The young boy that was killed in a helicopter crash was my nephew Jackie, he was 12 years old. Gerry was his uncle and Gerry,s twin Jack was the father. This was a tragedy for my brother and our family.

So sorry for such a terrible loss that your family had to endure. I've heard from another Randy Rhoads fan who visited this place unannounced, just to see it with his own eyes, and was met with a member of your family, who he said was very kind to him. Learning this very sad fact makes that story even more touching now.

I will agree that Sharron as Tour manager would bare the responsibility for hiring and firing, but how could she know about the guys history unless she had done a background check or knew his history from another source? This is before the general population had access to the internet. I am going to assign blame to Aycock for being irresponsible and bringing two unsuspecting victims with him when he should not have been flying period! Amazing how a bad decision can lead to a series of inevitable mistakes! RIP Randy Rhodes & Ms. Youngblood 💔

I heard a story about the pilot here was previously hired to drive for Ritchie Blackmoore's band. On the first day, Ritchie met Andy and then told his tour manager to fire him and the reason he gave was that Ritchie got a vibe that Andrew had a bad vibe around him and feared he would kill his band in a crash. If that's true, it's very errie.
@acepaul407
@acepaul407 Жыл бұрын
That story came from Joe Lynn Turner. There regular bus driver was supposed to go on vacation with his family so they hired Andrew instead. Ritchie took one look at him and said, 'I don't like his aura, hire him and get our old bus driver back. Whatever it takes just get him here.'

I've seen a lot of videos over the years about this tragic incident that took Randy from us. This, I would have to say is one of the better ones. Really well done. Simple, factual and transparent. The one thing I can say with some certainty is that Randy was one of the few with his head screwed on straight on that bus. Randy was not a big drug user or drinker. Especially in the early morning. And I would also say that if this guy was always lit up on Coke, then maybe that's just how everyone knew him to behave and didn't think much of it. Regardless of any assumptions, We lost a brilliant artist that day. Randy had been my guitar teacher for years before he left to do the Ozzy thing. I remember exactly where I was when I found out he had passed. The tears I shed that day were many. Not a day goes by where I don't think of him, especially since I play the guitar to this day and his teachings still are a part of my style. Thank you so much for this story. Well done. RIP RR.

Thanks for sharing. I am a guitarist, too, but nowhere near the level that you must be. (I don't even know how to use a pick.) To have Randy Rhoads as a teacher, that must've been bad ass. I hope you are passing on the knowledge. ✌

@@aaronstasel8292 Man I wish every day that I had been a bit more mature and had paid attention more during my lessons with Randy. I was pretty young at the time and hadn't really found my identity as a guitarist, but he was super patient with me and there are actually things I use to this day that I learned in that tiny little room. At the time, no one had any idea that Randy would go on to become the legend he did. I just thought, "My teacher is the baddest guitarist in the city".Who knew he was going to achieve the things he did. But I do try to pass on little things here and there when I can. I am so blessed to have been given the opportunity to know him and study with him. I never take that for granted.

@@douglassloan6831 Kudos for that. Learning how to play music, struggling through music theory, it is a different experience for everyone. I have never been to a class, per se, but I learned theory on a piano from a couple of childhood friends of mine that actually teach pedagogy at SFA. When I realized I can't take the keys everywhere, I picked up a guitar about 5 years ago. I quickly realized that I needed all my fingers, and threw away my picks. Maybe if I had the most awesome guitarist in the world for a teacher, I would have tried harder. No use living in regret, though, when you find peace in music.

It was a rock super bowl and the plane crashed two days before the concert. They replaced Ozzy with Pat Travers. I remember I was too distraught to have any fun! Also foreigner was the headline and UFO and an unknown guy named Brian Adams was the opener.

