A review of the FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE, in a slightly different style. I wanted to try something a little more informal, something more casual and feel like a conversation for this review. This is something I'm trying for reviews of new game releases, since in this style I can get them out a little faster. I'd love to hear your thoughts of this format in the comments!
Also, hit me with all of your Final Fantasy 7 Remake theories. I tried to give myself some time to digest and think about the whole thing instead of diving straight into a review.

Not sure why you didn't like Red XIII... his voice and character were both EXCELLENT. I don't care what the ending implied, it was just thematically way out of place. The whole game was about Midgar and Shinra, and suddenly you're having this epic battle against gods, for reasons that were very poorly described. Aerith's exposition scene was dumb; she suddenly convinced them that this is the most important battle ever, when nobody cared about it minutes ago. And, like, ProJared said, Sephiroth's presence was based entirely on reputation, not anything established in this game. The ending felt like watching Die Hard, but after Hans Grubber is thrown off the building, John McClane goes super saiyan and has an epic battle against the Egyptian gods in the sky. Visually great, but completely out of place from the rest of the story.

I have to disagree with the Sephiroth part. (And spoiler I am not a fan boy of VII. VI cannot be taken from the top spot) I saw him coming in throughout the game, as a means to A - Fuck with Cloud, and get him going down the path he does. B - Keep the focus on him, when it detracted from him. Reminder of his ability to manipulate Cloud. All the black screens with Cloud in the original, I already took as Sephiroth playing with him. So for me, those were just either put on screen proper, or ramped up.
@hazeldaniels1679
@hazeldaniels1679 4 жыл бұрын
@@rioplats the only problem with this is that the epilogue to the midgar section is a terrible ending to a game. It was fine in the context of the original, but in the original, it was the beginning of a much larger arc, not the end of one. From the moment they announced this remake would only take place in the midgar portion, it was obvious there would HAVE to be a new story element introduced, without it, your narrative arc just doesnt really have a climax. It does feel slightly out of place, but it's really not all that bad when we arent overly critical of the concept of whispers. I dont care too much for the whisper story element but it isnt THAT bad, and the outrage some have over the idea that they are going to fall into poorly written heavily alternate universe based plot points, is a bit unfair at this point in time. While everyone has a right to fear about the future of this series, nothing is concrete enough about the ending of this game to make such assumptions yet. I dont think it's fair to be outraged about something that hasnt happened yet, and something we are only assuming is going to happen. I dont personally like the whispers much, but, I recognize that SOMETHING had to be added to allow a climax at the end of this game, and us fans of the original weren't going to be happy no matter what that was. It did give for some shocking moments, like with Barret however, that I appreciate. Overall I'm still looking forward to the next game. On the subject of sephiroth being mostly a villain based on reputation, I agree that the writing here is a bit weak, but honestly, the original was the same way. We did get a bit of backstory in Nibelheim, but even then most of his villainy is pretty vague. I agree it's a flaw, but I feel like it's mostly nostalgia that makes us feel like this is somehow a new flaw.
@Schrodinger_
@Schrodinger_ 4 жыл бұрын
@@hazeldaniels1679 I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with the concept of whispers. I actually like it. The only problem is that they weren't set up very well at all throughout the game. We got that they were nuisances, but the major concern and focus of the plot was always Shinra. The massive epic battle against a god in the end wasn't earned at all in the game. It was a complete 180. Also, you're completely wrong about Sephiroth in the original. We got a shitload of info and scenes with him in the game before the final battle against him. He tormented Cloud and controlled him throughout the game. We learned his full backstory (injected with Jenova cells as a fetus, lived a life as a supersoldier, thrown into Mako, sitting in North Crater absorbing lifestream for 5 years). We learned his plan, which involves summoning meteor so he can create a new wound, absorb more lifestream, and basically become a god. We even had a huge portion of the game where everyone thought it was the apocalypse, and were terrified. The final Sephiroth fight was VERY well earned by the story. In Remake... not even close. Even if there were some mysterious aspects of Sephiroth in original (I would argue no more than that of a typical villain), what matters is we _know_ why we were fighting him. Most of the time in the game's story is spent setting up the stakes of Sephiroth. In contrast, almost all of the time in Remake's story is spent setting up the stakes of Shinra. I agree that they needed something climactic. But they could have done many things, besides this bad ending. They could have done a much better job setting up the stakes of the whispers throughout the game, and have the final battle be against them (no Sephiroth). Or they could have introduced a new Shinra villain who terrorizes you throughout the game, and made _him_ the final boss. Or they could have not made the game end at Midgar. The possibilities are endless. A good writer need not be constrained by the structure of the original.

