Odenkirk has talked about the Walt/Saul scene as Jimmy realizing he’s wound up tied to someone exactly like Chuck again. Mentally ill, narcissistic and incredibly brilliant - depends on Jimmy for help but has no respect for him, especially as a legitimate lawyer.

Yes absolutely, you can draw so many comparisons between Chuck and Walter. This series really recontextualizes the relationship between Jimmy and Walter, and also Mike and Jesse. Walter because of his similarities to Chuck and Jesse because of his similarities to Nacho

Oh wow, I hadn't caught that!!! thank you! If you think about it, had he gotten closer to Chuck, he would have enjoyed his brother being alive, and he may have started in HHM from the bottom, and he was so brilliant that he was bound to become a very important member of HHM, maybe even make it HHMM. Howard even begged him to come back to HHM before he threw bowling balls at his car. It would have been the perfect life for him. He even had Kim for crying outloud.

Saul Goodman getting the Vet's Black Book, and having Mike bring him candidates for employment in the Black Book do demonstrate that Saul is basically running organized crime in Albuquerque. He doesn't run Gus or anything like that, but he's allowed not only to exist and continue, but Mike is a conduit between them as both consigliere and enforcer for both. The idea that BCS rejiggers our conception of things isn't founded only on Saul's final testimony, but is backed up by the episodes Breaking Bad of BCS and Better Call Saul of BB. Saul gets to his feet in front of the grave and takes control of the situation. Then his sales pitch at the end of the episode in Walt's classroom caps it. Does he fear Walt? Sure, and Walt kills Mike, takes out Gus via Hector, but Walt is still an egomaniac who failed to see the forest for the trees. Say what you will about Saul, but the man was a visionary who thought big picture. And in the end, Jimmy is the bigger man, because he accepts what he did at least to a degree.

The finale was straight up Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment. Jimmy has been running away from guilt his entire life. As Saul, his life was empty and greedy. Then he ran away again, and as Gene, his life was even more empty and paranoid. He was a prisoner in his own mind. So coming clean and taking the proper punishment, truly saved his soul. Running away again, or lying his way into a 7 years in a comfy jail, would not have saved him. It's so hard for modern audiences to understand and accept. They want to see the protagonist get away with it. Which in this case wasn't in his best interest. He did get away with it already, and we saw how miserable he was as Gene. And yet they wanted him to do that again. Basically, Saul went to jail, but also found redemption. Walt went out on his own terms, in a blaze of glory. Jesse got a fresh start, but the horrors he witnessed, will haunt him forever. What a bittersweet ending to the saga. Amazing to think that this series had 11 amazing seasons, and it went out in style. They captured lighting in a bottle twice. That's beyond epic. And when first watching it, the finale ended with a segment where all the actors and directors sincerely thanked the fans. In an era where we either get fans hating or shows, or the talent behind the shows bashing fans, it was refreshing and moving to see fans absolutely adore and respect the show and in return the talents behind the show gave their most sincere and loving thanks and Farwell. One of the best and most positive messages I have seen on TV.

@transformersrevenge9
@transformersrevenge9 Ай бұрын
@@fipse well Walt had quite a few choices. Just letting the cancer slowly take him, which would have been humiliating from his POV. Get taken into custody, which also didn't suit his tastes, but would have been best for everyone. End his own life, which is something a man like him could not do. Or go out in a firefight against uncle Jack. Had he not gotten hit during the machine gun part, I guess he was hoping that at least Jesse shoots him. Either way, cops found the infamous drug King pin, gunned down like Tony Montana. I know a man of Walt's ego would have loved to see the papers next day about his demise.
@fipse
@fipse Ай бұрын
@@transformersrevenge9 But in the end he had to tell Gretchen and Elliot to claim they are using their own money to help his family. The one thing he never wanted to do. The one thing his ego did not allow him to do. After all this death and pain he caused he went with the solution he could have used in Season 1 Episode 5...and for a man with an ego like Walt, this was a total defeat.
@transformersrevenge9
@transformersrevenge9 Ай бұрын
@@fipse I do agree to a point. This entire series could have been avoided if he took up their early offer. But he just had to go about it his own way. And I am sure that when he gave them the money and scared them to death, he must have thought to himself that ''well at least I got one over them, and it's my money still''. He was desperate at that point, since there was no other way to get it to them. Still it's crazy to think that the entire saga happens because A) Chuck was petty and jealous of Jimmy, B) Because Walt was petty (and well because Eladio and Hector decided to show Gus his place at that meeting). Entire saga built upon people being egotistical and petty.

Don't forget, Bob's first real acting job was as Stevie Grant, slimeball, over the top agent for Larry Sanders on The Larry Sanders Show. His character's backstabbing and chicanery leads to the end of the show, and, while Larry Sanders had managed a Best Supporting Actor Emmy for Rip Torn, they didn't win any major Emmys until their finale, Flip, which won Best Comedy Series, Best Directing, and Best Writing. That underrated show reshaped television by introducing a mockumentary format, dramedy, and gave a lot of starts to careers of many who shaped the comedy and television of the last 25 years. Stevie Grant was based on Ari Gold, and Jeremy Piven's Ari was based on the same guy. Bob got there first, and he may be a bigger slimeball than Saul. Throw in Mr. Show and Bob Odenkirk is a television legend.