It's believed that Randy went on the plane for 2 reason's, to take the pictures for his mother (Delores, which the accoustic song on Blizzard of Ozz called "Dee" is for) and to comfort Rachel. I always believed that Randy tried to take the wheel of the plane to stop the entire plane from hitting the bus, after hearing what you said, and educated guess, Randy saved everyone on the ground and Acocks wife by grabbing the wheel and most likely trying to move the plane. No matter what, a legend was lost on March 19th 1982, and a lovely woman in Rachel Youngblood. I was 10yrs old and had just discovered Randy Rhoads, I begged my mother to take me to see Randy, she finally caved and bought tickets for a show in June of 1982😢 I saw Brad Gillis play guitar, but remember seeing a lot of signs made by fans for Randy, 1 saying "God Bless Randy Rhoads" and 1 that I will never forget, said "Randy Lives in all of us now"

I _loved_ Randy and just _had_ to show him how much by getting on some guy's shoulders right in front of Randy and...well.."showed him" just as he launched into "Crazy Train" solo! He seemed to enjoy the view! LOL I was a bit of a wild child. I'll never forget him or that night. This video gave me so much respect for this KZbin channel. Aside from The Day The Music Died this tragedy has been one I've always wondered about being a fan of Randy Rhoads. No one could analyze this video the way this channel and everyone involved did. Being a bass player Randy not only influenced me but inspired me simply because he was an average guy who loved music and teaching music. He wasn't a guy looking to become famous. He only wanted to teach music and show the world that you don't have to immatate someone to become something. May everyone involved in the crash R.I.P

Some other comments I've read here echoed some of the same theories about the crash that I've heard as well. I also read somewhere, I can't remember where, that the night before or sometime that week the band as well as Andrew Aycock had watched the WWII movie Midway on the bus, and watching the aerial combat scenes may have inspired Aycock to try and fly that Bonanza like it was a fighter plane. Who knows. He definitely had no business behind the controls of an airplane.

Interestingly, the bus that plane wing almost cut in half was returned to the builder in Brownsville Texas and repaired and put back on the road. This was shared with me by a driver that was working on the Prince 1999 tour. Florida Coach, as it was called, had leased several tour busses to the Prince Tour. Well done review of Randy Rhoads. I went to the auditions in Dallas, TX after Randy’s death and am so glad I never made it through that process. I also am a PPL ASEL, I passed my check ride 7 years later in ‘89. The thing about Randy that always stuck out in my mind is that on tour wherever they were he would go to the local music store and take a lesson, probably ending up teaching, from a local teacher. Based on my experiences as a professional musician working for big name artists, I can tell you it is a very different lifestyle that I am glad I walked away from. Others think it is living the dream, but one man’s dream is another man’s nightmare. Good job on the review.

I saw Ozzy in Boulder Colorado on 10 Jan 1982, while I was stationed at Lowry AFB, CO for technical training, early in my USAF career. This incident happened shortly after I arrived at my permanent duty station. According to the local radio station in Denver, Ozzy's stage and gear were snowed in, in Cheyenne, Wyoming, on the way from SLC, Utah from the previous show, the day before. Not a good idea to schedule a tour in the Rocky Mountains in January. They had to rent gear and played on a bare stage but still a great show!

the autopsy is extremely graphic but clearly indicates, due to this tragic event - that Randall William Rhoads knew he was going to die, but moreover was intensely grabbing SOMETHING upon impact. Ive learned that fate is CRUEL sometimes and he didnt deserve the pain that he suffered, and once i read it 4 or 5 times i cried so damned hard....propably similar to how Oz did in that church, so i guess ill say this: Before Aireys photos became "known" back in the early 2000's when the internet took off, i remember reading the autopsy report. This is just a FEW of the many details but i believe tell the story of Randys valour that day....apparently "one body was found atop another, on the rear of a ford granada".... I knew then that the placement of bodies combined with the "plane severing a pine tree, flipping over and exploding upon impact", and the very sad and horrific injuries that Randy had suffered indicated to MY imagination that he and ol cock boy were FIGHTING over the control at the VERY LAST SECOND , perhaps Randy SAW this ass hole fixing to plow that plane into the bus, RANDY leaped upon the murdering coward and grabbed the contol with MAYBE enough time to blink before the aircraft sped crashing through a pine tree "6 feet high" instantly yawing the airframe totally upside down... at this time now with MASSIVE head trauma and a ******** ******* , he was still alive (sadly) then kaboom and this is from the time Don started taking the photos, which propabaly took maybe 10 sec....There is sadly more, but find it and read it yourself, im not telling you where or how to find it. It will change your life forever if you read it and love randy. Randy had emphysema in one lung, no drugs and....well. Thats enough. Pray for him and racheal but Randy especially. For some reason i feel as if he needs our prayers, and desrerves to be saved. Only the living can ask the lord to save a lost soul and from what the 2 significant people ive talked to in detail about him said to me he was JUST A KID, but a good kid. If it was me in his shoes on top of the WORLD like he was dying like that id be mad as f*K and that is a bad way to pass. love you randy please be at peace . AMEN thank you for the inspiring video i hope this offends no one EJ

