I’m 15, and my first play through was on Switch this year - if you’re worried about this game being outdated compared to modern games, I’d say it still holds up really well.

it's kind of funny... I was 15 myself when I played it in 1997. :) and I have to tell you, it was a magical game to behold at the time! I hope you had a wonderful time with game! I still think the story holds up really well, and in a way, I still appreciate is the simplistic graphics. The whole game becomes much more of a literary experience, since you need to use more of your imagination to portray the world, the characters, their feelings and the events that occur. It is something I feel has disappeared over the years with better graphics. The player doesn't have to be involved in story telling, they are much more passive "viewers" nowadays.... This is something I think about myself as a game developer today.... how to engage players more, how to tell a story that is partially told through the players imagination.

Eh, I disagree. A lot of the game has a very obtuse design philosophy and traversing the overworld feels tedious to the point that I consider it filler.

@Little Idols Actually, I got lost a lot and didn't know where to go because the map doesn't mark places you've already been. Like, if they tell you to go back to Midgar and you don't know where that is... Have fun wandering around for 15 minutes because you walk slow and constantly get thrown into random encounters. this problem is mostly fixed when your airship is able to fly, but before that... yeah, I had use an online guide to get through.

@@Patrick-bn5rp To be honest, if you compare FFVII and FFVII:Remake, I would say that the remake has much more fillers than the original. a lot of unnecessary fetch quests and missions that doesn't add anything substantial to the story.... The fights, although more engaging, are also much more time consuming than the random encounters in the original . I actually look at the original FFVII as a much more compact experience, especially when thinking about how much the game covers, in terms of story, themes, character development if you compare to the remake. :) i would actually prefer if the remake was 20 hours long instead of 35-50hours.

Pixel Shade it was part of what made me beg my parents for ps1 (FF Tactics also helped.lol). I think I was 10 or 11 at the time. Loved the gameplay and the story. Even going back and playing through it today I’m enjoying it much more than FF7R. It didn’t take me long to get bored of FF7R with all the hollow side quests and stretching out a 5 minute segment into 15-20 minutes.

@@evildeadfan420ify oh man, I was going to reply to Jacob Nitke (since we are the same age) sorry for the little age confusion going on. :) Same here, I remember it so well, I remembering spending all of my savings on a Pentium 166MHz the year before (which I was truly happy about). And then the PS1 came around with promises of the future and there was no way in hell I could save up 300$ easily. My parents didn't have a lot of money back then. And I remember getting stuff for around 50$ for birthday. What I didn't know was that they saved up for me and my sibling when we turned 15 (which basically "sweet 16" in Sweden, we are allowed to drive motorbikes and stuff) and they got me a PS1. I couldn't believe my eyes. I have never been happier. :) and FFVII kept occupied for years. I played that game over and over again, and found new stuff and details. great game at a great time in life. :)

But if you arent bothered or like (like me for example) ps1 graphics and cutscenes. You can choose the original. I chose the original and I dont regret it. But I Think the remake also isnt Bad.

Gabriel Ike The original is far superior to the Remake, not graphics wise but story wise. If your looking for gameplay over story, then go for the remake. The remake completely destroys the pacing and you don’t get the full story. For example, you will be 12 hours in and still be in the exposition part of the game.

I say 9/10 for me. Some transition & 3D model haven age. Though they're guilty pleasure of mine. And an few stories written was kinda confusing. But overall, I still think the game is amazing. From it's time and still is to this day. No games are perfect. But that doesn't make them bad or mediocre as long the quality of the game is good enough and FF7 did it perfectly fine.

If we can talk about the story of FF7 alone, it was my first FF after playing Remake and Rebirth on my PS5. I would say between 8 and 10 at varying moments is accurate. Very very good and will also go on and say can't believe I slept on the FF franchise for so long. Played FF16 immediately after Rebirth, and was also amazed, yet in a different way.

