Johnny Depp was so hot and treated like a poster boy at the time, so many people wrongly presumed the show was dumb. Plus the fact that JD was so critical of the show didn't help either. But it was a terrific show and we didnt have anything similar at the time. Teen shows were never as real and dark and funny and original all at once. 35 years later it's still worth a watch. Some episodes stayed with me all these years coz they were so thought-provoking. One about the death penalty/row comes to mind.
