THANK YOU for making this video! I have been researching these things (cycloids in general, not just Sm-cyclo drives) and no one has ever demonstrated one being backdrivable. Cheers, man.

I don't think running one backwards under any kind of load would be the best idea. Its not really designed as a speed multiplier. The input shaft also isn't really supported in such a way that would let it handle any kind of side load. glad you got some use out of it. I made these for a new maintenance guy at another plant to explain how to work on them. Figured I had the footage, I might as well toss it up here in case someone else might need to rebuild one.

What is grease used for?

Lubrication. The gearbox is meant to be packed with grease in order to work correctly. Normal service I believe calls for an NLGI-2, I use an NLGI-0 since these boxes do service in an intense radiation field that causes the grease to thicken.