Goblin idk a lot of of did feel like padding though. There’s a lot of things that just serve to make the game longer than it needs to be. The side quests are for the most part not fun. One of them is just finding cats. Then there is so much of very slowly walking and squeezing through tight spaces. Like A LOT. I swear that take up like 1/4 of the game. The whispers take me out of the story completely. Square doesn't need to justify changing things. As a remake, the story is in their hands to change as they will and since this game expands such a small part of the original, changes are inevitable. If they carried out any changes they planned on without the whispers, it would just be the way things are moving forward.

It's a valid point. I think whether or not a creator (or team of creators) inject new elements of a story to justify meta-textual changes to that story is largely a matter of personal taste, but there are arguments for when such is necessary. Like, if a character dies in a serialized story or book, then in later editions the writer decides to bring them back to life there pretty much needs to be a fairly strong justification built into the narrative for that change or the death feels extremely cheap (looking at you, American super hero comics). But that's usually for Retcons in an ongoing story about past events. What's going on here is far weirder, since, yeah as you said, this is a remake starting from the zero point of the story and any changes they want to make can just be included as they need to occur very naturally. So the effect of in-canon justification for potential story changes seems like a large scale narrative intrusion. Look at so much of the game as is - there didn't need to be magical ghosts justifying why Cloud takes on a bunch of sidequests in places he visited in the original FF7 where they didn't occur, they just include those new elements naturally in to the narrative. On the other hand though, it boldly establishes this series as going down a divergent path, which creates a large question mark as to the outcome of the events going forward. Which does potentially generate more interest in future installments based on wanting to know how it turns out in a genuine sense that wouldn't be there in a more straight forward remake, and potentially eases some fan pressure from those who would demand a more 1:1 rendition of the OG game's events by 100% declaring that things are going to be different here.

@@MidlifeCrisisJoe My opnion is that this game isn't really a remake but a sequel too (Requel like everyone seems to like that new term) somehting about characters coming from the future that alter the present so they have to justify to changes if not this wouldn't make any sens so the Whispers are valid (in my opinion)

Are you using logic despite the fandom panned the latest installment because of the look of the protagonists and because they get from a point to another because it doesn't show it - despite the information you have from before is way more than enough (especially for a fantasy story)? That without considering how fans hate remakes even when they ask for it, simply because they want their childhood to be untouched. This way no story is retconned but they are just telling a new one. Can’t believe it’s taken me this long to realize, but I think Square Enix has a specific bone to pick with fans who want everything to remain the same. *Long-winded spoiler explanation ahead* As anyone who’s made a wildly popular piece of art would know, what people tend to appreciate about that art is often at odds with the artist’s intent for creating it. In my own observation, this often leads to discontent between fan and artist, especially when the artist wants to make more of that art. Some are discouraged and never touch it again, and others give in to demands while the art itself loses that “heart” which made it so special. I think Square Enix is instead deliberately mocking its own fanbase with the inclusion of the whispers, and their subsequent destruction. For all intense and purposes, it seems like the whispers are a personification of fans and their desires. They appear to be omniscient beings for this world that keep the familiar story going even when you can clearly tell they’re not needed in scenarios they show up in. This seems like Square’s strange way of giving the fans a bone, while also giving themselves the creative freedom to do as they please moving forward. By having the whispers destroyed at the end of the game, Square Enix seems to be making a bold statement that they want to remake the game the way THEY see fit, and I get the sense people are going to have to live with that. From an artist’s perspective, their original art that everyone fell in love with is still there, and it can be returned to and enjoyed all over again at any time. However if they’re going to spend valuable resources to re-tell a story they’ve already told in an entirely new form gameplay, this move seems like they’re going to continue doing as they please for as much creative freedom as possible; it preserves their integrity in a weird way. You can disagree all you’d like (and it seems like most old-school fans do) but after playing this Remake first then the original for the first time, I get the impression that Square would rather remake *all* aspects of the game as though it was first released in this day & age. Personally I actually don’t mind these changes. It sure as hell isn’t perfect and I truly do think the original game is leagues better, but I have to appreciate Square Enix for sticking by their guns and actually making something new in a world we love. Is that not the definition of RE-making something? I guess many would disagree… you’re welcome to tell me how stupid I am in the replies ;)

