Nice video, and to answer your final question; Nolan actually explained this. He said that Hardy can act really well using only his eyes. So he needed a pilot from which you can read his expression so he immediately thought of Tom Hardy

Wow. Makes you want to go to IMAX. Also you make me want a medium format camera like the Fuji GFX. And of course I must see Dunkirk now. Motivating you are. I will watch movies, life, with different eyes

You do a wonderful job of deconstructing what is happening on a technical level. I used to despise the square aspect ratio until I was watching a video on Grand Budapest Hotel. The cinematographer mentioned that instead of planning for wide, he had to plan for height, and then discussed the way they used height in the film. Since then, I don't mind.

Fantastic video! Well I was lucky enough to watch about half a dozen movies (all 50 minute short features at the time) in true IMAX in 2001 and 2002 (both 2D and 3D) on a huge screen the size of a football (soccer) field in my old home town Frankfurt before they switched to digital. It was all still photochemical (at least I think it was) since I spotted the typical imperfections like grain clumps, a VERY slight unevenness, flicker or lab marks on some prints (which very likely occured in the later release print stages - and I actually love these as long as they are not too distracting: they weren't at all, just tiny hints, making it all feel more organic and alive). The 70mm 15-perf horizontal prints basically looked like a (good) 35mm spherical print if you just concentrated on one small area, but of course surrounded by a huge area of the exact same film stock. Yes: you are losing the reference of where you actually are and the movie becomes your reality. The horizon (if in picture) on film even overrides your sense of orientation, which relies also on information from the inner ear. It's amazing when you find that out: our brain prioritizes the visual input: amazing! You can think I am making this up, but no: the experience is so immersive that your other senses (smell for example) seem to be triggered in a way, depending on the content. Absolutely amazing is when you have deep focus wide angle shots and you follow your peripheral vision: you can see the smallest details in the background (that's why real IMAX films are so re-watchable). Fantastic analysis of the shots and compositions as usual! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and expertise. Will check your articles ASAP!

Curious thing about the music: Its inspired on a Enigma Variation (NIMROD) by Elgar but stretched so much that almost becomes unidentifiable. It is supposed to signify HOME! When he says home... its such an emotional moment for a classical musician!!!!

stunning Sareesh. I saw Dunkirk twice - both in IMAX in Melbourne and again in London (both still use their original projectors I'm pretty sure: i'm actually fairly certain Melbourne is one of the few in the world that bought back its projector after they sold it). I now have it on blu-ray and its still just as enthralling, but I do agree that its not as immersive. nothing can match the cinematic experience, especially when the audience feeds itself its an energy obtained from the film. thanks for another perfect video my friend!

Thanks for sharing. Learnt a lot. I think the director and DP used the latest tech to tell story in an new way as Mr. Nolan always tried to achieve. And it was so impressive that I felt scared when i was watching it in cinema as the cinematography and sound were so 'real'. it is an new definition of HD tech in film/storytelling. P.S. I watched DCP 4K with Dolby Atmos.

The projection resolution of Laser IMAX is 4K. And many digital IMAX screens are 1.9:1 and many of them are only 2K. IMAX with Laser projection is the only other way to see an IMAX film in 1.43:1. But I’m not sure if your infos in resolution adds up. For that topic, Star Wars VIII DP Steve Yedlin did a resolution demo on his site YedlinDOTnet. Where he compares all relevant shooting formats and how resolution isn’t resolved with pixels. I highly encourage you to watch both parts of it since it will give a lot of inside into the different formats and the way images are resolved. For the record I flew from Germany to London to see Dunkirk in 70/15 IMAX.

I saw the movie in 2K DCP (there aren't a lot of IMAX cinemas in germany, I think there were 4 cinemas in all of germany showing Dunkirk in IMAX) and I really liked the aspect ratios. I think it's more dramatic, but it does make it a slightly different movie.

I was fortunate enough to have seen Dunkirk in 70MM film and, yes, the word "immersive" best describes the experience. It's not about "hyper-realism" as some have mistakenly looked at it. It's, thankfully, not Peter Jackson doing 120 frames per second. No. It's cinematic. Anyway, thanks for providing me with several more reasons to understand why I enjoyed and was moved by the film. Always a brilliant analysis!
