Carom billiards (or Straight rail, the basic game) was probably invented by the french. It was after all known as The French Game in the early days. But 3 cushion was oddly enough most likely invented in the US. It is certain that Wayman Crow McCreery from St Louis, Missouri popularised the game. There is at least one publication that categorically states that he invented the game as well

These guys are great, but after watching some of the "classic" matches, I have to say it's refreshing to see players that don't consistently score like 8 point per inning.
