watching clips from Jurassic Park and World back to back makes me realize how oversaturated and aggressively color corrected today's movies like Jurassic World are. JW almost doesn't look like a 'movie', there's something about the softer film grade of the original JP that's just more inherently appealing to the eye.

I think Jurassic World may be the worst case of color grading I’ve ever seen in a major blockbuster, to be honest. I remember watching in the theater back then and thinking “it can’t be SUPPOSED to look like this”.

@@anisioc.3426 It's because of the CGI. Color correction can work if applied properly e.g. used on tangible props. For whatever reason, these directors can't understand that animatronics are the ONLY way to go; all of these CG dinos look beyond fake. Go back to the simpler time: film and robots. @@hanburgundy4317 Practical effects look better in terms of color, lighting, texture, etc. but it tends to look unsettlingly fake when it comes to movement (which is usually a plus when it comes to horror). A combination works best: the original JP used animatronics for relatively still shots, but CG when the dinosaurs were required to DO something.

And because the first Film had children from divorced parents, too. So they put this element in JW but it went nowhere. I didn't touched me emotionally and the scenes with the mother calling while being at the attorney's office did nothing to me, nor to the story. It was B-Plot that could be handled with throwaway lines.

There's something you missed about Dr Wu. The first time you see the character, what is he doing? Erasing something on paper. If you're at all familiar with laboratory etiquette and scientific morality, you'd know that is a big no-no. This establishes him being an untrustworthy and morally ambiguous scientific mind.

@HiddenThicket
@HiddenThicket 3 жыл бұрын
@@OGrupxe The original comment is from almost a year ago, but TL;DR: to erase something implies you are hiding something. Unethical record keepers will seek to normalize their data by erasing anomalous results. This makes it appear that the record keeper has an agenda. It appears the record keeper is being dishonest and trying to make the data fit their hypothesis, rather than testing the hypothesis properly and accepting the data as they come. The agenda doesn't matter. It only matters that it appears they have one. And they often do. The ethical and honest thing to do is to mark a line through a correction, then add the new data to the record with a footnote or some other way to indicate the location of what is being corrected, the reason for the correction (new data, obsolete reference, bad art skills, misunderstood data), and any other relevant information. Even misspelled words should never be erased. Mark through and correct. You are supposed to write with a pen or some other method that makes it impossible to alter your marks without it being obvious. Your records may be used by someone else, and them knowing that a set of data was unproductive allows them to re-test, replicate, or disregard the method that caused those data to become unproductive. Not only is it ethical to show your mistakes, it is important to know why you made them, and even more important to show other people what they were, why you made them, and how to avoid making them, too. It's a huge time-saver and a lot of the reason science can progress at all without constantly having to test every variable each time. We understand that water does not boil in all conditions and temperatures, but there was a series of steps that had to be taken along the way to find out all those conditions and temperatures at which it does. Now we can use those records to jump straight to the ideal conditions we need for a given test. Once you are writing your final paper, you can correct things within the paper as needed because all the research has been done and you are just writing your conclusions based on the data within the record. Once the paper is finalized, in order to change anything you have to make reference to corrections and why and... you get the idea, I hope. honestly data collection is not for everyone.

Yep! Mine too, I think as a whole the movie had some great themes to explore, the morality of training creatures that *might be untrainable and possibly using them as a weapon. The idea that man needs to make things that they don't truly understand and end up making something that can be worse for them in the long run. They set it up pretty okay but then end up making you want to hate the creature that didn't even have a chance where they should have really emphasized the idea man meddling with things for it's own gain and profit by making and again failing at it.

imagine how impactful a scene or two of Indominous alone, plodding through the jungle at night, with no purpose, over Owens short monologue of how she was created and raised so terribly. Maybe add in some sympathetic music for effect. Would have changed our feelings over her and the people at hand DRAMATICALLY. Unfortunately so many remakes and sequels focus on repackaging the original for nostalgia's sake, filling it with cheeky call backs that it completely forgets to be its own film/story.

It should be noted that the T-rex in Jurassic Park is never shown to explicitly hunt and consume people like the Raptors do. When Ferrero is killed on the toilet, the T-rex gives an inquisitive tilt of the head and picks him up, shaking him and obviously killing him, but it's never shown to actually eat anyone on camera. It was intentionally filmed to behave more like a curious dog than a cold-blooded killer, while the Raptors pack acts as the main antagonist of the 3rd act of the film. Now in Jurassic World, the T-rex stand-in is shown to be a calculated killer, so they send the Raptors after it? To act as our pseudo protagonists for like 20 minutes before they start hunting people as well? The Raptors have always been a hostile presence in a some way, so it just confuses the tone and makes everything a bizarre mishmash of poorly planned ideas.

