I made my ducting out of cardboard then transferred it to aluminum. Works great. I call it CAD (cardboard aided design).

He didn't say he called it CAD first. Hackaday and MotoIQ used the term in different articles years ago, and honestly, there's probably some disgruntled machinist cleaning off his bridgeport somewhere that used the term 50 years ago.

The day prior to the Dyno visit is nerve-wracking....but worth it. Just think positive, a lot of the engines which blow up on the Dyno are either because of pushing the limits (because you're a risk taker) or from poor workmanship. You put quality time and parts into this so you did it right. Even if something happens it's not on you, you tried and also helped out the global Miata community as well if not better than how my other love, Honda products are documented. Good luck tomorrow, but you won't need it. It's hp/tq # time

Remove the shrouding in the mouth of the grill on the sides of the intercooler, this is eliminating air that would otherwise travel past the intercooler and through the radiator. Duct along the sides of both ic and rad, pretend they are one unit, maximizing air through both. Without proper hood venting, (listed below) you are just pressurizing the engine bay with stagnant hot air. Are you using any antifreeze? maybe try a lower percentage concentration. 100% distilled water cools the best, but will obviously destroy parts if you park in freezing weather. What temp is megasquirt turning the fans on? Try turning them on at a lower temp, and turning them off at 30mph. What fans are you using? Dual shrouded oem fans or shrouded SPAL fans are the only quality options. What radiator are you using? 949 supermiata crossflow or Trackspeed dual core are the ONLY effective radiators for our cars. (unless you have a full custom tube frame race car) Did you use the 99-00 headgasket with your vvt engine? this is necessary with the coolant reroute. (also dont use the spring they include with the m-tuned reroute) Doyou have R theory or Singular hood vents? These are the only vents on the market that work for a stock bodied miata. Thats all I can think of, man, hope that helps.
@Krautastic7 жыл бұрын
I have a civic half radiator on my 227whp miata and I have no cooling issues. Coolant reroute and ducted. I also don't have an obnoxiously large intercooler in front of it. I have an obnoxiously large intercooler *next* to it. But what you're saying is the normally accepted truth on these cars.

Hey Greg. If cooling continues to be an issue, I suggest that you first of all get a thermostat with a larger and wider opening (like the superstat), to have as much flow as possible. Another, and a bit more involving mod would be to install a ball valve on the heater core, as the coolant running through that never sees the radiator, and just get hotter and hotter, and just runs back to the water pump inlet (as I'm sure you know). It does not heat anything as such, but it wastes important flow for nothing. If you install a ball valve, then it's important to not close it completely, to maintain a little flow, as the coolant could boil, because it's heated by the manifold/turbo. Best solution would be a mini reroute of that return, to run shy of the turbo. If you do that, you can shut the ball valve completely to the heater core, as long as you remember to hack off the bleeder on the thermostat like you did in this video, to have some flow past the thermostat to help it open at the right temp. P.S love the build and your channel.

Awesome video. I had mishimoto fans on my S2000 and they are crap in terms of airflow. Especially when you stick an intercooler core in front of them. When i supercharged my car i changed the intank filter for the same reason you did. I cant see the point of a fancy fuel system if you leave a knackered fuel filter in their restricting flow. Hope it goes well on the dyno!

Dont take it personally but I hate the fact that people drill a hole to piping that has strength of 1 or 2 millimeters and then proceed to make "threads" into it and then "securing" it with some rtv. Remember that the pipe is also curved so the hole is not even. Regards the man that has seen so many leaking turbo oil returns when the tuner boi figured out that he cant mig weld the oil pan because its not steel.

Miatas are notorious for overheating stock, and he has a big ass turbo now. Pretty standard even with his upgrades
@4839727 жыл бұрын
ncsugray90 he has re-route , older models headgasket , big radiator 2 fans... And she heats up without boost... How stock is thwt to you?
@NGWrenchin7 жыл бұрын
I didn't say he was stock. I said stock cars have overheating problems and his is producing/retaining quite a bit more heat than a stock car, even when not in boost, so its not surprising he is having overheating issues even with his upgrades. Its why lots of people chose to engine swap Miatas if they are going to be hardcore track cars rather than boosting them. His ducting will certainly help but he will likely need to go with hood louvers as well. Not shitting on his car by any means, its an incredible build, and I am super jealous. This channel is part of the reason I bought my Miata and I plan to use a lot of his tips when I turbo it eventually
@4839727 жыл бұрын
well .. i got no re'route , 87C thermostat , 1 fan , mishimoto radiator , 12 psi of boost .. and she runs always at 88-90 ... when pushing her hard she goes to 95-97 ... never seen 100C ... and most important :) ... I never turn on the heater ... this is why I was finding weird the thing that Greg's build was overheating..
@NGWrenchin7 жыл бұрын
What are the ambient temps in your area? That would have a pretty big affect on how well the car can cool itself
@swat12297 жыл бұрын
But Greg isn’t that sensor gonna be a restriction limiting your maximum horsepower capabilities???? Nah I’m just kidding. Love the cardboard, idc if you do track days with it if it works.
@martin0511997 жыл бұрын
you where asking why not do it in cardboard well maybe the cardboard will take fire ?
@testacorsa17 жыл бұрын
It's just coolant and inlet air temperatures that the cardboard will see, and not exhaust or turbo. It should be fine :)
