I can't tell you how deeply in love with this movie I was as a teen. I guess I still am because I tend to watch it every year. After watching this I started dressing like Clarence and I switched my cigarette brand to Chesterfields for about 6 months. Tied with Boogie Nights for favorite movie. As it was briefly touched upon, Arrow launched the special edition of this 4k blu ray initially, and did subsequently bring out a standard edition version of this in the UK, so I imagine that they will repeat this for the US

I'm surprised that all those bonus features fit on the same 4K disc as the movie. You don't see that too often. Does is say something about the compressed file of the movie? In my opinion: I liked a few shots of the blu ray with the cooler tone more than the warmer colors

Tip: This morning 12/11/22 Amazon had a flash sale of this disc for $20 (the Arrow single 4k disk version). I saw this and immediately placed the title in my Amazon cart, then began researching Amazon titles to add one more to the order. I had to do this because I don't have Prime and order must be at least $25.01+ for free shipping. An hour later I had made my final decision on second title, went to checkout and the the flash sale was over and disc was back at $28; I think sale lasted about 8 hours. I felt confident that once I placed the sale disc in my cart that Amazon would honor that price if the sale happened to end before final click of purchase button. Moral: If you're lucky to catch one of these brief flash sales, grab the title immediately.

Went with the steelbook deluxe set which is the same contents but a steelbook in the box that has different new artwork. Same for wild things. Wish dune would have been like that. All had the same artwork for that release.

They were probably just DVD transfers upscaled to 2K and used on Blu-ray. Ironically the DVD was an upscale of a laserdisc transfer so no wonder the Blu-ray was shit.

A helpful way to compare the 1080p vs. 2160p images would be to see the full number of available pixels within the given image space. For your 4k reviews that you've uploaded in native 4k over the last year or so, this is already occurring for those of us who are watching the reviews on 4k displays. For the remainder, an approximately 2x zoom-in to the 4k image prior to taking the screen capture would be most helpful, thanks.

I don't like the new colors, too many reds and not enough brightness, the image looks muted and dim. The original looks more natural and 90s-esque. Modern film editors do not understand what makes a good image, they think oversaturating and adding some contrast makes the image pop. All it does is change the original atmosphere for the worse. Do NOT fix what ain't broke. Unfortunately like many other remasters, it follows the trend of modern Hollywood color grading. Luckily it is not the worst of its kind. As for the image quality and sound, of course these are improved. I just wish they kept the original colors and contrast values intact.

100% agree! I can't stand when they remove the film grain on 4K. Evil Dead and Full Metal Jacket are 2 great examples that keep the film grain and it's great to hear this does too

Excessive film grain was Tony Scott's trademark! Sometimes he went overboard IMO, but it's a valid creative choice and ultimately its appeal or lack thereof is a subjective experience. For me, occasionally it was more distracting than enhancing. The issue of "original audio" is an interesting subject. I'm old, so I went to the cinema as early as the late '50s (w/ my folks as a very young child). For the most part, however, my memories of my filmgoing experience don't really begin until the early '60s. What I've come to realize is that many films were shot in the '50s onward in 4-track stereo (Cinemascope, etc.), BUT were often presented in the cinemas in MONO because the auditoriums were not equipped with multi-channel audio systems. I would assume that cost was a factor. To make it clear, I'm speaking only from my own personal experience, but it was a big event if a particular movie was actually shown in multi-track audio, and it didn't become the norm for most venues in my area until the late '70s onward.

I always watch theatrical first. Enjoy it as it was enjoyed by others originally. Then dive into new cuts if you like it.

The Theatrical Cut is skippable, imho. The only differences are that there's less language and a little less violence, and they make one small little change at the end (it's not a big thing but its still technically a spoiler so I'll not mention it).

@@FastEddie86 DCs of both aren’t as much “director’s cuts” like T2 and Star Wars, with extensions and changed galore, but are really just extended versions of certain scenes and of course more language and violence. NBK had a notable extension involving Tommy Lee Jones, I won’t spoil it here, but there’s one shot that made the DC (and the DC packaging) that wasn’t in the TC of the movie. In those regards the director’s cuts are good.

