Funny, that shot from Blade Runner in the thumbnail was done in camera with lighting and filters. Sure there was some enhancement in the grade but the Orginal image in camera was actually so orange that they found some sort of artefact in the dark shadows and called Arri how also didn't know about this. This was a case where Deakins actually pushed the Alexa to places its never been before. Also for anybody interested in what color grading was like before computers, look up: Color Timing with Printer Lights. It's a really simple and intuitive process and there's a printer point feature in DaVinci Resolve that you can also control thro the touch bar on MacBooks. It's crazy to me how many different looks can be created from such a simple tool. Nolan, PTA, and Tarantino all exclusively color time with printer lights, the first two actually photochemically and not in a digital intermediate.

Great video! Another use of LUTs in post-production is having a preview of the final look of a shot while working in the VFX stage. Compositing software like Nuke have a built-in quick preview using an imported LUT, so the artist can see how the shot will look in the final edit, without changing the original scan.

Our eyes see so much luminance and color. Our cameras are ever closer to matching the amount of stops they can see (although they'll never match the ICE perfectly). And the color spaces are also ever evolving to involve more color which means we are held back by our monitors, TVs, and projectors to stay in Rec 709 standard. What can we use to determine that the majority of screens people see offers more color space so that we may use more hdr and a wider space than 709 like Rec 2020 and 2100
