What hurts is watching episode 1 again seeing Carmy start to open the tomato sauce for the spaghetti then throw it out. In the moment I'm like, Hell yeah, stick to your guns, don't make that spaghetti shit. On rewatch I'm going, Nooooo there's cash in there!

Nah it was a big can. Mikey only kept the cash in the small cans. Carmy even subtly draws attention to how weird it was that Mikey had so many small cans despite the cost to ingredient ration being better with the big ones.

It works perfectly for the story, but on rewatch- (my 4th) You can't help but wonder just how much of this brilliant series has been fleshed out. I get why a lot of people found it odd that this show won for comedy. I'm getting Breaking Bad vibes. If I had to think of a word to accurately describe this show, I can only think of Tina's actress responding to Carmy's meal with brilliantly loaded silence. It's so beautifully one-of-a-kind. (I've seen S2, but no meal spoiling, not even the garnish. 🙏)

Per the sappy ending...This show earned it. This show is so honest about grief and pain. Things go bad and they stay bad. Even when it gets better, there's another bad on the other side of the hill. And so, when these characters get a happy ending this season, the relief is magnificent. The lie of depression and despair is that if it's bad and it keeps staying bad, then it will always be bad. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy. And it isn't true. You can't know what will happen next in life. Good things do happen. These characters start in such an awful place, and we begin to see in this season, even more so in the next, how there is always a way out. For a show that's so honest about despair and dysfunction, it absolutely earns this sentimental hug. Also shows the utter brilliance of the writers to know when to be ugly and honest, and when to bring relief. This episode following "Review", and knowing to put "Forks" after "Fishes" in the next season. Masters of emotional pacing.

Mikey must’ve been feeling like everything was closing in on him, his addiction and masked depression hidden behind a cheerful facade. But at the same time he was doing everything he could think of to set up Carmy for success. Mikey knew Carm was out there getting better and better, and he wanted to keep him away from his downward spiral. So he didn’t pay his vendors, he stole from his uncle, he hid it all so debt collectors couldn’t touch it. And he trusted Carmy with everything. That’s a lot of love, but it’s almost a kind of selfish, desperate love, Carmy just wanted to be let in, but Mikey in his depression didn’t trust himself with that. It’s so, so fucking sad.
@dahliaherrod430110 ай бұрын
Yeah the thought process is so twisted. You can tell the man was clearly not well. It's heartbreaking really because you just know Carmy would trade all that money for his brother.

One of the many things I love about this show is how true it is about the waves of grief and transition. The convo between Carmy and Tina shows how much The Beef staff was in survival mode during Mikey's last years out of love. When you've been surviving for so long, the transition to stability can be challenging

I'm not sure how many shows could end with that much anticipation on a "Were closed for reconstruction" sign. You know that part when Carmy smiles at Michael and gets that wink at the very end,alot might say that isn't real or that doesn't happen. I tend to disagree. How many times after a funeral or just being in a reminiscing conversation have your heard someone say to a close loved one, what you smiling about or what's so funny? That is that exact scene in someone's head. Not a stretch at all.