As much as I like thr jurassic park franchise, the sequeals have legitimately good concepts, ideas and overall themes. One of the biggest problems I see is the constant switching and deletion of scenes within the franchise. Like you always see people asking "oh why did it do this, what happened to that, etc" that's more of a directive desicion then a narrative one. So that criticism is usually off for me. I honeslty just want these movies to have their own identity, regardless if they are good or not. The lost world was a really good film, exploring the concept and themes of nature. The dark, gritty aspect of it. Family, and how family can get divided, and be felt vulnerable. How bad descions can have a butterfly effect of consequences etc. Granted their are some goofy moments and cut scenes. But its a good sequel overall. It told its own story, but it constantly felt like it was holding its own potential.

i think jurassic world had some decent commentary regarding society today and the absolute need to be constantly sensitized by something fresh. The fact the older brother cared more about impressing the next girl (notice how disinterested he was from the first girl we were introduced to) he met than dinosaurs really hit this idea home. Sure yah their story was used as stand-in characters for the audience to hammer home the nostalgia, but i feel their addition was to point at the constant reliance on new things to be satiated. The contrast between the brothers tried to show how we should live our lives like the younger brother and just enjoy the moments...the older brother later appreciating his kid brother and protecting him showed a nice arc. Also your point about grey the younger brother not revealing his knowledge about dinosaurs at any relevant time missed the mark, when the indominus was attacking he clearly notified claire that they needed 'more teeth' to handle the threat. This idea literally saved their lives as it prompted claire to unleash the trex who has 'more teeth'

It not only made for one big plot hole which is why those creatures didn’t pick up anyone else if they picked up her, but it felt so grotesque for no reason other than being grotesque, and was the director desperately trying to manipulate the audiences’ emotions. Yeah, I mean I wasn't a huge fan of the kid in 3, but it didn't really mess up the narrative or flow of the film. The kids in jurassic world were totally pointless and added zero to anything whatsoever. The one in fallen kingdom is just a horribly written disaster. As opposed to Jurassic Park where it was about several subjects, had subtle comedy, and the kids were not just sitting around or purposely being stupid "oh let's go outside the gate" no they were trying to survive. Lex is a brilliant hacker, and Tim "being a kid" is shown but not in the ignorant/moronic way the kids in world are. Honestly I know people really dislike Malcolm's kid in Lost World but the way the whole thing comes together (even if the dino kicking scene is silly) it works way better upon 2nd watch when you realize they were actually trying. The "world" series is honestly paint-by-numbers bs and we definitely could've gotten a way better 4th film if they'd followed the original "extinction" plot where it was a cold/flu/virus and they had to chose whether or not they should be saved, similiar to how fallen kingdom began but devolved into total trash.
@hanburgundy4317

I think it comes down to this: can you remove the characters from the story and still have it function normally? - With Jurassic Park, it would be impossible. Lex and Tim are Hammond's main focus and they are the catalyst to Grant and Sattler's relationship moing to the next level. - With The Lost World, yes; you could remove Kelly and Malcolm's motivations would still be the same: save Sarah. - With Jurassic Park ///, it would be almost impossible. Eric is the sole reason they go to the island. You _could_ workaround this, but it'd take some effort. - With Jurassic World, it'd be easy. Claire doesn't care about her nephews, but "learns to" as soon as they're in danger? I don't buy it. Her whole arc could be just as easily established without them. Add on the fact that the kids are genuinely unlikable and yeah, just ditch em. - With Fallen Kingdom, again it's a yes. You could remove the little clone girl and not have much if any impact on the story. God, it'd be a LOT better without her. Such a stupid decision... clone child... yuck. "They're alive... like me." Thank you for voicing why the end of the movie always feels shallow and like an empty CGI firework to me. i though at least in fallen kingdom, we would get so see a sympathetic side towards the abused animal anomalies that are the indominus rex and indoraptor. but nope, they just recycled the idea of: let me glamorously show you why these animals are extra evil and why you will cheer when they die. both completely fail to tell the actual narrative message that made the book so enjoyable, and made frankenstein's (Wu's) monsters empty shells instead of rich, empathetic story elements. too bad.

