Final Fantasy 6 Review in 2023

In this video Genjigear reviews Final Fantasy VI and talks about how well it holds up and how it compares to Final Fantasy 7. Final Fantasy VI has a lot of great things going for it, it's beautiful, it's charming, and it has an amazing sound track, but it still has some dated aspects to it that are difficult to deal with in the modern era.

One thing that elevated it for me, was I played all the final fantasies up to that point. In my mind, six was the culmination of that type of RPG era. That kind of special distillation of the series is something that I think is not necessarily going to strike someone who's coming at it from today's perspective.

Absolutely, seeing the games build on each other and then getting VI, it probably felt like the studios hard work was paying off kinda like BG3 today.

we didn't have wikis back in the day, but we did have gamefaqs, so there was still a bit of expected guide-checking even back then

back in 94 there wasn't really an internet, much-less gamefaqs. You bought strategy guides. And while not all the information was correct in those guides, it helped show you 98% of the game.

gamefaqs was founded in 95 and almost immediately filled with faqs for the square rpgs. can confirm that there was definitely an internet, because i used it! the nintendo power players' guide for 6 was pretty good, though

I'm on the FFVI being the best FF game camp. You had to be there, it's been 30 years almost, it's hard for someone to grasp the importance and quality of it in retrospect after being influenced (and even alienated) by more modern games. FFVI has on its favor that it's a very enjoyable adventure and playthrough, specially when compared to the slog that FFVII can be, with it's long drawn animations, unexpressive characters, shody CGI (sorry, but even back in the day it wasn't impressive, it was well done, don't get me wrong, but it felt a bit pedestrian) and pretentious narrative. FFVI feels more like a game telling a folk story, FFVII feels more like a movie wanna be. Now, let's don't forget that Chrono Trigger launched a bit later, perfecting the formula of the JRPG. That was a great time to be a kid. BTW, you should've played the original SNES version, the modern revisions are watered down, revised to be more politically correct, not to mention they look horrible with their vaseline smeared pixels and smartphone like interface. They're terrible versions. Haven't tried the pixel perfect edition though.

Yeah this is the iPhone version. I bought it on sale on steam like 3 years ago, I knew everyone would be mad at me because of the version, but I am not going to buy it for the third time, I think it was absolutely fine. There aren't any changes that drastically made anything different. I love hearing people who love this game talk about it, thanks for the comment! I think if I didn't play FF7 when I was a teenager I might feel differently about it's story, but it really hooked me.

I have to agree with this comment. I may play FF6 again in the pixel perfect version, but only the SNES has the charming original dialog, and is the way it was meant to be experienced. This pseudo-mobile version would make me quit 5 minutes in, so i can't agree when you say you felt what we did playing it in the 90's.

I don't care man, take your gate keeping somewhere else, or pay for the Pixel Remaster for me. I am not buying the game again. I already had this one in my steam library from like 4 years ago because it was the only version available.@@ruinedmirage9722

​@genjigearlive I didn't read it as gatekeeping...I read the comment as a snarky way to say that the iOS version is universally regarded as utter garbage compared to the SNES/PS1/GBA versions. I enjoyed your video and your honest take on the game and this was the first of your videos that the algorithm presented to me. Was going to watch more but I'm not a fan of creators yelling at their audience. Maybe, instead, you could've asked what differences or benefits the other versions had over the iOS version and sparked a productive conversation amongst fans of 6 (of which you freely admit, in your video, that will be the only people watching) so that you may be able to get a more full picture of the game and it's history for if you do go back for a second playthrough. Instead, you snapped at someone who, yes, could've worded their response better, but only ended up putting off myself and possibly other viewers from commenting or watching further videos. Good luck with your channel and I wish you all the best for your efforts.
