It's something of an acendant rumor that has in game ties in to support it. But at the same time, it's something that Square Enix could come out and say "It's False" tomorrow without changing anything in game, too. Personally, though, I like thinking of ten as an ascendant prequel to 7. :)

In FFX-2, there is an Al-Bhed boy named Shinra, who studies a way to use the farplane as a source of energy, he doesn't succeed of course and his descendants take up his work. Spira eventually invents Space Travel and goes gaia, the world of FF7, and Shinra's descendants eventually found the Shinra Corportation and complete their ancestors work.

siroboy12 It's not really just an easter egg. Kitase and Nojima both confirmed it in the Ultimania guides, Nojima was the one who gave the short summary of how they're linked that was mentioned in the last post, and Nomura referenced his explanation several times in other materials. It's really minor, has no real impact on the plot, and they haven't really done anything with it, but it is there.

Like I said, they haven't really *done* anything with it and haven't given any signs that they plan to continue expanding on it since the FFVII Compilation ended. It's like a lot of the things J.K. Rowling has said about the Harry Potter universe since the books ended - technically canon, but pretty much irrelevant to anything in the main stories.

It is canon, actually. Kitase and Nojima confirmed a connection between the two as far back as the FFX Ultimania Omega Guide in an interview. Granted they hadn't really worked out any specifics (they weren't even sure when they wanted them to take place in relation to each other), but they did confirm that they were connected. By the time FFX-2 came around they apparently had a much more solid idea, because aside from numerous implications in the story (especially in the International edition) they once again confirmed it in the FFX-2 Ultimania Omega Guide, and Nojima even gave a brief description of how the two were related. It's a relatively short blurb about Shinra's distant descendants eventually traveling to Gaia via space flight, then experiencing a major calamity (presumably Jenova) that essentially wiped them out and resulted in the loss of their technology, but he does explain how they're related. They then referenced Nojima's explanation a few times in the Compilation and the extra materials. For instance, Dirge of Cerberus and the Advent Children Reunion Files indicate that the new fleet of airships Cid is leading were actually ancient airships running on a foreign power source that were unearthed at Bone Village's archaeological site, implying they were remnants of the technology used by Shinra's descendants. It's an entirely pointless connection that has no real significant impact on any of the stories involved, mind you, but I'd say that multiple references in games from both series and a couple of direct confirmations from Kitase, Nojima, and Nomura probably plant it firmly in canon territory. That said, while they've yet to actually retcon it, they also didn't really do anything worth noting with it. They just kind of...left it there. It would be like them saying that Yuffie decided to open a novelty ninja toy store after Dirge of Cerberus and then never mentioning it again: Canon, but basically irrelevant as anything but a bit of trivia.
