Here it is everyone! Try to hold back your tears! Today we're flying on, for the very last time, an American Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-83. Join me as we fly from Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) to Chicago (ORD) on American flight 80. Filmed yesterday, this video was definitely bittersweet to make. Enjoy!

Thanks for making this great video. I think we had our best 138 customers on that flight (many of them AA employees, many long time loyal customers). Greg made the takeoff from the right seat at DFW and I (Clint) made the landing in the left seat at ORD. Those are the best parts to watch in the video. I did the TO from ORD and he did the landing at ROW. Thanks to you all for making that otherwise depressing day so fun and memorable. I thought the flight attendants really MADE the day.

Wow did you ever make my day with this video on such a bittersweet day on the Retirement of one of my all time favorite aircraft to fly and to ride! - Thank you So So much for paying tribute to the AA Super 80 and allowing those of us who could not make the last Pax journey on Flight 80 with you all the opportunity to experience the sights, sounds, and AA Super 80 Goodness many of us out here so loved to fly! Even though I did not get to join you guys I was there in spirit the whole way! As a Pilot and a huge AvGeek to the extreme, I knew your routing to ORD would probably take you very close to my home here in Central Illinois so I tuned into FlightAware and LiveATC to follow the flight up. Just as Capt Clint and Greg literally started the initial descent outta FL290 into Chicago I ran outside to catch you guys flying just to the west of our home with the sun beautifully reflecting off that really shiny Super 80! My wife could not believe how excited I was to see you guys flying over! As a Huge AvGeek to the extreme, I will be paying tribute myself to both the AA Super 80 and the AA Boeing 727-200 by converting the front half of a real MD-83 and 727-200 I purchased into fully functioning flight simulators with fully operational first class cabin and partial coach sections with complete AA interiors and equipment I have been collecting over the years. Need to work on finding a few more AA Super 80 first class and double coach seat sets! It will take a lot of hard work and unbelievable amounts of rewiring but I will get them virtually flying the skies once again in tribute to my favorite airline and the last of the classic airliners that flew with AA! Long Live the Super 80 :)) What a Send Off it was! My wife still thinks I am nuts but man what fun it is and how cool is it to have an AA Super 80 and 727 in your backyard in a building that will be a virtual ORD to boot! Thanks again for sharing!!

I worked Final Assembly on the MD-80 Line at McDonnell Douglas Long Beach Ca from May 1989 to May 1993. A great company to work for and an awesome aircraft to build. This brought back some great memories and a tear to my eye.

As I was watching the flight and staring at the wing it reminded me of how wonderful, beautiful, and pure the foil remains. And with this configuration, no engine hanging beneath it, it's so majestic and clean and everlasting... Well, not for this specific bird... In 2016 I flew on one of American's MD80s for the first (and last) time from IND to DFW, unfortunately on the way there and back I was right at the very back seat next to the engine lol, so I could barely see anything but it was still neat to be on, and glad I could at least fly on it once in my life lol. This is so sad. It breaks my heart every time a classic aircraft is retired. I nearly cried when they flew the 737-200 and the BAC 1-11 for the last time. Will never hear those loud engines roar on take off again. Then the Concord was retired for no real reason. Now the Mad Dog. Watching this video, I felt like I was actually there and sharing the experience so thank you so much for letting us be part of it. Wish I could buy it and keep it flying. I was on AA 739 from PHX to ORD on the 4th got into ORD at 13:28 and proceeded to taxi for 30 minutes which included us getting turned away from our gate the first time being told the gate was "busy" and having to taxi around the taxiways again and finally get into our gate K-5 at 13:58. After I got off the plane and seeing all the balloons about the Super 80 retirement and a lot more AA employees than I was used to now I know why. Thanks again for the video and I will miss the MD-80 family of planes very distinctive and not hard to miss and identify.

I, along with many of my colleagues and friends flew these wonderful jets for the production side of McDonnell Douglas Long Beach thru the 1980’s. The 80 was truly a pilots aircraft, easy to fly, reliable and uncomplicated. Sad to see it go to the aircraft boneyard.

My first DC 9- Super 80 flight was on PSA in 1986? My parents made friends with a pilot from PSA and I got to fly on an md80 flight simulator once at about 14 years old. I landed in San Diego after doing some fun stuff, like trying a stall recovery. Unforgettable. Through the years I sometimes got tired of flying “ANOTHER MD-80”, but loved the seating configuration and sitting on the left in my bachelor days. Farewell old friend!