@RJERRh0ads4everr I was 14 yrs old when the accident happened and could barely remember Randy Rhoads, but found myself going down a rabbit hole today looking up information and videos about his life/music. He was a brilliant musician and it made me feel mad & sad at the same time that someone like him was killed so young due to someone's drug addiction and/or murderous heart. My eyes were welling up w/ tears as I read about Randy, and then I read some good news, and I hope you find some peace with this information I'm sharing as I'm guessing you have not heard/read this about him. Randy's brother said in an interview that Randy was "a fairly devout Lutheran." I've attended a Lutheran church, as well as worked at a Lutheran school, so I know they teach as it's written in the bible that in order for a person to be saved and go to Heaven, they themselves have to make the personal choice to ask God's forgiveness repenting of their sins, and receive Jesus to be their personal savior which is to have a rebirth in their spirit, be born again (John 3:16), so hearing Randy was a Lutheran, then my guess is he repented for his sins, received Christ as savior; therefore, Randy Rhoads left this world and was immediately in the presence of the Lord as the Bible teaches us. While it's still sad that he left this earth so young, it hopefully brings his family/friends/fans comforting peace to know that he's with God. P.S. As a Christian I can not leave without mentioning I guess as a warning to those that believe in praying for the dead... Once a person has died, their eternal destination is confirmed already by the personal choice they made while still alive which is they either repented and were saved by Jesus Christ (choosing eternal salvation w/ God & saved loved ones in heaven), or they rejected the message of the cross (choosing eternal damnation & eternal separation from God & saved loved ones), either way they chose while still alive, praying for a dead person has no bearing on their eternal destination nor is it biblical to believe in the practice of praying for the dead as it was never taught by Jesus nor his disciples within the New Testament. If there is anyone out there reading this message, and you do not know Jesus as your Lord & Savior, please know He loves you and is waiting for you to come to Him in prayer to repent for your sins and accept Him as your personal savior. Don't think you can live like the devil now, and when you die those who love you will pray you into Heaven, that's not reality... you must make the choice yourself before it's too late. But you don't have to take my word on this, read God's word, no where in it does it say a person can be saved after death.

It's very hard to say with any precision what Randy was doing but my guess is that both he and Rachel were scared shitless with the pilot's negligence. Even if the pilot successfully buzzed the tour bus on the first flight at tree top level, that's still quite risky and very little room for error with some of those bank levels. On the second pass with Randy and Rachel, perhaps the pilot intentionally tried to get closer to the bus. At that extreme bank level, there was zero room for error as he could easily lose precious altitude with no time to recover the plane before hitting the ground, let along the bus, etc . One could see Randy trying to get the pilot to correct this, at a minimum, since you don't have to be a pilot yourself to see how aggressive and unwarranted that maneuver is. I'm guessing Randy was doing it for Rachel's sake first and for all of their safety but no sane/sober pilot would be doing that risky of a maneuver for sport and with others lives at stake. Very, very sad.

The Randy Rhoads story is so senseless. Here they are touring by bus...safely make the 11 hour/ 665 mile trip from Knoxville to Orlando...only to still get killed in a plane that was going absolutely no where...just circling over head. What was at risk, what was gained...and what was lost, ...the stupidity is mind boggling.....