When I was a kid I was obsessed with rpgs like Pokémon and a link to the past. Ffvii and ocarina of time were the first 3D games I ever played, and they actually blew my mind graphics-wise. I have a soft spot for those low-poly models and pre-rendered backgrounds. Btw, I also think pre-rendered backgrounds can still be done well, just look at the first Resident Evil: Remake! Those backgrounds are top-notch! I actually thought they were 3D environments my first time playing through them

@@rodrigopimentel9380 Thats true with every person who chooses to own one console. You will always miss out on exclusives. Best thing to do is to get two. Though I would say its best to not get the PS4 and Xbox One. They are too similar. Xbox One+Switch or PS4+Switch or PC+Switch is the better way to go. Basically Switch makes the best secondary console this gen because its actually different from the other consoles. Me myself I went PS4, Switch, PC, (Not counting WiiU and 3DS). With the Switch being is my main go to console.

Well I did it I beat the game! It was amazing. Exceeded my expectations in every way possible. In the beginning I was playing just for the story but it became more than that. Once I actually bothered to learn the Materia system I enjoyed it much more. It was fun moving around peoples Materia and creating the best team I could. I think story wise it was great. Some confusing moments for sure, but it didn’t bother me too much as I don’t need to understand every detail personally. (I’ve played kingdom hearts games it doesn’t get more confusing than that). One problem I had with the game was figuring out where to go. I liked the pre rendered backgrounds...but sometimes they made navigating where to go hard and confusing. There were multiple parts in the game where I needed a guide to know where/how to go. Maybe that’s just me though. Random encounters made that process even more stressful. But that was really the only major flaw I could think of with the game. I think once I got the highwind I didn’t have any problems with that actually. It made navigating the world faster, easier, and more fun. I actually came to love the graphics personally. Once I got highwind I explored the workd more, got all level 4 limit breaks and all ultimate weapons for cloud Tifa and cod, who were my 3 favorite characters. The blocky character designs and 3D backgrounds. At first glance some people may say they are ugly, but to me they had a unique charm that I’ve seen no other game have. The word was so fun and full of life, I think the soundtrack was the biggest part of this. The soundtrack of this game is one of the best I’ve ever heard honestly. Ahead on our way, the main theme, Aerith theme, tifas theme, and one winged angel were my favorites. Sorry for such a long comment, just thought I would give my full review here. I LOVED the game. I’d say it was incredible considering it’s 23 years old! In conclusion, I would personally say it’s definitely worth a playthrough in 2020. I played it without any mods, just how it was on the PlayStation 1 and t was so much fun! Enjoyed it from start to finish. Played it for 43 hours total and it was so worth it! People sometimes credit this games high reputation to simply nostalgia, but it is more than that. I played it 23 years after it’s release with no nostalgia and would say it’s one of the most enjoyable games I’ve ever played.

Hey great review! It is a timeless game. I never had a PS One. But I had a PS2 in 2001, my first Playstation system, and it was backwards compatible with PS One games so that's how and when I played it because I had heard so much about it. So I played it technically late too but my first time was nevertheless just as impactful for me. I remember thinking that if this game was so incredible in the age of PS2 graphics to a new player I had a feeling it would be the same for new players for decades to come. It's so solid.

Maybe I'm old, but turn based RPG is my favorite kind of RPG. It's relaxing, but it's also strategic. It's like chess, you have time to think about your next move and make the best one. Modern RPGs are basically just becoming Action games.

If you haven’t played this game, is definitely worth your time if you came here to the comments. I played it first on the PSP and I was nicely surprised by the plot twists, music and whole world in general, it still transmits that years after. And that final battle... I was laughing (in a good way) by how crazy they made it, a total show off of style. I think is very impressive even after FF6 final battle. If you happen to play it, then try to play Crisis Core, an amazing FF7 experience that I enjoyed more than I thought. Then watch the extended version of the movie, you will want anyway. I’m not a super fan like others (I think Cloud is overrated sometimes by people, I prefer FF6 and DQ5) but after playing this you can tell why so much excitement about this game.

Played this to death on my widescreen Sony monster in the 90's! Tried it on my PC but it wasn't the same. On switch, though, it's different as it's far better on a TV with decent sound. Brilliant game with a deep, modern fantasy story (that still feels highly relevent and fresh), amazing characters, immersive soundtrack and a near perfect turn based battle system. The materia system, also, is fairly easy to learn but deep enough for plenty of on-the-fly customization. It is a little too cute and goofy at times, and the controls in the rendered areas are clunky, but it's worth it. The satisfaction of seeing an epic boss shatter and hearing that unforgettable fanfare is so addictive!

