With Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on the horizon, I wanted to jump back into the world of Final Fantasy 7 and I thought there was no better time then now to address Gil's real world value.

It's way too underground to even have a name, as it's a pop-up establishment that'll be gone from Sector 4 by the end of the week.

Watch Japanese streamers play any RPG and you will see them use '円' (えん/yen) as a stand-in for any fictitious currency because it's also the counter for round flat objects, so this is a fairly safe assumption for most games where common objects can be bought for a few hundred local currency.

All fantasy in-game currencies made by a Japanese dev should be presumed to be the equivalent of Yen. They make way more sense that way, as the Japanese measure Yen essentially atomically, from the smallest possible unit of currency, and do not have different denominations of currency like the split between dollar and cents in the US. The "Yen lens" is looking at currency as if the dollar didn't exist, and only cents did.

"There's no fall damage in Final Fantasy." I don't know, falling from the Sector 7 pillar sure seemed to do fall damage to Wedge. Cloud surviving his fall from Sector 5 could be attributed to him being a SOLDIER, or simply plot armour.

The first item I thought to use as a comparison was the grenade. It's 80 gil in ff7 (og) and apparently a real world grenade cost $45.

The problem there is grenades are pretty common in ff7, while I assume they're not for sale in our world. That's why coffee would be such a great conversion tool, it's demand would be similar in both worlds.

When I tried this, I used the Korean BBQ plate to work out the price. The Gil for ff7 flops there. I came out with a 12-15$ Korean BBQ plate being 70 gil. Otherwise Cloud bombed a reactor for... Less than ten dollars.

Now I am wondering what the price of one would be in Hyrule rupees. While that can easily vary by which Zelda game you look at, I personally think thenbest ones to look at are A Link to the Past and BotW/TotK. In ALttP, the bottles are basically mason jars, and you can buy one for 100 rupees, while BotW/TotK has plenty of food items you can cook and then sell, most if which even look to be restaurant quality (such as pumpkin pie in BotW, amd Pizza in TotK) based on their inventory icons.

The Work Gloves break your own rules due to having higher attack power than other weapons, such as the Mythril Claw, which is essentially a bunch of knifes glued onto a glove. Just like the energy drink potion, it does not match its use.

A thing I've noticed about Japanese games versus Western games is that their cultural familiarity with Yen, which doesn't have a concept of splitting off their core denomination into a subdivision (i.e. there is no core dollar that is sub-divided into cents, as the Yen is the smallest subdivision already), is that they concieve of fantasy currency like Yen and total it all up into large amounts very readily, while in Western games they usually keep the total values much lower because the subdivision into cents is culturally acceptable. The result is a bunch of in-game prices that often seem extremely over-inflated to a westerner. As in, I'm playing Dragon's Dogma recently as an example, and you get 10s to 100s of *thousands* of a generic "Gold" currency all the time in the game. But if you know anything about the value of gold in the ancient world or middle ages, even a tiny speck of gold or a small nugget (let alone a full coin) was incredibly valuable. Having tens to hundreds of thousands of gold coins (the presumable standard for a generic fantasy currency) would make you richer than any king or emperor of Europe in the middle ages, and you'll quickly spend this money in-game on maybe a single weapon or two pieces of armor. And not even end game weapons or armor. Mid-game. Wealth beyond the imaginings of anyone apart from Crassus in Ancient Rome or maybe the Malians is completely normal in Japanese games solely because they don't seem to understand how genuinely rare gold was and is when used as currency while at the same time percieving of all other currencies as going through a Yen lens, and essentially calculating all money not on a higher denomination level like the dollar, but on the lowest denomination level of the cent. The only game I remember really getting this concept more correct was back in the days of early Vanilla World of Warcraft, before it became inundated with gold farmers and real money for in game currency transactions. For the first couple of Years of WoW, because currency started at effectively the penny-farthing level with bronze coins, then accumulated into the higher denomination of silver and finally into the highest denomination of gold, you might not see even a single piece of gold until you were around level 20-25, and it cost a player 40 gold to buy their mount at level 40, which was considered for a player to be a *major* financial investment.
