Incredible swim! Katie continues to prove why she's the distance queen with such consistent dominance over the last decade. Remember, she first won GOLD in the 800m at the 2012 Olympics in London. She has 7 Olympic Gold medals and 19 World Championship Gold medals, the most in history for a female swimmer!

I'm a gymnastics fan. I had a conversation with someone the other day on the topic of "Was gymnastics more or less interesting when Simone won SIX all-around golds in a row?" We settled on MORE interesting because there were kinda 2 simultaneous competitions -- Simone vs. her past self, and everyone else competing for silver and bronze! I imagine it probably feels similar for fans of women's distance swimmers in this era.
@NotAghostSpeedruns2 жыл бұрын
I just swim for exercise, and the most I've gotten in one workout is 1000 yards in roughly 30 minutes. Ledecky went more than 50% farther in half the time. That's hard to even wrap my mind around.

I'm reminded of the story of the four minute mile, when it took just the right conditions - including the 3 strongest runners in the world taking part - and pushing each other forward - for the psychological record to be broken. And here is Katie just doing laps in blissful solitude, as if in the world of her own, lapping the competition left and right. Amazing.

@brianh62 жыл бұрын
@@brahmburgers Not true. 35 feet would be about 19% greater than the existing world record for the long jump and accomplished in a single jump (over 16% for the javelin improvement). In this race she set the 1500 short course world record by a little over 1% and her other world records are a little over 2% faster than the person with the world record before her (after multiple incremental improvements). She is the most dominant female swimmer ever and certainly agree she is an inspiration to girls everywhere, but she hasn't done anything remotely close to what you are suggesting.

The time she beat it by works out to over 1%, which is the really crazy part. When thinking about the top 1% of athletes in the world it is crazy to think that one of them could be far enough ahead of every other athlete to compete in that event ever. By comparison, you would only have to beat the Women's 100m dash, an event where strategy is no existent because it is just 'sprint', you would have to beat the WR time by over 0.11sec against a record of 10.49sec set in 1988, so no one has beat that time in over 3 decades.

@MrHarry17552 жыл бұрын
Short and Long Course Pool makes a lot of difference in the timing especially upon touching the wall and kick, the speed is relatively faster on the avg in the short course especially for distance swimmer 400/800/1500m. Personally, I like to watch the long pool course, its awesome to watch how quick they swim especially in the last 100m and 50m in particular. Katie Ledecky normally swim in the avg 1.55-1.56m/s and 1.63-1.68m/s in the last 50m. It would be an exciting race in Paris Olympic if she can maintain the existing world record in the short course pool (Toronto) or even faster. Hoping she is fit and healthy by then.