I haven’t seen this film since release, but your essay reminded me of what I most disliked about it on my watch: the dinosaurs aren’t allowed to behave like real animals. Part of what makes JP so compelling is the conflict caused by dinosaurs acting on their instincts in a modern world. The characters who survive do so in large part by learning how to respond to those behaviors and respect the dinosaurs as powerful animals who are not acting out of evil intentions but simply the impulse to survive. Jurassic World throws this out the window and instead has the dinosaurs behave in ways that are either too anthropomorphic, or worse, that only make sense as a plot device. The scene where the pterodactyls break out and immediately start snatching guests is one example: why would pterodactyls, who likely ate fish and small animals, start carrying off humans that weigh as much as they do? They most likely wouldn’t pay any attention to the guests unless one of them was threatening their nests. The scene is there just to inject danger and tension at the expense of believable animal behavior. The most egregious example of this is the mosasaur jumping out of its tank (!?) to chomp on the Indominus. I’d checked out by this point in the film but that scene made me actively angry. It doesn’t even have a sheen of believability as something a real mosasaur would do, and worse, turns the Indominus’ death from one that could have had pathos into the butt of a joke. It just underscores how little respect it feels like the writers had for the dinosaur characters as animals trying to survive who are twisted into being monsters by the bad (or cynical) intentions of humans.
@jcohasset23
@jcohasset23 Жыл бұрын
Agreed. Too much happens in the movie just for the sake of tension or action even though it doesn't feel like it makes sense. As someone that's worked and volunteered at several zoos a lot of the park doesn't even make sense nor the behavior we can surmise the dinosaurs likely had based on the behavior of current day animals, and as things slowly spiral out of control the response just seems to get worse. I'd also checked out by the end fight so I didn't care what happened to any of the dinosaurs but it did feel like a cheap way to have the Indominus lose (the mosasaur in the movie is also just way too large and over twice the size of fossils that have been found, and feeding it would cost a fortune).
@caitlindemarismckenna3932
@caitlindemarismckenna3932 Жыл бұрын
@@jcohasset23 That’s interesting that you have experience working and volunteering at zoos! It must have made the liberties the film took with animal behavior even more infuriating. About the mosasaur: when JW came out, someone created a diagram that extrapolated its size based on the size of the sharks it was being fed (how they could afford to regularly feed it sharks is another question). Their conclusion was the mosasaur would have to be something like 600 feet long for it to be in proportion with the sharks it was eating. Obviously mosasaurs weren’t 600 feet long. So the filmmakers didn’t even bother to get basic details like the animals’ sizes right!

@Droemar
@Droemar 4 жыл бұрын
I think the biggest cynicism of the franchise is that every movie except the original derails the park because of human error. The theme of the first book/movie was that humanity can't prepare for every possibility in chaos theory. A natural hurricane brews and knocks out the park. It could be neither stopped or controlled, and creates a domino effect in the park that does the same. And in every other movie it's just "Make everyone fucking stupid so the park and plans will fail." There are zoos that train their employees for 6 week so they don't kill a guar from stress while transporting it, but people heading to Dinosaur Island can't be bothered to look through a pamphlet of dinosaur names, or go through basic reconnaissance training. Everyone is stupid, and that's why everything goes tits up. And I feel like "Everyone is stupid" clashes horribly with the themes of "human innovation and genius creates wonders." People are smart enough to reconstruct dino DNA, but they can't hire a capable SWAT team? Jungle guerilla Navy SEALs? Animal behavior experts specializing in large predators? A fucking paleontologist? Because I'm an armchair paleontologist and even I knew the Indominus would hurt itself "getting over a wall" by sheer physics alone; elephants break legs in a 5 foot drop, so you bet your ass an animal that weighs MORE than elephant couldn't climb over a wall without wrecking it, let alone dropping down the other side of it without getting hurt. But this animal's keepers, who are supposed to be experts, think that camouflage changes that rule? Give me a break. Everyone is stupid. Root for them? Yay!

That was a cathartic watch. You nailed it in every criticism. Now I don't think this is a terrible film but it makes me kind of hate it for what it could have been. I could say that's pretty much true for all the JP sequels at least from my perspective. They each fell further away from what made the original great. Riveting well paced story/plot, interesting combination of well defined/explored characters, intelligent dialogue, and of course interesting concepts. Terrific visuals, action, and tension of course as well. TLW, JW, and JW2 were more flash and less substance to varying degrees respectively. JPIII is practically a big budget made for TV/direct to video family movie so it doesn't even deserve to be included in the discussion. (They did rexy dirty there too so that's another strike.) At this point either reboot the franchise while still acknowledging the first film and go full cerebral horror with or kill it off with dignity/a well made sendoff film. Realistically neither are likely to happen and the milking will continue.

So you're basically saying that this film was made only to remind others that the first one exists? True none of the sequels will never EVER top the original. But when I want to remember the original, I just watch the original. I have a passion for every film in this franchise (and yes, that includes Jurassic Park III) and it isn't only because the original exists. It's because each feels as different as it does familiar. In my own personal opinion, this franchise is like a fishing rod. But nostalgia isn't the bait that brings me in. Its the line that keeps me tied to it.

