It looks like we will actually be fighting summons with summons and they actually fight each other rather than doing an animation and leaving. This looks insane. I knew the combat would be sick because of the DMC director thing, but man, they really went all out with implementing the summons and making them feel insanely strong. In a lot of parts, you can see like armies in the bottom fighting or running while the summons duke it out. This just looks crazy cool.

I love how different this feels from the other FF games we’ve had, but it still feels very Final Fantasy what with the theme of “defying fate” that is prevalent in many of the previous titles. For example, the opening crawl present here fits with FFXII, FFX, and FFXIII. The combat looks awesome, and I LOVE the huge Eikon battles. It reminds me of Noctis vs. Leviathan/Titan, but taken to another level (and this time YOU’RE controlling a Summon). I wish it was sooner than Summer 2023 because Yoshi P said when it would be next announced the release date would follow soon after, but it is what it is. 😭

I want to point out that I love Yoshi-P efforts to have people be overwhelmingly excited for 16 and that excitement carry on to an eventual 17. That is why he want to evolve the series and the JRPG genre, so both are not beholden by a fix preconceived notions or elements (such as the turn based combat). A little bit of context: The original Final Fantasy was basically an adaptation of Dungeons & Dragons, using almost the exact same combat as D&D, which became a staple of FF. Having a party with an ensemble cast with different classes, abilities and backstories is not something unlike the parties of D&D either. So after experimenting with many titles and making risk with every and each one of them, Yoshi-P and his team are making an RPG like nothing before has happen in the history of the franchise. I think Yoshi-P has the right idea if he’s the one to bring FF to the mainstream again like it was in 80’s through the early 00’s. Because at the end of the day Final Fantasy has and it always have been, an IP that reinvents itself each game.

Oh I am definitely expecting Tonberry and it’s very dangerous knife probably an instant hit kill if you get hit. We’ll definitely have a desert area so Cactuar is bound to be there most likely as a high xp/rare item if you kill it before it runs away.

With all the praises sung and my hype being through the roof, I would like to take a moment to address my biggest concern with this game: the combat UI. It's very videogame-y and looks straight out an arcade/mobile game, with its flashy numbers. While I do like the bottom half with its item and ability windows, the middle and top part are too overwhelming. The damage numbers are fine in normal combat, but the yellow font during special or stagger attacks should be reduced. At 1:05 you can't even see your target. The abilty/combat log on the right is straight up redundant. Nobody will look at that during combat, please make it toggleable. The HP/LB bars are too bright and in my opinion should be moved to the bottom and minimized. Personally, I like my top half of the screen to be clean and only filled with an occasional boss bar top center. Please make it more minimalistic. It would also fit the theme of the game better, as right now this looks more like a sci-fi/fighting game. Again, I am very pleased with this trailer and the game so far, but I had to get this off my chest.