@LFiers So i pulled it out to verify and skimmed the video to remind me. The one i bought on amazon had all the included items, but it's in a steelbook with different art. Looks like amazon has them for 36USD now. I like it for that price, but have seen higher that i wouldn't pay. Depends on how much you like extras, at the time i bought- the set i got wasn't much more than the standard option.

The DVD was just the laserdisc transfer dropped onto a flipper in 1997. In motion the 4K transfer is awesome. The older Blu-rays from WB are ass.

i got the uk release and the transfer rocks, i think… the 5.1 mix is not for me… it‘s an old upmix from way back… i found the stereo mix to be the better choice… sounds also great once you blow it up to atmos with the surround upmixer 👍

The stereo is definitely the way to go. I have been watching/listening on the old flipper disc from WB for a while now, and even there the stereo track is amazing. It’s still 100 times better on the Arrow disc though.

@@LFiers it‘s not an original mix… when released in 93 it was mixed in stereo… so in order to be 5.1 it had to be upmixed… in this case the upmix was done very early back in dvd/blu-ray times and done not very good… there can be very good upmixes but this isn‘t one of them… so when you use the stereo on the arrow release and upmix it yourself to dolby atmos or dts neural x… in this case you get the better upmix… because the technology of those upmixers in your amp is more advanced and it is getting better results than the upmix we have on the blu-ray/4k… as an example: the dialogue on the 5.1 is very loose and spreading to the left and right channels in a very bad way… with the upmixer of the amp the separation sounds a lot cleaner of course it‘s also a matter of taste…

Miramax title, so most likely owned by Paramount, so I’d suggest email them. Of the three major studios I’ve contacted, they’ve been the most decent to me. One of their big people even went on the record to say they’re still trying to do Goodbar, so I’d say Paramount has their assets in mind. Worst they can do is say no. However, if the Weinscums themselves own Four Rooms, like they do with Dogma, it will be much harder to get onto 4K.

True Romance is a classic. Will be getting Arrows blu ray release for sure. This might be an unpopular opinion, but I think arrow takes a little too much liberty when messing with the colors and “flush ness” of films as far as HDR and Dolby vision editing go. I can’t be the only one who has noticed this on multiple of their 4K releases. However... I really do think they blow it outta the park with their 4K scans on regular blu ray releases. Oh yea, that reminds me, WTF is up with arrow being the only distributor I can think of who doesn’t include both the 4K and blu ray in the same product??? Ok, rant done

I do think the color timing of their releases can differ greatly from the original color timing on some occasions. I also think a standard Blu-ray needs to be included with 4K discs, because when the 4K disc inevitably stops working (as all mine have), the Blu-ray is a good fallback while you get a replacement of the 4K disc.

@@LFiers Never really liked Tony Scott's specific style; kinetic to the point of near-incoherence, but then again, he didn't usually direct the best scripts (LAST BOY SCOUT is fun but the script is shit). Plus, Clarence is an Elvis man and I'm a Beatles man. And I see myself as an archivist/librarian, not a "collector" which is why I don't buy overpriced novelty sets and bad steelbooks. So while I collect the stuff I like, I also believe my collection/library should be robust and diversified. I feel it's my obligation as a film geek to respect the art form as a whole, especially art that wasn't acknowledged in its time.

It's more than twice the price of the standard set and all the bonus features exactly the same. You're paying much more money just for a few cards and the booklet and poster. In that case wouldn't it just be worth getting the standard edition? I'm a huge fan of the movie and even I am deciding if it is worth it to buy this version order standard 4K version. Is it really worth getting this edition been twice the price in your opinion?

@@LFiers By "overpriced novelty editions" I mean like those insane $200+ sets like the ALIEN films in a statuette of the Xenomorph head or the PHANTASM films in a boxed set shaped like the Sphere. Stuff that's designed to look showy on your shelf but are impractical and unnecessary. You see a lot of KZbinrs with gigantic basement collections full of these things and they're just a waste of money if you ask me. This edition is a slipcase that fits on a shelf with other stuff just fine. I went with the steelbook because I liked the artwork better than the standard edition. That's it. Plus, I got it on sale, I believe, so it wasn't full price. And cards and booklets and posters are important because you often can't get reprints of posters in full-size, not to mention not having wall space for them all. The cards and posters can stay in the case just fine.
