I would rather have forensic science than any witnesses whatsoever since they can’t identify wrong suspects. On May 22, 2007, Alexander pleaded guilty to one count of battery for having beaten a former girlfriend with a lead pipe in 2005. As part of his plea bargain, a second count of battery was dismissed.[ On September 17, 2020, he was charged in the stabbing death of his ex-girlfriend following a pattern of domestic violence.[9] Midway through his trial Alexander took a plea deal for a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter.

I fully believe that if someone gets arrested for YOUR crime & you do not step forward to stop it, when they do (HOPEFULLY) figure out that that other person is, indeed, innocent that the actual perpetrator should also get charged with false imprisonment & the amount of time the innocent person stayed locked up should be tacked onto the actual perpetrator’s sentence to be served consecutively with all other charges.

People make mistakes when they are under extreme stressful circumstances, and these woman made a huge mistake identifying Richard as the rapist being in that particular stressful situation. The black juror and the niece complained about “another black man” going to prison. What did they expect? The perpetrator was a black man. Or perpetrators, in this case. It does no good to make excuses for criminal behavior and for the criminals themselves because they’re black. That said, the second jury absolutely should have included black people - a jury of his peers. Clearly, they got it wrong and a man suffered mightily for their mistake.

The black community loves its felons. The two females voiced their irrational excuses for a violent black predator. The race is a moral failure, with seventy-five percent now born to unwed females. It was not always like that until after the 1960's and the Welfare State broke up black families.

I know this is an unpopular thing to say, but the one holdout juror hung the first jury for the wrong reasons. You can't convict based on your personal judgment of the person- you have to assess the evidence, right? And when they interviewed her later, she said "another black man going to prison." And although she is 100% correct, and I totally get it.... I just don't think you should acquit someone for those reasons. Based on not wanting another black man going to prison and/or not "getting a feeling" that he was guilty. And I'm a person of color- not that it's relevant, but just worth mentioning.

@@traceeteeter9875 right- so I think we are agreeing- based on the evidence, he’s guilty. My only comment was just to reflect on why that one Juror they interviewed hung the jury. First she said he didn’t look guilty. And when she found out they retried him and convicted him, she was upset, saying ‘another Black man going to prison,’ which is her personal belief about macro level racism in our country (which is totally present- I’m not denying that). But still… I was critical of her for hanging the jury because she had a feeling he was innocent and/or didn’t want to see another Black man in prison.

Sadly there are some states prosecutors today still use eyewitnesses testimonies as 100% proof of defendant's guilt, since then technology had advanced a lot in the last 20 years. Today, most prosecutors rely on science instead of eyewitnesses or if someone has an actual video of someone breaking a law. Even the US Supreme Court agreed that eyewitness is not 100% reliable. In this episode the police had doubts that Mr. Alexader had committed any of the crimes, but an over zealous prosecutor had ignored that science said the samples did not match Mr. Alexander, but relied on eyewitnesses testimonies instead.

Funny how a black juror ignores the trial and bases a "not guilty" verdict based on a "hunch" on how he looked and acted in court. That is just as bad as someone voting "guilty" based on skin color (which they were trying to push in this video). Relying on Jurors to decide a person's fate is far from perfect or even fair.

On June 4, 2002, Richard Alexander filed a federal suit against the city of South Bend, its police department and 14 of its officers, including Sgt. Cindy Eastman, an officer instrumental in securing Alexander's release. His lawyer, Roseann P. Ivanovich, said she expected to ask for about $55 million in damages ($10 million for every year spent in prison). The civil rights lawsuit was eventually dismissed by the United States district court, a decision which Alexander appealed. But on January 3, 2006, the Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit upheld the district court's dismissal of Alexander's lawsuit. The court stated that Alexander had not proven his rights were violated during the trial which yielded his wrongful conviction.

South Bend man has been sentenced to 50 years in prison after pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter in connection to a deadly stabbing. 55-year-old Richard Lee Alexander was charged with killing 37-year-old Catherine Minix. Police were doing a welfare check in the 900 block of Fairview Avenue in South Bend when they discovered her body outside. Alexander was sentenced to a total of 50 years-30 for voluntary manslaughter and 20 for the habitual offender enhancement. Alexander was initially sent to prison after a series of rapes in the River Park area in the mid 90′s, but was later exonerated through DNA evidence.

May have been innocent in this case but in 2005 he beat his ex-girlfriend with a metal pipe and was sentenced to 8 years in jail. Then in 2020 he took a plea deal of manslaughter for killing his ex-girlfriend. He had a history of domestic violence. Some people might say his time in prison psychologically affected him but it takes a special kind of person to take a life. If the is was try the case society would never send anyone to jail. He was a bad apple from the start imo. If he was never found to be innocent in the first case, at least a couple of women wouldn’t have had to experience his abuse and one woman would not have been killed. I’m not saying it would have been right for him to be locked up as an innocent man of the rape case, just pointing out the events that subsequently occurred after his release.