I love hearing what you have to say about my two favorite shows because it gives me a lot of insight into things I never noticed when watching. This has been an amazing journey watching these shows with you and I love your channel. There truely is no other show like better call saul and like you said its above and too good to win awards. This show really inspires creativity in me to explore the world through new lenses and you also helped play a part in that. Some other things, they played the same soundtrack in S1 E1 at the last smoking scene, the Hg wells time machine appears multiple times throughout season 6, in the first scene of season 6 when the government is seizing sauls assets, they place the cardboard cutout of him in the trash representing where he was caught in the last episode. In the scene where walter and saul talk about regrets, which take place under the best quality vacuum service before they are dissapeared, walter looks down at his watch before talking about grey matter which references the ten people he killed in prison because the watch was used in the montage where they where being killed. Only better call saul has small callbacks and references like that which I love and there are a million other small things that make the show what it is. Bravo Vince!

I love all of this! I would say the only thing is that the watch is Jesse's 51st birthday gift to Walter. I think looking down at it was Walter subconsciously regretting everything he did to Jesse, but then saying something different as his "biggest regret". The whole time machine concept is about true regrets, like Jimmy's being his relationship with Chuck, though he won't admit it :)

It’s kind of awesome that even though Jimmy is locked up, he’s freer than he ever was spiritually. He’s able to see Kim again, he’s able to finally face up to what happened to Howard, and free from the ghosts of Lalo, Chuck, and Walter White. I also like to think Kim gets back into the law and negotiates something so Jimmy doesn’t die in jail, but even if he does, at least he dies as himself, likely doing what he loves as the jailhouse lawyer.

I love the Walter scene so much. It's almost like a retrospective on Walt 10 years later and from a more objective point of view than BrBa which is definitely a little bias toward Walt. In this scene, we see Walt for the annoying, pedantic nerd with a real talent for taking a small problem and multiplying times a million. We also see that even after Walt has blown up his family and got Hank killed, he is still doesnt have it in him to say that he regrets any of it, and instead focuses on his life-long grudge against Gretchen and Elliot. There's also that super intimate cut to the watch that Jesse gave him when Saul first brings up regrets. Then there are the parallels between Walt and Chuck that others have mentioned. And it does it all while doing a cameo that everyone wanted to see. Absolutely perfect.

The finger guns really got me. That gesture kinda morphed over time to become like their "I'd do literally anything as long as it's with/for you" move. Kim was the last one to do it, to show Jimmy that she was ride or die with regards to the shenanigans they were about to engage in at the time. He wanted her to know that he threw himself under the ultimate bus to make sure she can go on. At the same time, confessing fully to everything else he had done not involving her. They often sacrifice for each other throughout the show. It's kind of like their love language. Anyways, that's what those final finger guns mean to me. In a way this ending reminds me of the end of Cast Away. Two people clearly still in love being pried apart by messy circumstances. Profoundly sad, like taking a wrong turn into an alternate universe that never should have happened, and you can't go back.

I’ve never tuned in week to week to a reactor watching every episode of a show from beginning to end, but this was the one I just HAD to experience with you. I’ve seen this show all the way through 4 times, and seen multiple episodes countless times… seeing how well you just GET this show and these characters has been beautiful. Thank you, James. As always, the film/TV reaction GOAT❤❤

Such a rewarding ending, just payoff after payoff.A brilliant conclusion to the most brilliant part of a brilliant universe. Been a pleasure rewatching with you! The mint choc chip ice cream is such a funny detail. It was the ice cream he was eating that he had to drop on the sidewalk when Nacho picked him up to meet Lalo. He then said to Kim to give him every ice cream except mint choc chip when they were in the hotel together. And at the end he requests it specifically. Given that it's the most divisive flavour of ice cream it's a funny additional piece of symbolism for his leanings towards each side of the world. And yeah, them not winning Emmys for this is insane. Some of the best acting I've seen in any show, if not the best.

I absolutely adore the themes of regret and change in this show. Jimmy and Chuck's relationship really mirrors this in their final ever scene with both brothers holding grudges for things that happened in their past and not moving past them, but at the end of the day they both love each other and wish to know each other better. Jimmy finally disproved Chuck believing that "he'd never change" by spilling the truth in his testimony, it did cause him to lose his sentence but because of that he becomes whole again and Kim once again admires the once "good" man.

Magnificent reactions. This episode was overwhelming for me back when it aired, I didn't quite know what to make of it. It was marvellous, of course, but also hard to digest at that point. Over two years later, I've learnt to appreciate it even more (the same can be said about all of it anyway).

The finale of BCS was most certainly unlike any other, and I would have never guessed it would end the way that it did. But in hindsight, it’s hard to imagine a better way for it to end. The fact that they found a way to make Saul’s confession feel believable is beyond me. Like you, a show doesn’t need to win an award to be of any value, but man did it truly deserve these awards. Its great that we managed to see all lose ties in the Breaking Bad universe be cut and see so many iconic characters and moments before the ending. The final shot with Jimmy and Kim truly made the episode. I’m glad you enjoyed this show and went along on this journey with us. And to answer your question, yes I’d be down to hear you see some bts of breaking bad and Better Call Saul as j feel like there is still so much more to delve into. Overall great reaction and I wish you a merry Christmas.

It's an amazing show. One of the best things I ever saw my whole life. What a complete and full world with all three entries. I almost say that BCS is better than Breaking Bad, but it's not correct to compare, I think. BCS is my personal favorite however, and it's largely in part to how PATIENT the storytelling is in all of the final season. That last episode hits so hard. All the stuff with the Time Machine is just also so deliberately paced. Even when we come back to the setting of Breaking Bad in black and white and it's all so slow. We just see Mike's old post, all these familiar locations, and they're all just dead in time. It feels like a ghost town. But it also shows that these places are just places. They had interesting characters that inhabited them but they all made their own choices and after reaping what they sowed are no longer able to be anywhere. I'm glad that Jimmy got his redemption and can now live with himself. No other show has ever made me feel this way. I love Bob Odenkirk for what he was able to do with the character of Jimmy.