And during mass, the Monsignor (head priest) called out my friend Joe who was wearing an Ozzy T-shirt! It was hilarious watching JJ get scolded! I never knew the details of Randy Rhodes plane crash, so thank you. I remember hearing about it, I was 13 at the time. On a side note, I've seen Ozzy live, sans Randy and it was a good show. In later years, when I knew who Randy was, I tried to go to the site (as a pilgrimage of sorts) and could only get to front of the property as there was a fence. RIP Randy, he was so much more than a rock guitarist, as he was classically trained. Amazing talent. Such a shame he was killed so young. I love playing the riffs in Crazy Train etc but for me it's always a work in progress, most of Randy's work is for me as he was so gifted. I don't think I've ever listened to a "satanic" rock band per se, they're probably out there, but Sabbath and other similar bands sang about bad experiences/people, that's not the same as devil worshiping. I digress. Ozzy and Sharon then went on to treat other guitarists pretty badly after Randy's death - according to legend. I read that the pilot had taken cocaine and was bleary eyed to say the least. He wasn't current, the aircraft wasn't checked out, it was stolen as you say he wasn't fit to drive a bus? An accident waiting to happen in the air💔☹️☹️ Cocaine is bad news to keep drivers alive, in WWII both sides' personnel used "uppers", I'm not advocating such as they were bad news too, but better than cocaine, tragic negligence on several fronts that snuffed out three lives💔☹️ I've worked with functioning cocaine users it's often hard to spot a user. You can also ask (in the UK) to see the aircraft records too, to make sure that aircraft is safe as well👍💜

What an eloquent, well researched, and thoughtful summary. Clearly Aycock had no business controlling anything. He couldn’t even control himself. Any speculation about what happened in the cockpit though is merely speculation. Yes, Sharon is responsible but the times must be considered. Cocaine was thought to be non-addictive and mostly harmless in those days. With that, Osbourne bears responsibility too for his lack of control, IMO. VERY sad. Rhoades was a better person. I was a huge Ozzy / Black Sabbath fan in the day - still am! I'll never forget hearing the guitar work on Crazy Train. Goosebump city! I also remember seeing the Diary of a Madman album on display in the local store the week it was released. Mom wouldn't buy it for me, HAHAHA! I was 8 years old, lol! Secular MA, so I was born and raised on this stuff, and didn't "wake up" so to speak, until decades later. Anyway, I've always wondered the details of this crash since it was the talk of the school when it happened. I knew the pilot had done coke not long prior to the flight, and that they were buzzing Ozzy's bus. I had thought it happened at Ozzy's house in England for years until just recently. You presented quite a bit of info I wasn't aware of. I didn't know of the other flights, and some of the people involved. This was always such a sad one to me, since Randy had been a fan of Ozzy, and had just scored the gig of a lifetime playing alongside him. He was so young and full of potential! I often wonder what we have missed out on musically over the past 4 decades. It would've been epic. Excellent explanation, Dan! Much appreciated! In the late 70s i had a friend at the local airport whose father was a famous aviator. His father spun in and burned in a tiny Luscomb airplane and his kid (my friend) inherited about 3 hangers full of classic aircraft. This guy was I think about 17 at the time but had been flying since he could reach the controls. I had a student license myself. Anyway one day we decided to take his fathers old V35A Bonanza out for a flight. There was a plateau outside of town that was flat and covered with tall grass. We buzzed the grass (later found grass stains on the prop). and when we came over a hill there was an oil rig RIGHT THERE. He stood that little Bonanza on its wing and I still remember looking out and seeing all the 'O-Faces' on the rig as we missed it by feet. The only thing that saved us was he had it wound up pretty hard so we had a lot of energy and was able to do the maneuver without stalling. Later we got a big laugh out of it but I never heard if anyone reported him to the FAA or not. He did get away with a lot of things because his dad was very well respected.

