It's more about revealing their godly forms directly to humans. Humans' faith and belief is dependent on them not KNOWING FOR SURE that the gods are real. Once you've seen a god, you lose your faith because it's now certainty and knowledge, not faith. And faith and belief is what feeds their divine power. Also because Zeus forbade helping them directly, not causing cataclysms like tsunamis. Even Zeus can't stop Poseidon from doing what he wants in his own domain.

Well they did a good job sexing up the Olympians to current Hollywood standards, though I could have done without some of the headdresses. While in the Greek world Ares was never given the prestige that the later Romans lavished upon Mars in an idealized form I think they could have at least butched him up a little better in this movie. He looked like some effeminate pantywaist. Aside from the head gear Poseidon was pretty smokin hot...especially without their traditional big ass beards. Never was a fan of much facial hair.
