One of the best videos regarding painting that I've seen, thanks! Going to look into color theory for sure. Love the idea of ultra marine blue and burnt number to make a gray!

@@markdmaker3173 I taught carving and painting at our Community College. It has been awhile since I painted a Chickadee. I bought the legs and feet and mount them on barbwire coming off a piece of fence post. It's a wedding gift for this weekend. Better get busy. Thanks again.

Thanks for your great videos on bird carving. I noticed in this video the book of Chickadee reference material on your table and I am curious to know what book that is. Thanks again for your very useful tips on caring and painting.

Thanks for your question and your encouraging comments. The book I’m using is called carving and painting black capped chickadee with Ernest Muehlmatt. He is a three time Ward world championship winner.

Great job! I've never used multiple coats of paints before but for some of the tougher areas that's a really good idea. That's one of the primary reasons I've always liked to use my airbrush to paint my carvings due to the way airbrush paints normally have to be thinned out. I've watched your videos and multiple others and it's interesting to see what type power tools, burrs, burning tips, etc.. everybody uses. It seems everyone has there own preferences.

Shawn Meloche Great question and observations. On my larger birds, I will use an airbrush after my initial coat of Gesso to lay in the shadows in the valleys of the carving. I also enjoy watching other carvers. Everyone has their own style and techniques. Even the top professionals are extremely different in their approach.

color theory is so incredibly necessary no matter what you love to paint. Its also very easy to understand and use. If you buy cadmium yellow, cadmium red and cadmium blue (the primary colors) just start mixing and experiment and make your own color chart to help it stick in your mind :) add Sienna and burnt umber and play with those, adding white and or black. Never use paints straight out of the tube or your work will look flat. Happy art making, from an art teacher of 25 years and a professional artist :)

Mark what do you use for a finish on your birds? Thank you so much for posting this, huge help
@markdmaker31734 жыл бұрын
The acrylic paint once it dries is all it needs. You can lightly missed a UV protectant made by Krylon over top of the work, just don’t spray on too heavy. Thanks for your question. I appreciate it.

Hi Mark. I wish you would do an American Goldfinch painting video.

I carved and painted an American goldfinch before KZbin ever came around. I will see if I can find the pattern and do one.

Hey Mark, what was that whitish paint you used before the black and blue paint?
@markdmaker31734 жыл бұрын
I always use gesso instead of a white paint. It has a very natural look for whitish colors on birds. Thanks for your question.

Mark, will you or do you provide a complete materials list for this beautiful project.
@markdmaker31734 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question. I appreciate it. One of the easiest ways to get all the supplies you want to make a bird carving is to buy a kit that comes with the feet the eyes and the blank already cut out. It’s also one of the least expensive ways to do it.
