It's still shocking to learn that this magnificent film and legendary film score didn't even get nominated for the 1960 Academy Awards??? Had it been though and it would have been swallowed whole by the even better film in "Ben Hur". But the musical score that Ben Hur" also won the Oscar for, I'd have given it to North by Northwest composer Bernard Herrmann - had it been nominated in the first place. Shocking and the Academy really did hate Hitchcock and his films.

My family and I were watching North by Northwest yesterday and I, as always, was fascinated by the music. I have the soundtrack on CD and it is a GREAT CD. The beauty of the music on the CD is that the snippets of the songs played during the movie are played in full on the CD. However, I had never seen any of it performed by an orchestra. This is FANTASTIC!!!! The orchestra performed this flawlessly and it will be one of my favorites up to my leaving this life. Thank you for uploading this song. It further enlarges the performances of film music that I already have enjoyed via FSO, the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and others. I await new entries as the years go by.

A brilliant performance although the speed of the playback seems a little fast. Hermann's own arrangement is so beautifully intense, which at times seems conversational between the sections and then intensely competitive as they layer on top of each other to crescendo. A masterpiece. More than any other producer, Hitchcock understood sound as integral to his films as his star actors or cinematography. Another remarkable film that shows his deliberate and thoughtful use of sound is The Birds, which has no music at all and was.his calculated move to have the sound of the birds' wings and cries punctuate that surreal film and draw the viewer into its surreal proposition. In North by Northwest, the story would not be half as compelling without this theme. The fact that it can be repeated so faithfully from the film's opening across so many of its scenes, establishing the pace of the movie so masterfully, is a testament to the creative genius of both men.

Dear Joie, thank you so much for your fantastic feedback. Maestro Diego Navarro, film music composer and FIMUCITÉ director, added to this stunning performance so much energy and passion. The piece, as written by Herrmann in the score is a “Spanish Fandango”. The “Fandango” is a typical genre (palo), of flamenco. The most famous folk music from Andalucía, in the south of Spain. Navarro, who is from Spain, gave his performance the power and passion of this genre, including the tempo a Spanish fandango has to follow. Very much looking forward receiving more feedbacks from you in our channel!

This is the tempo on the soundtrack, but the soundtrack music was recorded in a studio, not a concert hall, and the instruments were miked so that the music is right "in your face"--no reverb. There IS reverb in a concert hall, which is why this overture is usually played slower in concert.

You are correct. This performance is way too fast. I studied a photostat copy of the full score and looked at the Main Title. Although the tempo is marked Allegro Vivace e con Bravura there is no marking on what note gets the beat. In 3/8 meter the note that gets the beat is the dotted quarter. The first eight bars of the piece covers 5 seconds of music or five seconds of film which is 300 frames (60 frames per second.) I had to figure out the math when I performed this with the university orchestra when I was recording music for my dissertation to get the accuracy of the Main Title pulse. The dotted quarter receives a metronome marking of 88 which by compound time standards is an Allegro and close to Allegro Vivace. The scene being referred to below for us to look at into 1:10 is the drunk driving scene which is slightly faster at MM= 92 which is still within the realms of Allegro Vivace The tempo in this concert performance I clocked at 3 seconds per 8 measures which would make the metronome marking somewhere in the 120 beats. That is faster than what the composer had intended.
@hayden11885 жыл бұрын
A pedantic nit-picking comment. Bernstein conducting Sibelius's 5th slows it down, lets the music breathe. Bernard Herrmann conducting Ralph Vaughan Williams's 49th Parallel slows the tempo down and produces a wonderful performance. This performance turns up the tempo and it works.. It's gutsy, full of enthusiasm, energy, edginess and excitement. Just like the film.

A very difficult work to perform. I doubt if Benny would have applauded this less than ideal performance. A world-class orchestra with a conductor like Dudamel, Rattle or Salonen would be ideal.
