Santa Special trains are in operation on the preserved railways. How about capturing one of them instead? Steam on the main line is a spectacular sight to see, I wholly agree. But to me, nothing could possibly be more magical than a steam-hauled Santa Special on a heritage railway. What's more, you can take your time without having to rush about everywhere.

Hilarious, with a Japanese "Azuma" preceding the Black 5 ! And how many realise the irony of Japanese designed trains running in Britain. It was Richard & Robert Trevithick, grandsons of the man who built the Worlds first steam railway locomotive in Helston Cornwall in 1803, that introduced railways to the Japanese in 1872 ! They were the Japanese Government Railways first Mechanical & Civil Engineers.