Man, I am sure going to miss them. Every day around 5:30-5:45pm an American MD-80 would takeoff and fly over my house and I would run outside to see it. That is what got me interested in airplanes and I miss it everyday, now I hear the 737 but it will never replace the iconic MD-80.

I worked at the McDonnell-Douglas plant in Long Beach in the 80"s-90s. I was present when this last MD-83 rolled off the production line in December 1999 (N984TW). It had a ceremony being the last MD-80 airplane built in Long Beach. The airplane was delivered to TWA originally butTWA became defunct. The plane was transferred over to American Airlines. This was a special airplane.

I flew AA last time was May, 1997 one in B-757 from Seattle to Dallas then changed to MD-83 to Huntsville. We stay there about 4 days for the bowling tournament. On Tuesday we flew MD-83 from Huntsville to Dallas and changed the same plane as MD-83 from Dallas to Seattle and I will missed the MD-80's. MD-83 was so beautiful!!!!

American Airlines did a Great Job and a Respectfull Retierement Party on this ever last Flight of a Mad Dog. The Giveaways for the Passengers are very Cool. 😢😢😢 I had the pleasure to fly on N9616G last Sunday from Houston to Dallas. Very bittersweet moment to fly on the MD83 for the last time. I’ve always been a DC9 fan. That plane type will be truly missed by me for sure. At least I still can fly the MD88, MD90 and B717 with Delta.

Thanks for recording this! I actually felt like I was in the plane and immersed, despite not flying for a while due to the COVID-19 situation and having been a few years since I last flew on a Maddog. I would hate for it to retire with no footage from retirement flights. Sadly that was the case for Air Canada's 767, E190 and classic Dash 8-100, three childhood planes that nurtured my love for aviation. 767 Air Canada was my first transatlantic flight and the Dash-100 connected my small regional hometown airport to bigger Canadian hubs along with the Dash-300 and CRJ, all Canadian planes (and the Twin Otter of course) with the exception of the 767 obviously. Looks like American weren't able to retire their 757 and 767, E190 and maybe even A330 (although A330 could make a return in two years) with much fanfare.

I was glad to be able to bring this to everyone. Sadly, I had plans to fly as many retirement flights as possible, but that all changed with Covid. At least I was able to do this one and the Delta MD-90, which fun fact, was the last MD-90 flying anywhere in the world. So, not only was it the last Delta MD-90 flight, but it was likely the final MD-90 flight of all time.

@@sla31 Yeah, that's crazy. In mainline airlines, only the 717 is available and then some MD-80's in Venezuela of all places. Maybe I'll try to venture there one day lol! At least the 717 has MD blood.

Brilliant video. My first ever flight was on an MD-83 (Manchester, England to Lanzarote). So quiet & effortless on take off ! Both captains' admiration for the aircraft clearly comes across in their words to the cabin. I never fully understood the 3 x 2 seating effect on the aircraft's balance ? Anyway, thanks for the film - a lovely goodbye to a great plane.

Seen many a MD-80 on aprouch to D/FW from my back yard. Read about AA retiring the old birds and after watching this video I have seen the last of the MIGHTY MD-80. Never to fly the Friedly Skies again. You did well MD and all the crew that kept her flight ready! I tip my hat to you!

Thankfully, Delta still has the MD-88’s flying for another year and the MD-90’s aren’t supposed to be retired until the early 2020’s. The 717’s will be around for probably another decade or so too.

I worked at TPA from 1986-2001 for Sky Chefs and Gate Gourmet and I catered this aircraft when it was TWA and American Airlines. This is a sad day for me. So long Super 80 , you will be missed.

My wife and I worked at McDonnell Douglas/Boeing for 61 years between us. I am so proud to have the best job of my life. Even thru the ups & downs it was great. The people, the customers and suppliers made this happen. American Airlines the airlines who made the MD80 become a successful aircraft. Yes Delta still has MD88, MD90 and B717 (which is really a MD95) and the aircraft still serves a purpose to make Delta what it is today. One day the last MDC airplane will fly someplace somewhere and retire as do all aircraft. Until then long live the MD series aircraft. Enjoy while you can.

