Berserker Adrenaline & Rune Legacy Theory | Final Fantasy 7 Remake

VIKING NORSE LORE ALERT! Buckle up all you mythology junkies as this theory will be diving deep into the cultural references scattered throughout Final Fantasy 7 & the Remake. This is part 1 of a series where I'm going to address where Cloud Strife derives his power from. Where does power in general come from in the universe of FF7 and how it gets harnessed. Be sure to stay to the end of this theory because... damn I blew my own mind. The story of how the buster sword could be acting as a runic enchantment akin to a classic Final Fantasy Rune Knight. A power that allowed Cloud to do the impossible, defeating Sephiroth at the Nibelheim flashback. I didn't even realise the significance of Cloud's association with berserker abilities until late late into making this theory. His association with the wolf, the classic overhead rage jump attacks we see Cloud do throughout the game. The use of shamanic plant enhancements and how mental illness plays its role in the great placebo of Cloud believing he was in SOLDIER. While this vid does contain spoilers for FF7 Remake, this is a theory that mainly explores themes still relevant to OG Final Fantasy 7. Thanks again to Mike Gallagher for sending me a copy of his Norse themes that inspires FF7. While much of the association and connection I make (like the story of Baldur, Freya, Nibelheim and Berserker cultures) were my own ideas. Reading his work certainly inspired my brain.

Not just Cloud's blue eyes and blond hair, it if you look at his mom's outfit, his house and the village they lived in, it has a lot of Bavarian/Danish/Norvegian culture. So, yeah, he can have these roots. :) Damn vikings. ))

funny enough. "fog-home" in German. "Nibel" is an old-fashioned way to pronounce "Nebel", the German word for "fog", but can also be translated as "cloud" resulting in "cloud home"

I remember finding out about Cloud's job classes and geeking out super hard. You can see the remnants of them just in his playstyle. He goes berserk with that humorously large sword, but his limit breaks are fueled by some kind of mystic energy. Blade beam? It ain't the blade that causes it. He can do it with any blade. Meteorain? Also, Tifa's gloves have a ton of runes etched into them! It makes me wonder about Zangan's training. Also, she's also from Nibelheim, so she could also have this kind of power, of course Cloud is still a very special case. The fact he's also blonde and blue-eyed could also be a symbol of the Norse background. That is a good point...that maybe Mako gives him some kind of power, even though it messes him up, pure lifestream could have some godly power on Cloud. Ohhhh and I had a thought, what if materia replaces the idea of actual individual runes? Physical things that enhance someone's power...hmmmm

I wanted to catch this live, alas I was at work. But yeah, I've gotten into so many arguments online about how Cloud throwing Sephiroth actually ISN'T impossible given the laws of FFVII. And I, too, have brought up the concept of Limit Breaks. And I always get shot down with, "That's just a game mechanic!" No! No, it is not! Because it happens outside of gameplay! Tifa can harness her spiritual energy to fuckin' punch better--WITHOUT THE USE OF MATERIA--and people really be wiggin' out that Cloud can yeet Sephiroth. And when I bring up Cloud's eyes in Last Order and the scene in BC I'm equally dismissed. Because, apparently, when a story constantly points out that something is UP with one of its characters that NO ONE in that universe can explain that means IT MEANS NOTHING. That's how writing works, right? You stick a Chekov's Gun in there and then never fire it, right? Jesus Christ, people. Sidenote: Can we talk about how in, I believe, the original cut of Advent Children, when Sephiroth has Cloud pinned through the shoulder to a piece of debris and says the line about taking away what he cherishes most, the camera zooms in hella fast on Cloud's face and, in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it coupla frames, Cloud's eyes become slitted and he rips that sword out of his shoulder and goes After Sephiroth? Because people don't think that meant anything, either. Because zoom-ins on characters' faces are just things that happen for no storytelling reasons at all.

dude I couldnt agree more. I don't see why people are so strict to what they believe the 'correct' narrative of FF7 to be. Its a compilation that has been built, interpreted, adapted and new versions of made repeatedly. Its clear when even the directors have different views on whether ALL OF HUMANITY DIED, they are pretty broad on the thought processes behind this game. I get frustrated at how desperate people seem to be to conform the big pool of thought processes present in FF7, to their single (and often childhood nostalgiacally simple) idea of the game.