I agree, you still have the original and I still love seeing the ff7 compilation expanded upon. This was basically Square saying this isn't a remake in the sense you'd first imagine but a remake as in a sequel. Storywise all the story beats of the original had to have happened for this "remake" to happen, for those people in the FF7 know they would realize that. Frankly this is a good entry point for newer fans as this stuff would go overtheir heads but this also brings in new fans to the franchise and make them more interested in the story. My thoughts exactly. I loved all the extra characterisation, especially the friendship between Aerith and Tifa because I really wanted to see more of it. While, personally, I am a fan of Cloud x Aerith, I never liked it at the expense of Tifa, if you know what I mean, I liked that these two women got along just fine because, imo, Aerith and Tifa are both absolutely wonderful and iconic characters. And everyone, absolutely everyone (okay, I did find Jessie a little annoying at some point, but her death (?) made me sad, so she's fine) was so much fun to watch. Barret, already one of my favs, became an extra favorite because his motivation was so apparent and so understandable, not to mention touching. Loved that, loved the music, loved seeing familiar locations and constantly thinking to myself, "I remember this!" So many times I had to stop just to look around and admire the detail. But halfway through I switched the difficulty level from normal to easy because battles were starting to get frustrating due to useless AI and I wanted to focus on the story, not that I struggled much but since I wasn't controlling the entire party at once, whoever I was playing as was carrying most of the weight and, to be honest, I just got lazy because I did not buy this for action, I bought it because I loved the original story, plus the pacing was... suffocating, considering that it's 10-15% of the original turned into a game of its own, and I already think that Midgar begins to overstay its welcome just a bit near the end of its segment, so... there was enough of it. Iconic location, great start of a great game, but I'm not sure I wanted this much of it. And, of course, while I am not completely opposed to the idea of reimagining and changing the story of 7, I have some concerns. On one hand, I am curious to see what is going to happen if we are given the freedom to shape the story more or less to our liking or at least a chance to experience a different scenario, but at the same time, personally, I just wanted the same good old 7, a little dolled up with extra content, but true to the original, so I am skeptical and cautious. We'll see, and then we'll judge, I suppose. But at the end of the day, I did not regret playing it, I'm glad I did, so hey, it was a worthy purchase for me personally.

Am I the only OG FF7 player that likes the way the finale of the remake ended? So what if it’s not 1-1.. In the end it’s still going to be holy vs meteor. Nothing will change that. Our hero’s might take another direction getting to it, but it’s still inevitable. People need to relax and realize what a fantastic game the remake is. Can’t wait for the future games, and hopefully there is a lot of them.

I get your gripes about the battle system but when you talked about limit breaks being interrupted but then show clips of characters getting them off without any issues it kind of undermines your point? I think what they're doing is really interesting, so I disagree. I actually bought original FF7 a few days ago because of this. It's hard to say, really. This is totally my opinion, so I'm not trying to say you're wrong or anything. Just having a discussion.

Honestly I like that the party AI isn't great. It kind of forces you to micro manage your attacks and abilities between party members. Makes you switch characters regularly and think more strategically. I really think they nailed the battle system as a perfect hybrid of turn based (ATB) and Action RPG. I think having settings for the AI is warranted but I'd love to see them have an option to leave the AI like this for part 2. Maybe they could have multiple AI settings e.g. attack orientated, defense orientated, support / healing orientated and a minimal actions option. I think it's definitely one of the most fun battle systems they've ever had in a final fantasy game. The stagger system gets better the more time I spend with it. 1 trophy away from platinum now and I've loved every second of it! I don't even really mind the ending too much, there's loads of great fan theories being spouted about because of it and I think Square got exactly the kind of reaction they were looking for. It's divisive af which means EVERYONE is gonna be talking about it.

The new update is a serious quality of life update so it has become very simple to upgrade the original to HD. So, now is definitely the time to play the original. Which I'm going to do now, now that I have finished this part of the remake.

3 Whispers are Loz, Yazoo and Kadaj, the AC. Big Harbinger Whisper is Jenova. Officially confirmed in Ultimania. Ending Sephiroth is post-AC, from the future. Watch the Dropped Frames spoilercast to understand story better. Remake is a sequel to the original, so both HAVE to exist. I love it. And I love that you can be interrupted and that it's punishing. You're supposed to change between character all the time and supposed to fill ATH the same way. Game encourages you to do that.

I feel that the most plausible explanation for the ending is that Square Enix did not have anything else to milk FFVII with, so they're now making up paralel worlds in order to be able to sell manga, drama cd's, light novels, games, or whatever else containing secondary character's stories in the alternative worlds and how their lives are after major changes. Time travel and Paralel worlds is not an easy subject to touch upon, specially if the series is not entirely dedicated to the subject to make a coherent story out of it, so I don't see this end well. And Square Enix's track record with it has been disastrous, to say the least.
