek mythology, and suspicion of each other makes this film one of the wildest portrayals of "cabin fever" I have seen. Add to this the ambiguous nature of the Mermaid and the Lighthouse itself, is it an eldritch horror? Two men going mad from isolation? Robert Eggers and Ari Aster both make movies that seem tailored for me.

If you've never seen The Fountain, I recommend checking it out. Darren Aronofsky has had highs and lows in his career, but that movie was his passion project that he pursued for over 5 years to get made. Every frame in that movie ties into dozens of other frames like a finely woven cloth. It's essentially a 70 million dollar art house flick with every shot meticulously planned out and framed with both intention and in service to its story. People usually either love it or hate it, but judging from everything I've seen on your channel, I think you'd vibe with it. As an aside, Hugh Jackman serves up the performance of his life in it.

For sailors, and those living on an island, the lighthouse is everything - islanders were often former sailors, so they knew the importance of the lighthouse in keeping their fellow men safe. Years ago the wickies kept the light going no matter what - they'd haul buckets of 2 - 50lb buckets of whale oil up 300 stairs 4 times/day to keep it lit. Lighthouses were thought to have their own soul - even now, we still love them (few are ever torn down even though they're long out of use - yet we even pour money into saving them). On the island I was living on there were 2 lighthouses, one on each side of the island, that were now automated. On foggy nights I'd be sitting on the ground outside my cottage at 3 am drinking rum with my boyfriend, and we'd watch the beams of light from the lighthouses sweep overhead. We'd talk a little, listen to the both fog horns sounding , watch the beams of light... There was something dream-like, surreal, to it. I have 5,000 at sea -I worked on fishing boats (like on Deadliest Catch), and when we'd go out to sea the lighthouse was the last thing we'd see heading into the unknown, and then coming back home I'd usually be behind the wheel (as 1st Mate - the captain would give me a swig of rum from his personal flask - which is a huge sign of honor and respect- and he'd say, "Hannah, take us home") and when I'd see the beam of light from the lighthouse, I knew we were almost back to shore - back to safety, back to dry land, back to a comfortable bed and a hot shower. Anyway, if you don't believe in ghosts, go to any lighthouse you can visit and go up in when they first open in the morning, when things are still and few people are around. The St. Augustine Lighthouse is nearly a guarantee you'll experience something paranormal; every time I've gone you could clearly hear footsteps coming up the stairs. Once at the top I head footsteps climbing the ladder, and a moment later a disembodied voice said, "excuse me" to me - presumably the wickie had to squeeze by me to keep tending the light.

The sound from the lighthouse is called a foghorn, it's an added measure in place if the fog is too dense for sailors to see the light from the lighthouse, they can at least hear the sound coming from it. I moved to a small coastal town in Oregon when I was 7. It was at the mouth of a river and the jetty was just down the hill from our first house there. I still remember the first few nights after we moved in. You would literally hear that same sound echo through the night air for 5 seconds, at 120-second intervals. Eventually, your brain just learns to tune it out, but yeah, this film brought back some fond childhood memories for me.

It’s deffos intentional. The film is written with a sense of reaaaaally black humour, with all the slapstick stuff and irony and over the top reactions by the characters. It’s pretty dark and when I saw it in the cinema, I got the impression that people didn’t know whether they should laugh or not, but it’s totally intentional

The noise is the fog horn - and yes, they sound EXACTLY like that; they're VERY loud, and are set to go off at a certain tempo - that tells sailors at sea, just by sound, the identification of the lighthouse they're passing.

3:52 Yes it's the lighthouse, it has a rotating light and horn to warn ships, in treacherous conditions, of the rocks. They're not needed so much now due to technology but they had to be manned in case something went wrong with the light/horn in the lighthouse. By all reports a very lonely job cos you were usually stuck on some rocky island somewhere. 5:35 Dread?

The sight of you, sitting there, mouth open, wondering what to say reminds me pretty much exactly how I also reacted to first seeing this film. I was tempted to watch an on-line trailer when The Lighthouse was released, but I didn't. A lucky choice - the actual movie landed on me like a ton of bricks with no forewarning. And that's how it should be.

The lighthouse light is likely an electrical light (driven by the generator they are shuffling coal into thru-ought the film (also the horn that is sounding is to warn passing ships from getting too close to prevent them running aground)), so at the end where Winslow stretch his hand into the light he would have gotten electrocuted, hence the screaming and being unable to pull away from the light until he simply collapses down the ladder/stairs from loosing all motor-control...

Just found out your channel through your City of God video (because I'm from Brazil it might've been recommended to me) Your content is really good, subscribed! :) In case no one ever responded to your question, the horn you hear throughout the film is an old Fog Horn to warn ships not only with the light to guide, but also that there might be rocks that they can't see sticking out and about I liked your editing touch by changing your webcam feed to look like old style film too!

Great reaction video James! Loved this movie. The acting. The artistry. It's exceptional. I also think Robert Eggers owes a debt of gratitude to David Lynch. To me there's a very clear connection between this movie and Eraserhead. Particularly the use of surrealism to evoke horror, and also harnessing the power of black and white photography to craft a truly unsettling atmosphere.