I do believe that it’s adrenaline rush, aside from the possibility that Cloud is also somewhat special considering that he’s one of the few people who can received Sephiroth’s Genova gene, that makes Cloud suddenly becomes what Sephiroth was seeing as impossible. Scientifically, human have limit set by their own body for survival, and the limit is usually signed by pain. Something like when you’re continuously running, at certain point you got the feeling of pain from your kidney, that’s basically your body saying you have to stop running and take a rest for a while. When you hit a wall, with your hands, if your body works normally it will hurt...that pain receptor is there as a limiter for your survival. Even hunger is a form of limit your body used to tell you that you need to eat to survive. What adrenaline does to people, is making them break their own body limit. When you’re chased by angry dogs, the adrenaline will make you felt much less kidney pain than normal. Another example, when i’m really pissed off, i usually punched a wall like i’m punching a pillow...no pulling, no hesitation, and no pain felt until my anger subsided. There are also times when i just throw my school desk with one hand like i’m throwing a book, to a friend...when my anger subside, the school desk is not nearly as light because i’m not muscular to begin with. That’s what adrenaline does, break people’s limit. I think Cloud throwing Sephiroth scene is essentially also a nod to the limit break system of the game FF7. The anger of being unable to protect his village, mother, and childhood crush Tifa, pushes him into berserk mode with adrenaline rushes through his body making him do beyond his own limit...a limit break.

There are a ton of uncanny similarities between Cloud and Vincent, particularly with the berserker mode as well. And yet there are stark contrasts as well (for example Marlene fears Cloud but naturally likes Vincent). Would be cool to see a comparison of these two sometime as well. The Berserker concept for Cloud makes the most sense when it comes to his power source. You might say Vincent is only a small example of what Cloud could become if he were to embrace his dark berserker side-- thoroughly drawing into the power that Sephiroth teases so much about becoming stronger. Part 2 of Cloud is aggro as fuck. He charges Sephroth with level 1 Shinra Guard skills with zero hesitation. In Advent children's final arc, Cloud "chases" Kadaj, Yahoo, and Loz as they try to flee him and fail to do so. 1 vs 3 and Cloud dominates! When Sephiroth shows up, Cloud may be scared but he fights him head-on anyway. FF7 Remake final fight. Sephiroth floats down and Cloud says "Let's finish this" and CLOUD jumps and attacks Sephiroth FIRST despite all the fear and PSTD he showed during the game.

I don't really have any information supporting the idea as I don't really know ff7 lore all that well. However it has always seemed to me that Cloud is a very good candidate to be another descendent of the Cetra. Only not the healing Cetra that Aerith is a part of but one of their warrior families. And we do know that the Cetra had to have warriors. After all a people will not last long without them and the Goddess lady is covered in armor. As for why no one talks about the Cetra warriors? Well they seem to have a very fairy tale view of the Cetra. In most fairy tales you don't talk about the good rulers having an army and they don't give details about the wars that happen off screen. In fact ff7 does this with the Cetra. The Cetra fought with Jenova and her army of clone zombies, yet they never say how they fought, how long they fought, or even which ones of them fought. There is also the fact that Cloud, Marlene and maybe Vincent are the only people other then Aerith that seem to see ghosts or "talk to the planet" in the later games. So even though Cloud is by far the most deaf to the planet in the main game he becomes connected to it in a way that no one but a Cetra or a Weapon can be. And honestly his deafness has always felt like a door to something he has but he closed because it was to painful to pay attention to. I am not sure if this is true but I also heard once that Cloud has the best magic stat after Aerith as well. So yeah I think that it is very likely that Cloud is a Cetra descendent form one of there warrior lines.

Cloud story is like the nordic to greek myth of argonaut the boy who desire to become a hero. Cloud limit break his own limitation is like the argonaut strong desire to be a hero that even when the odds are against him his powers multiply.

This point is really important because cloud manages to summon strength when he mists needs it and I didn’t piece that together until you brought it up. Now I’m no longer mad that at the end of FF7R that he was able to cut a train in half, as well as cement blocks, when hours earlier we had to move trains to get through the train graveyard. So thank you, things make sense again. Idk why yet, but I know it’s not a plot hole and that was important to me.