I grew up traveling by air often due to my father working overseas when I was little. Lots of hours logged in various planes - plenty of Qantas 747s, plenty of Singapore Airbuses, plenty of Garuda 737s, plenty of Northwest DC10s and Mesaba Saab 340s. I can’t say that the MD80 was the first plane I ever rode. But when I joined the working world, I had to fly often for training, meetings, etc, and that is when I had my first taste of the MD80. Got to sit in the rear just a row ahead of the engines, and that is where I fell head over heels in love with the MD80. I don’t know exactly what it was that really got me hooked - the buzzsaw sound from those JT8D’s, or the 400 hz hum on the PA, or the shiny aluminum finish on the plane, or just the classic look, but from that point on, if I could work an MD80 ride into any trip, I would. I would always try to select a seat back near the engines to hear their sweet buzzsaw sound - that was just music to me. I’d book Delta’s MD88s and 90s when I couldn’t book an MD80, but the MD80 was always preferable. Even the seats in those MD80s just seemed to accommodate my fat ass better than the seats in most other planes. I think it was in 2017 or so when the MD80s were originally supposed to be retired, so I made sure to take my bride for a ride in one just to give her that experience. Round trip from ORD to DFW and back, no overnight, no nothing, just pure MD80 time. Of course I was happy to find out that they would be around for another couple years after that, but I moved for my work, and unfortunately that was my last time in an MD80. I believe that it is important to understand and witness change as it is happening. Whether it be agriculture transitioning from horse drawn implements to steamers to gas tractors to diesels and the horsepower race to computer controlled equipment with precision GPS, or whether it is the face of railroading changing and adding technology, or mining and minerals processing progressing, or just something as simple as aircraft being replaced by newer, more advanced, and more efficient aircraft. Because of that, I made sure to take her on a 787 ride from ORD to LAX. Regardless, the MD80 will always hold a special soft spot in my heart. Sorry to see an old friend be retired, but the memories will be there, the videos I shot out the window of the planes will be there, and hopefully AA will donate a mad dog or a few to places that can put them on display or use them for educational purposes. Sad day, I grew to love the MD-80s and the experiences I've had on them over the years from strong crosswind landings on the USS LaGuradia to spring storms north of DFW and how well this aircraft performed under all conditions. I also took comfort knowing how much the pilots enjoyed flying them. So long AA MD-80, and thanks for sharing a great video!

Flying from Seattle Anchorage Atlanta and Dallas ft worth "in the past 1990s" on md80,82,83,87,88 Alaska Reno Air DELTA AMERICAN They were truly fun to fly on and they are the smoothest flying well handled a/c in my opinion.

Hard to hold back the tears. I probably flew on the MD-80 a thousand times since it was introduced into the fleets. Most of my flights on the aircraft were with either Trans World or American Airlines with a few on other carriers. Never experienced a serious issue in the many flights onboard this aircraft type. In fact, the only issue I ever had on the aircraft was in Seattle while aboard a Trans World MD-80 when one of the lavatories overflowed while the plane was still at the gate. It was interesting watching the blue fluid flow down the aisle as people scrambled out of its path. But beyond that, it was a smooth aircraft that was very reliable and always got me to where I was going. It is sad to see all of them being retired, but I guess everything, and everyone does eventually. Farewell, old friend and thanks for the years of safe rides!

I flew the American MD's from OMA to DFW several times and once on a MSP - DTW (or GRR, it was ages ago). When my son really decided to become a pilot a couple years ago, we would try to get some pics and videos of these planes departing or arriving if we happened to be somewhere with an airport they serviced. Toward the end of their life cycle, we were able to get some of the AA versions at OMA, DSM and ORD plus the Delta versions at GRR, OMA and STL. Good old bird along with the DC9 which I flew several times from SUX to MSP back in the late 90's.

I've been lucky enough to have flown in the MD-80 series (82, 83 and 88) a combined six times now, and they have all been great flights. It's a very smooth flying airliner, and up front, the least noisiest of all the rear-engined jets I've flown in. Of course, nothing beats the engine startup or the spool-up sound of those JT8Ds! Thanks for uploading this video, it definitely brought back some good memories! Also, I think it was very cool of AA to have all that MD-80-related gear and paraphernalia and encourage you all to leave comments on the cabin walls! "As I understand, in my next airplane I might have to learn French." Bahahahaha! Best comment of the whole flight.

I’ve only flown twice with American Airlines, both of them with the md-80. Lots of memories sitting behind the wings. They may have been old planes, but they sure got the job done. That first flight in 2006, I left my jacket behind, and got I back once I came back to the gate. Now it’s probably the airbuses and turboprops doing the jfk to o’hare route. Real good times.