I actually have a small section of the port side wing from this very aircraft. (N567LT). That was obtained from my dad’s cousin who lived in St. Petersburg, FL. I was very young then. After the on-site crash investigation, the plane was cut into several sections and loaded aboard four flatbed trucks to go to St. Augustine for scrapping. My dad’s cousin worked in real estate and was aware of the news surrounding the accident, so he took a few pieces of the plane and sent them to my dad to give to my older brothers thinking they would find it interesting. My brothers didn’t care about what was junk and it just sat in the garage in boxes. Upon moving I found one piece of it, determined to be from the port side wing. I haven’t found the other pieces we had so maybe they were discarded long ago.

@@TakingOff If you look and I didn't think about the fact that the airplane you showed wasn't the one that crashed, so I didn't think about that, but I saw the big silver shaft coming out of the center of the instrument pannel and that is how the A-35 V-tail my brother flew some years ago was and I dont know if they made a V-tail with two yokes but I suspect they did. Seems like there is some kind of knob on the end of the shaft that you twist and then flop the yoke over to the other to the side then lock it. It's been a long time ago. I remember asking my brother how you would ever have a right seat pilot; he just smiled and flopped it over to my side. Of course we were still on the ground going through the check list when he did it. One of the common possibilities is the right seat person getting freeked out scared and grabbing the yoke and overpowering the pilot and if it was a double yoke and that close to the ground there was no time to react especiallly if they were yellow line or above.Thanks for the nice piece I really enjoyed it. A good piece of history. It is amazing how many artists have been taken out that way.

@@bruceweight7319 yeah it’s called a “throw over” yoke. Maybe half had the single and half the double. I’ve flown a V tail with the double controls.

It is interesting to learn about this stuff. My brother says most v tails had the throw over yoke but they sold kits to convert them to a dual yoke. They are very different to ride in compared to a Cessna 180 or something with a high wing.

I wish that everyone would stop calling this incident an accident. It was completely avoidable. A terrible loss none the less.

Thanks for this. RR has always been a huge influence on my playing, as with countless others. His blending of classical melody and harmony with the power of heavy metal forged a new standard in rock. Btw very nice and sincere presentation. We are similar age and have religious upbringings but I definitely had a fascination with that music so it almost makes me laugh to hear you say you were so unacquainted with his music. You did a respectful service to a genuine talent in the midst of an ocean of “sin” lol. And for those of us who only ever knew of vague reports of a plane crash, it’s nice to know the details. Still sad all these years later though. That rock and roll lifestyle claimed it’s share of victims Well done

That's horrible to think that the guy wanted to crash the plane in order to kill the girl...and Randy realizing he had to try to take control of the plane but they still crashed. 😔😔😔

Wow, that was a very enlightening report. It's all such a shame what happened. Sometimes I wonder if God took Randy so he didn't become perverted by Ozzy and the rock culture. Who knows? Being a guitar player, guitar builder, and a private pilot, and a HUGE fan of Randy's guitar work, this story really intrigued me. Especially what Rudy said about Randy possibly fighting over the controls. We may never really know what happened. All I know is that Randy was one of the greats of our time, and loved his mother Deloris dearly. They were very close. May they both rest in peace.

Oh yeah, being dead at 25 is definitely better because even though Randy was a sober & level-headed young man, he would have surely become a rock n roll pervert had he lived a full life. Would that have been God's thinking, I wonder? Did He forget about free will?

great video man.. We can only imagine what Randy would have achieved had he lived and achieved his musical degree coming back and becoming the Beethoven / Mozart of rock n roll...

Ozzy deeply loved Randy, and became depressed for many years after. To this day Ozzy finds it difficult speaking about Randy

He also punched Randy in the face for wanting to quit, not long before the accident. Don’t buy the Sharon narrative-Ozzy was a difficult person at times and wasn’t aways the greatest to people. I’m not saying he didn’t love Randy…he clearly did. But his manic behaviour also helped drive Randy away. He had handed in his notice, was going to do one more album and a tour to support it, and then leave the band. Ozzy didn’t like that and they argued-and fought.
