There's a connection between this film and Tod Browning's "Freaks", transposing the circus into a post apocalymptic building, even the role of the former circus artist (Dominique Pinon) is reminiscent of the clown role in "Freaks". Same thing when she gets slapped: the director instructed the actor to smack her hard with no warning. The tears you see in her eyes are genuine. Since you don't mind subtitles you HAVE to watch ''Tatie Danielle'' (Auntie Danielle), it's dark humour at its best. You'll never forget that aunt. No one does. Delicatessen is essentially a German word, which is based on a French word, which then went back to France. The French 'delicat' (see the English delight) means tasteful or well tasting, and the German word Delicatessen (today mostly spelled Delikatessen) means assortment of well tasting and speciality foods, which you can get in an Delicatessengeschäft (Delicatessen shop). When the word came back into French, the -geschäft part was dropped, and now Delicatessen means a shop for speciality foods.

This is one of my favorite movies. Ever. I saw it when it was first released in the USA, way back in the 20th century. It's an experience, and yeah, the whole idea of a loonie apocalypse is so incredibly French...I love the whole idea of an apocalypse with a musical saw, hilarious suicides that don't work, and paying for stuff with lentils...and yeah, you can really play a saw with a violin bow, but it's not really easy to do; it has to be a really flexible saw and not one of those heavy-duty ones. I came across your reaction to this by accident and it brought the whole movie back to me. Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Luc Besson are two of my all-time favorite directors/producers *ever!* And then there's the now-retired Czech filmmaker, Jan Švankmajer (pronounced Yahn Shvank-meyer.) If you like surreal films, Švankmajer is a brilliant filmmaker to explore, if you haven't already. I have to go back and check out your other videos, and I'm looking forward to that. I like your take on creativity.

As other said, the City of Lost Children made by the same director is more of the same, with a bit more control and experience. But if you like French movies, I would also advise "Amelie" (again by the same director): more grounded than Delicatessen but with the same underlying charm and creativity in camera ops and cinematography which gave the movie such a fantastic, faery like quality and a ton of charm. And the score is out of this world good. In another genre but still with great cinematography and composition, a more international older French movie: "The Big Blue" by Besson. Both are absolute masterpieces. But damn I remember seeing Delicatessen in theaters when it got out, such an experience. And Jean-Claude Dreyfus (the butcher) is great in it, with such a great face, for a role totally counter to what he usually played before.

I love this movie, and this director (Jean-Pierre Jeunet). Another couple of films he did in French were Amelie and Micmacs. I adore these 2 films. They are both charming and uplifting. He directed and wrote all three of these films. And Dominique Pinon, the actor who played Louison in Delicatessen, is in Micmacs and Amelie and he is delightfully eccentric just as he is in Delicatessen. In fact he is in most of Jeunet's films. Jeunet also wrote and directed The City of Lost Children, a trippy sci-fi fantasy film starring Ron Perlman. It's another great film that also has Pinon in it. He also was in the Jeunet-directed Alien Resurrection with Perlman, and thet were my 2 favorite characters. Jeunet didn't write Alien Resurrection though. The producers probably should have let him write it since the movies he writes are amazing, while Alien 4's story was only okay, but it was still a better sequel than Alien 3, I believe largely due to Jeunet's vision. The visuals definitely felt like a Jeunet film, which I appreciated. The color grade was very similar to Delicatessen. Check out Jeunet's other films if you can. He really is a masterful storyteller and insightful director with a keen sense of his own visual signature.

The world needs this kind of French cinema right now, surreal imagination and creativity focused on human relationships. Hollywood has become an almost sterile, purely politically motivated corporate entity.

Finally some US gentleman appreciating European cinematography. Great reaction, sir. If you are into this kind of movies you should definitely check out this pieces: - City of Lost Children made by almost the same team as Delicatessen. This movie is based on book and also old RPG video game exists. Suprisingly Ron Perlman is starring in this French film. - Taxidermia (2006) It's really hard to describe this one. - King Size (1987) and Sex Mission (1983) are two Polish movies made by Juliusz Machulski and his team. Both movies are crazy but very serious in their message which is allegory of communist totalitarian regime. - Smoke (1990) Excellent movie from Czechoslovakia, also about totalitarian communist regime. Hilarious with more hilarious songs. - The Triplets of Belleville (2003) 2D animated movie with incredible atmosphere and great scetches.

I love your commentaries. I'd like to suggest Big Night (1996) with Stanley Tucci. I think you'd really appreciate the style of it.

It's been said by others already, but cannot stress enough how great this director's filmography is -- Amelie, City of Lost Children, A Very Long Engagement, and even Alien Resurrection (although most Alien franchise purists hate everything after Aliens). I won't blame you for skipping the last one but City of Lost Children is absolutely worth a watch; same with A Very Long Engagement if you like that one. And agreed with how great that lead actor's face is; it's like hilariously rubbery and expressive. Jeunet (the director) uses him in all the other movies listed above. One last thing: deli (as in deli meats, or the NYC institution Katz's Deli) is short for delicatessen. I'm surprised you weren't familiar with that word but maybe most people have forgotten what the full word is!

More glorious French films I would highly recommend are - La Gloire de mon père and the sequel Le Château de ma mère - Jean de Florette / Manon des Sources (2 films but have to be watched back to back as it really is one single story) - The Hairdresser's Husband Chateau de ma mere is one of only 3 films I've ever seen where the audience stood up and clapped as the credits rolled.

I loved their 1st movie. When I saw it I was stunned. And I like the darkness of the theme compare to Amelie. It's my favorite movie from Caro Jeunet

@@JamesVSCinema splendid!! Fairly groundbreaking and done on a shoestring budget back in the day. Top work my guy, always fine choices from you and your patreon massive!! If you wanna hop the channel from France/Belgium back to England, may I further suggest, ‘Withnail and I”. and ‘Sexy Beast” Two very different films, but both all about script/dialogue and phenomenal performances.

If you want to try French films, there is a very long list of interesting ones, but one that is simple enough to get into is the Samurai, by Jean-Pierre Melville, a very good noir movie with an awesome soundtrack. But if you want something lighter, I'd also recommend the first two OSS 117 movies by Michel Hazanavicius (I haven't seen the third and can't vouch for it), a parody of old James Bond movies. The interesting part of the take is the way the 60's casual sexism/racism/bigotry is made fun of, and the cinematography, which emulates perfectly movies of the era. Anyway, have fun reacting to whatever you want, and a good day to you!

Also The Artist by Hazanavicius, a great love letter to the end of the silent era, shot and released in 2011.
