Time heals some wounds, but not for others. I didn't feel like myself for quite some time after my divorce. I could've kept in touch with my ex, but I chose not to because I thought that would only prolong my attachment to a toxic person. I've moved on with my life, but I still feel that pain from time to time. It's been 9 years (too long), and I'm convinced that some pain just won't go away, that the best I can do is to cope with it. Trust me, I've had long-term relationships prior to my marriage, lost mom & dad and a brother, but the pain from this divorce just refuses to leave. Time has softened it to where I could tolerate it. Yes,, I completely can relate to Dexter's seemingly unending sadness.

what devastates me is the scene prior when Dex takes a sharp intake of breath as Sylvie commends him on how far he's come on in a year. He no longer wearing his wedding ring may give the illusion to his friends/family that he's doing okay, but we, the audience, know that's not the case as we see in this scene that Dex's coping/surviving is by drinking heavily still and regularly talking to Emma's spirit in this way. Heartbreaking 💔😥

I feel like this scene was meant to replace the final scene in the movie when we are given a flashback to when Dexter and Emma met for the first time and they separate for the first time. When they tell each other they will meet again, even though they don’t know for sure if the other will call, when they share that kiss, and Emma is the first to walk away, but Dexter just stands there watching her leave for a bit before he leaves too. That scene was so heartbreaking, and yet so symbolic representing both the beginning and ending of their story, and uplifting because they didn’t realize yet how long and deeply they would love each other, how quickly it would end, and that they will meet again. I kind of hated that they didn’t include it.
