There was a convention recently where Roche’s VA was in. I got the chance to talk to him (I had just finished the section) and he told me that in the script when Cloud says “he is… an asshole” it also says “(Cloud kinda likes Roche)”. I found it so funny and sweet at the same time

You know I had a feeling, I felt that Roche someone so filled with life and energy was going to be used to highlight degradation and how it burns SOLDIERS out, but I never thought he was going to become a sephiroth clone

According to Crisis core, only G-type SOLDIERs degrade. Not S-type. As Project S prevailed over Project G, Roche is supposedly a S-Type SOLDIER who doesn't degrade. If he's suddenly heavily degrading in a super fast way here, it's because of the unknown experiment - including more Jenova's cells that he already got injected when he joined SOLDIER - that Hojo did on him, not because he's a SOLDIER. The black robes are mentally weak people who got injected with Jenova/S cells. It can include G-type SOLDIERs (probably like Broden) who are in the final phase of degradation, and thus lose their original mental strenght, knowing SOLDIERs are selected to be mentally strong to tolerate the mako + Jenova's cells injections while keeping their mental integrity and free will (that's why they do not answer the Reunion and are not under Sephiroth/Jenova influence - at least S-type SOLDIERs, and G-type SOLDIERs who are not yet degrading).

So Roche put it all on the line for one last fight with Cloud, the first one to excite him so much. I give him major props for holding onto his mind for as long as he did. I also like how the jenova cells and experimentation gave him acces to more dark magic like abilities.

Roche knew that he was degrading. He must have already started to feel the effects back in Junon. That must be why he put himself on Hojo's table. Just to get that one last burst of energy so that he could go all out in a fight against Cloud just one last time.

@@FF7-fr No, all SOLDIERs degrade. Even those of Project S. Only Sephiroth cannot degrade because his traits cannot be copied and his cells cannot diffuse, and thus cannot degrade. The rest of the SOLDIERs from Project S are just streamlined versions the project, hence why they’re able to degrade and cannot be made the same way as Sephiroth. The only ones who haven’t degraded are Zack and Cloud. In Cloud’s case, he houses pure S cells. Zack’s an odd one.

@@0axis771 yes because we know President Shinra is trustworthy and tells the truth. lol And Roche is degrading after he went to see Hojo, not before. Or he's a G-type SOLDIER. It's not like in the FF7 compilation there were a lot of people telling lies, gaslighting, or making wrong guesses thinking they're right. The story is full of it, it has always be a thing in the FF7 compilation. Like Sephiroth in CC who thinks and tells Zack classic SOLDIERs are only mako enhanced while he would be created from Jenova (in the Nibelheim reactor scene). While it is stated in OG, CC, AC and Rebirth that all SOLDIERs are all injected with Jenova cells. Like in the Re-trilogy were Cloud really think he's degrading while he's not. He has never been degrading in the Compilation. Like when Dr Sheiran and other characters tells black robes are SOLDIERs degrading. While in OG they are the Nibelheim townpeople survivors recovered by Hojo, not SOLDIERs. And globally every people injected with J cells who are not mentally strong enough to tolerate them, like in ToTP part 3. The report in CC is clear. It's from the scientists working on the Jenova project, writing their observations on the results of Project S and Project G. They observed that G-type SOLDIERs were degrading, while S-type were not. That is exactly why Hojo took the head of the Scientific department, and Hollander fell into disgrace. I mean it's literally the absolute core of Crisis core story ! Have you played it, really ? Edit : and it's not only stated in CC but also in the CC Ultimania : "SOLDIER Degradation A symptom of a particular flaw inherit WITHIN THE G-SERIES SOLDIERs and their copies. It is due to an imperfect integration of Jenova cells into their bodies, and the symptoms worsen as their genetic information is spread to other beings." I just found there is a Final fantasy wiki page specifically about Degradation, quoting he official sources. It will enlighten you about it.

Well, the caped dudes were all discarded at the Northern crater in OG but I wouldn't be surprised if some were shown being saved and liberated from Jenova's influence at the end of part 3. You know, like a scene in the credits showing a few of them still very pale but dressed as humans and recovering in Nibelheim or something.

What's truely terrifying is hie character from the start blended the line between friend and foe. Kind of like Sephiroth with Cloud. This isn't degradation from G or S Cells it's The Reunion either enhanced S Cells or a new one entirely like a forced collective consciousness.

I love how the game is really making degradation a real fear and worry for Cloud. You knew in Remake he was expecting it to happen someday to himself. In this one, he's seeing it hit closer and closer to home as people he knows fall prey to it and become "one of them." I'll bet anything he ends up in black robes himself at one point in part 3.

If I had to guess Roche ending up as a robed man has something to do with him volunteering to be in Hojo's lab in one of the previous cutscenes where I'm pretty sure he got that "SC4" tatoo which likely stands for "Sephiroth Clone 4", Hojo also tried making Sephiroth clones in the OG so I guess this is how it was reimagined in the remake trilogy

Why did he get cellular degradation though? Hair going white and breaking down like Angeal and Genesis? He was given sephiroth cells, same as Cloud and Zack which don't have that side effect.

@Chocobuu1 I think SC stands for Sephiroth/Cloud. I think that because hojo only had a finite number of S-Cells he started using Clouds that make up for it, and since they aren't pure S Cells only that caused the degradation. Plus I think I saw Soldiers Class C at The Temple of the Ancients (within Rebirth).

Been a while since I last played the original game but... If I remember correctly, Cloud was, or rather turned out to be, the only successful Sephiroth clone. All the other Sephiroth clones, SOLDIERS included, turned out to be failures and ended up as these black-robed ones.

At some point, Hojo saw them as failures too, as that was the cause why they were forgotten in the Nibel basement lab. Until one day Zack, being the strongest (as he had prior SOLDIER enhancements) woke up and freed himself and Cloud. Hojo is so oblivious to Cloud (as he saw him as another failure) that it took a while for him to recognize Cloud when he saw him in the Shinra building.

This was a sad one for me. I liked Roche from the beginning as it was very clear and obvious that he was doing all he could to help us. SPOILERS: Considering he was created through the SC, he was essentially Cloud's son or brother at the very least so his kinship with Cloud and his (persona) death after warning Cloud/trying to protect him one last time was all the more heart breaking. He is officially part of the team in my head canon along with Cissnei.

I think it’s easier if you counter and black his attacks and follow up with an atb command on block. It makes for a cleaner fight. But also, it’s cool that he is pressured for the second phase. It makes for an easy win, but makes sense with the story because he’s already degrading and no where near 100%. Literally on the final stretch.

This was something complety diffrent. Geostigma. Sephiroth's Mind that was still in the Lifestream infected the Lifestream that saved the Planet, when Midgar got destroyed in the End. This has nothing to do with degradation. Btw what happend here neither. Hojo pretty sure gave him Jenova Cells. Only G Type Soilders like Angel or Genesis can degreading like in Crisis Core.
