Reflections on Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth: Having not played the original PS1 version extensively, there aren't preconceived expectations about how the game "should" be or how the narrative should unfold. Growing up as a Nintendo fan, the opportunity to fully appreciate FF7 at its peak was missed, but this perspective offers a fresh viewpoint on the game. Despite any elements that might trouble fans of the original, this title has quickly ascended to the top of the favorite list, providing an engrossing experience over the past five days, making it hard to put down.
Gameplay Mechanics: The gameplay is reminiscent of the FF7 Remake, yet it's more refined and fluid. The perfect balance between strategy and real-time action keeps the gameplay engaging. On normal difficulty, the game is not overly challenging, but boss fights do require strategic thinking to exploit weaknesses and time actions correctly.
Narrative Aspects: In this installment, the overarching narrative seems less central, with less focus on the planetary crisis or characters like Sephiroth and Shinra. The main story takes a background role, which is unusual but understandable given the setup in the previous game. It's essential to play the first game to fully appreciate the sequel, contrary to suggestions that it's not necessary.
Character Development: The game excels in developing the relationships between party members, exploring their backstories through side missions. This aspect makes the game compelling, as the motivation to save the world becomes intertwined with the need to save these characters. This level of attachment to the characters and their stories is profound, akin to the connection felt in games like Mass Effect 2.
World and Extras: The game world is vibrant and engaging, filled with minigames and explorative rewards that enrich the lore. While some NPCs are more intriguing than others, the side stories are generally rewarding and add depth to the vibrant game world.
Playthrough Overview: The initial playthrough lasted 65 hours, covering the main story, most side missions related to character development, and substantial exploration of world intel and protorelics. There's potential for many more hours of gameplay, with plenty left to explore and experience.
