Carman your special horizontal hive with the copper top was so fun to build. Your ideals shows how much you love your bees by knowing what you and your bees wanted. So nice to get to meet you and your husband!!!!

Nice design and they look well constructed. If I may suggest, do a little more research into venting the top. Just insulate them. Don't vent. It will cause condensation in the winter. Tom Seeley talks about this in a few videos. Houses have insulation right against the ceiling for a reason.
@horizontalbees3 жыл бұрын
Ross you and Tom Seeley are 100% right about the ventilation!! Honey bees in a tree don’t need vents because the tree keep them cool and warm. My hives are built like the roof of your house with vents, because the bees are keep in direct sun light.There are no vents in the ceiling of the hive allowing air to flow out the roof. The only hives that needs some help is the super horizontal hive and in my instructions call for the inner covers to bee seal . With a horizontal hive there is little condensation above the bees because the bees are right against the inner covers as they work them self across the hive during winter. In a layen the frames are larger and can cause some condensation but with a vertical hive the honey sets right above the the bees until they move to the top of the hive causing them to get wet sometimes. Only people that care about bee would give this kind advice and I thank so much for your help. God bless you my bee friend.
@rossmillard98043 жыл бұрын
@@horizontalbees Your understanding of roof physics is a little off. Roofs have vents to create a breeze in the summer and allow the hot air to escape. The hot air is there because there is an UNinsulated air space under a black asphalt roof. Under that air space is insulation. The fluffy stuff on the floor of your attic. Don't think of your hive roof as the roof of a house, think of it as a wall. Exterior siding, insulation, then interior sheathing. Right now your top is an attic with no insulation in it. If you get rid of the vents and add insulation, the bees will have an easier time regulating the temp in the hive. Summer and winter. (Less condensation in winter too) Bee hives are white to reflect the sun so they don't absorb the heat. If you increase the overhang on the roof, it will prevent the sun from hitting the hive when it is hottest and directly overhead in the summer. The silver roof flashing is great for reflecting the suns rays/heat. I know I'm being critical here. And to be clear to anyone reading this. These hives look really well built and a lot of thought has gone into them. Your bees would be lucky to live in one. Love what you are doing!! Keep experimenting and coming up with good ideas.

Great video! Thanks for taking the time to share. I love the different versions of your horizontal hives. My only regret in my horizontal hives was the decision to put the divider board inside and keep two separate colonies in the same long box, each with their own entrance. I thought that it was a dandy idea at first, but I soon realized how fast the bees build comb and were filling up their half of the box. I will most likely pull one colony out of each hive and place them in their own separate longhive in the spring.

Nice design and features on these hives that look very well built. I am not sure that the Super Horizontal Hive would be able to keep driving rain out as it must surely trickle down in between the three sections of roof, but maybe if you live in an area where it does not rain persistently like here in the UK, it might work very well.
@horizontalbees3 жыл бұрын
That is a good observation on this super horizontal hive, and the fear I had when it was designed. That is why there is a small bead of wax between each section to help with the water to repel from this seam and the toggles to pull it tight. Now, so far in the last 3 months with our snow and rain there has been no leaks but like you said this isn't the UK. So keep watching this year and lets see if I need to make a design change. I don't mind saying I was wrong and finding a new solution to this problem. Thanks for watching!!
@_J.F_3 жыл бұрын
@@horizontalbees I was thinking maybe use a rubber sealing strip like the ones some people have under the bottom of their exterior doors, or maybe even a piece of flashing either side of the centre lid, that would then have to be opened first and closed last to make it work. Either way new ideas are always great and taking it that step further and actually building them definitely earns you my respect. Wishing you the best of luck with your design and builds, and may I say that the custom hive in your latest video looks absolutely stunning.

Hurricane Harvey destroyed my house and I lost everything except what I evacuated with - which wasn't a lot. Right after that I lost my wife so I just bought a camper and put it on my land and live in it. But replacing the most needed things here has kept me broke financially and I still have more "needs" before I start buying "wants". A thousand dollars to me right now, is like a million or more lol.

My ex, a young Ukrainian woman, broke me financially and I had prepared years for my retirement and had a very substantial nest egg. But her foolishness broke me. Then hurricane Harvey wiped me out lol. I'm too old and too crippled (from spinal cord damage thanks to a very drunk driver) to go back to work. During this scamdemic I've lost 2 of my 3 incomes, so I'm hurting financially. In March 2021 I have to get my truck inspected and for it to pass I will need 4 new tires first. 4:18 mark where you talk about the "step box". I'm confused as to why someone wouldn't just use deep frames for honey collection. Not only do you get more honey per frame - but when you're done, you have deep frames with built-out comb ready to be used in a new hive (or cycle out old comb in this hive). Seriously - I have used traditional Langstroth hives and the first 'honey super' I put on in the spring is always deep box. Yeah, it is ridiculously heavy ; but it's worth it! Also, the queen excluder divider - do you really need that? In topbars, the bees tend to keep all of the brood right in the middle, negating the need for a queen excluder.
@horizontalbees2 жыл бұрын
Hey Chris you have made some great points and questions. The reason for the step is because some extractor will not spin deep frames. My friend wanted one of our horizontal hives (when I stumbled on to this issue)but knew that the deep frames wouldn’t fit in his extractor so this was the only fix to the problem. There are some beekeepers that only use medium frames so we have modified our hives to just fit this size.
@horizontalbees2 жыл бұрын
The queen excluder is not needed for this hive to work. Your statement alone proves that this to be truth. It can be use a tool to help the beekeeper just like a vertical hive. With the flow hive system it keeps the queen out of that area. I use the excluder in a different way to harvest honey than most beekeepers. As you know the queen has full range of the hive and can lay brood on almost every frame. Some frames are mostly honey with little brood so a easy fix is to slide the excluder into that area and wait for the brood to hatch and then harvest the honey.

Thomas that is a very good observation that you made in my video!! Each one of my hives will bee little different in size due to the wood I use (I can't find a piece of straight wood). @@horizontalbees got it. Multiple hives sitting on top of the horizontal hive defeats the purpose of using one. Raises the price out of reach to most bee keepers. Older people or women want the sitting down position behind the hive for a comfortable and back saving experience
@horizontalbees Жыл бұрын
Hey Macy, I completely understand your idea of a siting down and enjoy yourself while working on your bees. That is why my wife and daughter’s chooses these hive to inspect and make me do the few vertical hives we have. This hive doesn’t have to use a super in the middle and can be used as a storage area or even a place to top feed. This design also only takes about 2 1/2 pound of pressure to open the lids which makes it easier on the beekeeper. My favorite thing about horizontal hives is a person can build them to fit there needs. Thanks so much for your great comment and for watching.
