I think it's a great album. The movie is sort of an acquired taste. Unless, like me, you're a true believer. In rock and roll, not necessarily the Beatles. Lol I mean John was a dick as far as I can tell. Ringo's cool. Paul's cool, though perhaps his arrogance might be a little hindrance to actually liking him. George was George. Drugs fucked them up as much as anything. I mean after the drug years of Sgt. Peppers?? That assertion that George's last LSD trip was the time he visited Haight-Ashbury just somehow doesn't ring true at all. I think he did it a lot more later in the game. Take a look at him during the last few years of the Beatles. I mean shit that scene in Magical Mystery Tour with he and John in a theater watching a band while high as fuck. Or not? But I think they're lit up like a couple of firefly's.

I m in my late 60s and i followed the beatles since they started. They were criticised on their every move by the press .The magical Miystery tour film was shown on boxing day in black and white we all had small black and white valve small screen t v s It got criticised heavily. I found a copy on blue ray and i watch it occasionally on my 59 inch Panasonic screen. All i can say is it is definitely a work of a 1960s masterpiece. The Beatles always beat their critics .Peace and love from Rob❤

Agreed. Music and movie critics have long since developed deservedly poor reputations. So many absolute masterworks have been released and gone _right_ over their head. Which is even funnier considering that typically their position on them - whether stated explicitly or merely implied - is that the works were beneath their "keenly refined" tastes (🙄👌🏻). While often at the same time giving high marks to forgettable cannon fodder. I particularly enjoy when publications and critics like Rolling Stone for instance, come back many years later to _re-review_ records they had initially panned upon their release.

I'm now 61, and I have no idea what you're talking about. The Beatles were the media darlings! They could do NO wrong! That is, until MMT movie, and the so-called, "White Album", and for good reasons. Don't get me wrong, as the MM T album itself was great, but the movie was awful.

I notice that a lot of people are saying that this was one great album but some replies aren’t so kind. I felt that though it didn’t sound like other classics of the Beatles library, it was hard not to groove with most of the songs on this album. The Beatles were a great group and greater than the some of there parts, but they were still just human beings mixed with a bit of genius. What a terrible burden they must have carried. I did in my youth find a bit of comfort in their musical expressions and it was rather thrilling to have them provide a score for the sixties and for me to grow-up with. Thank you Beatles! 😊

Given what you wrote, something you might check out (if you haven't already) is on the Beatles Anthology 2 (disc 2), a version of I Am The Walrus _before_ George Martin added all the strings, horns and choral singing/effects, it's really interesting and a major example of Martin's genius and why he was legitimately called "the 5th Beatle". And Lennon says “gee, I better write something.” Then he cranks out a mega hit like “All You Need Is Love.” Unbelievable really. All in a day’s work for The Beatles. Also, “I Am the Walrus” is now recognized as a work of original genius. Nothing like it before or since. They didn’t even need to tour to keep being the biggest band in the world.

This has been my favorite Beatles album since I was a kid. I acknowledge that Abbey Road is objectively better, but Magical Mystery Tour just works for me on so many levels. Top to bottom, every song is just such a vibe. The movie isn't great and seems like a misguided side quest that emerged as a coping mechanism on Paul's journey through the grieving process. It probably just created more stress than providing a constructive distraction. Regardless, I love I Am The Walrus so very much. Blue Jay Way is so creepy. Hello, Goodbye is infectious in all the right ways. Strawberry Fields Forever is such a masterpiece, the only thing that could follow it without falling on its face is the absolute brilliance of Penny Lane. It's just so damn good. I love all of it.