When FF7 came out I didn't have a Playstation. My friend did, and I watched him play it a fair bit, but I didn't attempt it myself until a few years later when I bought a PS1 to do it. By then, the unclearness of just where I could and couldn't go on the prerendered backgrounds, as well as the dynamic angles in battle making selecting which enemy I wanted to attack more difficult than it should have been, left me frustrated and I gave up on it after booting it up after saving the game in on the overworked and realized I had no idea where I needed to go. But, with the rerelease, which only covers the first...quarter(?)of the story i've been giving a lot of thought to going back and actually finishing a game I've loved conceptually for a long time. Especially since my BRother and Son NEVER experienced the original. So that's why I'm here, to get some perspective on if it would be worth it for me to buy the game again and play it all these years later.

I'm playing through this for the first time, and loving it. What really helped me is playing a lot of snes games, and finishing final fantasy 6 first. You can then finally see the huge leap they made with this game. And just looking through it and using your imagination helps too... But it's hard!

@Aaron9 I actually liked FF9 or FF12 better, I'm not saying they are greater or anything, since FF7 made them possible. In terms of greatness Breath of the Wild kicks ass (although it possibly kicks any other game's ass tbh). An unfair comparison? Possibly yes, especially due to the age of FF7.

Absolutely. I would even argue that if someone is new to FFVII and enjoyed Remake? FFVII on Switch is a perfect way to get even more. Angry Joe loved Remake for instance so he even bought the original on the Switch because he loved the remake and it's characters so much. Not to spoil anything but I think that the two complement each other and playing the original offers greater context for the remake. Finished FFVII on Switch (2nd time, 1st was on PC). I also finished Remake and am working on the Platinum. It does show it's age to some extent but the character models still have a charm to them. They were able to convey a lot of personality with the simplest of animations despite their blocky arms and polygonal bodies. The Switch version I find to be superior to the Vita version (bigger screen), unless you care about achievements. But the the enhancements like x3 speed, disabling random battles, and character boost? Make the game accessible to newcomers. And when your trying to get the gold chocobo later? That x3 speed is a godsend! For what it's worth? You can buy both FF7 and FF8 remastered on one physical cartridge! Amazing how things come full circle!

As an 97 kid, growing up on Final Fantasy, especially FF7; I can tell you the remake is spectacular. Easily the most beautiful game on the PS4 to date. It’s 1/3rd of the game but the side quests are quite fun. Love it! 2023 pt 2 comes on on the PS5. Enjoy!

The music of this game. It triggers such an emotional nostalgia for me. I remember being 15 and pulling an all nighter grinding in the game. And the chills I get from the sight of sephiroth. Playing the remake I had to really stop and observe the world and just take it all in. I love that they didn’t change the music.

I was 9 when I first experienced the demo. Mystic quest was my first FF, though I only knew it as quest. Anyways I need the full game after playing the demo I couldn't wait. I was captivated by the Darkly beautiful midgar and the state tier struggle avalanche was facing. The music, characters, story, everything was taking my senses captive and to this day is my favorite franchise and my top 2 favorite FFs and games ever.

I just bought ff7 for switch on sale because I just finished the remake. I also had never beaten the wall market section of ff7 as a kid because I didn't understand collecting the items to cross dress to trick the Don and save Tifa. Honestly I can't wait to get back to that part and get through the game. Thank to whomever ported the old ps1 ff games over. They did a public service

Ive tried different versions of FF7 in modern times. And of all of them i prefer how it looks and feels on the nintendo switch both portable and tv mode. Specially on the Oled. Idk what it is but when i played it on pc the backgrounds looked waaaay too pixelated and low res and the whole game felt ugly. And on ps4 i felt the backgrounds were way too blurry. On switch, wether tv or portable (but specially portable) the game looked PERFECT. The backgrounds didnt look pixelated at all and it blended very well with the high res polygons. And i felt they didnt stick out as much as other versions. It felt to me like the best way to play it. It looked colorful, and charming. My preferred modern version. Not to mention its the only platform where u can get it physically.

I'm not sure when or how often the game was released on PC, but if it was the original port back in the day, I can see why. Blowing images that were made for 240p into the PC resolutions of the time with a good monitor (Especially with a high-end monitor that could go to 1400×1050 or higher!) was not going to look good. Pre-rendered backgrounds suffer greatly when blown up - just another reason they had to be left in the dust.