The most annoying part in my mind is that if you're going to focus THAT much on a nature vs nurture question for your film, don't throw away fundamental parts of how those work for cheap tension. If you're making a point about how something living is behaviorally f-ed up because it was raised in isolation... don't have it know how to "speak" the language of some creature it's never even encountered before. Language is a learned trait- 100% nurture. Given what we know about the Indominus, not only should it not know how to speak Raptor... it shouldn't even know how to speak Indominus. It's like if one of those feral Raised By Wolves kids were found in the jungles of the Amazon... but able to speak perfectly fluent German because his grandfather was from Berlin.

It might be important to note that the book version of Doctor Wu is a way more established character. I'm not going to argue that if you don't read the book you're a poser and that's why you don't understand everything because the film definitely could have done a better job at that if it wanted to. In the JP book, Doctor Wu was enticed to work at the park with the intention of publishing his work, becoming famous/making a name for himself in the world of genetics and at all the big Universities. He debated going elsewhere and ultimately decided to work at the park because it was thought to be best for his future. After some point in the book he realizes that the park not opening would suggest nobody would hear about his work and the last few years of his professional career would have been for nothing and his dreams of using the work to land a top position at a University or a major global award was quickly slipping away. I actually think he was killed in the book if I remember correctly. So seeing Dr. Wu in this film is a bit depressing as we desperately see him trying to keep his work seen and accepted by the rest of world in, what I assume, is the only other shot he's had at a career since the first movie. He's really a bit of a tragic figure disillusioned by the first park like many others.

Instead of having the mosasaur jump in ( which makes no sense given the position of its pen) we could have a the T Rex wear down and kill the I Rex, it could have played out as a kind of tragedy, with Owen watching with sadness as the Indominus breathes its last breath after such a short existence. Again Wu would be a a frankenstein character here, ultimately responsible for the suffering of his own creation.

"The best intentions...some of the worst things imaginable have been done with the best intentions"-Dr. Alan Grant. No but in all seriousness as someone who treasures the original Jurassic park trilogy I loved, loved, LOVED how Jurassic world handled continuing the franchise especially after hearing what was originally planned for the fifth installment. I think what of the biggest reasons why there is more if a divided opinion about the Jurassic world movies instead of just full on hate like the Disney star wars movies is that we know the people working on the Jurassic world movies are fans of the original trilogy and really want to show their passion by actually making the fans happy while also continuing the story the way they think is best. We know any mistake made was an honest one. The exact opposite happened with the new star wars movies. Plus without Jurassic world we wouldn't have camp Cretaceous which is a Jurassic park show I gave been waiting on for YEARS.

Jurassid World is basically Hollywood blatantly saying "Go fuck yourself", to both JP fans and people who just want to see good movies that don't have to parasitize and ultimately destroy the legacy of past works. As said in this video, the movie highlights the problems and tropes of the franchise, but not only doesn't move on from these, but goes even farther than before and even proceeds to both prey on the viewer's nostalgia of the original film and shit on it's legacy almost simultaneously.

Open with her isolation with her twin. Show us the ugliness she was shown that drove her to killing her twin. THAT'S a movie intro. Edit: Hell, even give her the same gag death. The ultimate insult delivered to this tortured creature, now monster, is a death of inconsequence and meaninglessness. In all her rage and hate and destruction, she was but a smaller fish, destined to be food for another, more powerful monster.

You say the film is deliberately undermining his vision, I feel the opposite. It's not quite what he was originally going for, but the fact of the matter is John was originally creating a theme park, not just a prehistoric biological preserve. Jurassic World is that dream realized in a more modern setting. Beyond that, much of what makes JW succeed where JP failed is that not only do they know what to expect and are far more careful with containing their animals (The raptors being housed in a near impossible to escape paddock yet having a lot more running room in comparison to their predecessors while also having their own personal security) and being more careful with their employees (Much of what went wrong with JP is all due to Nedry's interference. Now, there is an entire control room full of people with Nedry's skillset. If one goes bad, one of them is capable of fixing it.) And you offer some one sided points without looking at the full image. Wu, in JP, was a much younger man. JW features a more ambitious man, one who has been influenced by his ego. He is who he should be. He is the man that managed to bring back dinosaurs, so his ego leads him to continue to innovate so no one does it first. Beyond that, even though he says Simon authorized it, it's clear that's just his way of keeping pressure off his own back. More than likely, the indominus was also made like this as a part of his and Hoskins plan. There is a lot to say, but I'll stop here for now.