Speaking of the inspirations this game takes from Nordic myth, I wonder if there's going to be a lot more parallels from there with the Cetra moving forward in the Remake games. Sephiroth's suizid in "Last Order" makes more sense if he is a representation of S. Freud's Death drive (He got the black wing of Thanatos anyway), but like Darth Vader he is in Death denial also even more so he refuse to die... what is Slavoj Zizek's ultimat form of the Death drive. But Sephiroth is more greek mythology with "King Öpidus", blinded by a deathly Ideology/Mania (Ödipus blindes himself) and he goes crazy and it is also knowlege which cause his downfall and the whole Mother thing.

President Shinra, of course. He has a few illegitimate children, and he and Cloud have the same colour hair and are similar in stature. If you look at Shinra's depiction in the Remake (he's a lot slimmer than in the original FFVII), it's easy to imagine him looking like Cloud when he was a young man. This would make Cloud and Rufus half-brothers, which is an interesting idea. Note how in the ending scene, the moment after Cloud's final conversation with Sephiroth where he stares into the distance is juxtaposed with Rufus doing the same thing. The camera angle is almost identical, which seems to be hinting at a connection between the two characters.

PART 1 . nice job. Questions to answer: I never even wouldve considered the nordic story. Berserker cloud, it all makes sense. Looking forward to a new video . You've done well. I still think exploring clouds childhood and birth in the midst of the Jenova and the protomateria should be absolutely considered- maybe the protomaterias function as a function to purify and designate righteousness/weapons in the world for the guardian role of protection and preparing for ragnarok- meteor-- jenova--- omega weapon... and WEISS??? Weis is so important I just KNOW he is. Cloud and Zack the brothers stemmed from the yggdrasil contrived to confront Loki/Sephiroth the planet usurper. Why sephiroth wants to NOW befriend cloud and use his strength......???? Sephiroth doesnt embody any legacy other than a twisted cetra/jenova role , and unconsciously begins to mimic the sefirot et'ada unification within the livestream, using jenovas unifying will .... maybe sephiroth is trying to embody clouds legacy ? Cloud is a regular human potentially chosen by the planet to be a hero nurtured in bushido efforts done by zack... sephiroth is a super soldier who discovers his attachment to alien meta-force, what could he want in the remake?? What has changed so drastically from the original and how does Deepground , vincent valentine, minerva, zack and this new sephiroth and a different cloud strife could all be catering towards in the remake.... also WUTAI... the underdog of the remake story so far working behind the scenes? ..... and genesis.. the pseudo puppeteer of Deepground, Jenova and Zacks legacy working for Minerva. Could genesis have usurped some natural order within the thresholds of Minervas planetary defence weapons amok the lifeestream? Interesting.

Dude you are so touching on points im excited to bring up in upcoming videos, but wow! That point on Seph needs a legacy, or is somehow trying to find a way to 'tap into' the lineage of heroes attached to Cloud. That would include Sephs old buddys! I think Genesis even says in Crisis core that Zack carries both Angeal and parts of Seph with him. So they were all 'reunited' in the moment Zack fights Genesis, thats what Genesis said. The idea that Seph is limited in the number of Sefirots he can transcend through is huge, in fact you could say he is hard limited unless he can access it through Cloud. Also ideas on the planet, minerva, purity and the entire plot behind proto materia is so juicy. I think the transition between righteous judgement and true loving alturism is so key. You could argue the purity of love is what these characters are seeking. Genesis with Minerva. Seph with Jenova. They are both seeking 'mothers' and found no love returned by either. Thats why Aerith becoming the new lifestream goddess makes sense. Why Aerith was called mum all through AC, including by Kadaj who is accepted into the stream by Aerith and he emotionally has his moment of feeling the acceptance of a true mothers love. I could waffle for days but I love the thoughts your putting out here!

The idea of love is such a good idea because truly genesis and sephiroth have been so scientifically tunnel vision in their upbringings that they are searching for some kind of equivalent feeling of satisfaction they possibly genetically cant even feel- so they resort to other planetary callings that allow them to make believe they can transcend beyond those kindred human spirit/feelings. Zack is a pillar that connects Aerith, Angeal, Cloud, Genesis and Sephiroth all together. If Cloud is the symbolic nordic wolf of Valhalla and embodies who's legacy!?!? That's right the Puppy! The bushido puppy of honor and dreams who is tested by Minerva himself in battle. Cloud definitely takes Zacks legacy further, and even embodies a full scale wolf/dog later, prowling in contemplation on the scent of ( reunion) ??? The point you made how Angeal and Zack simultaneously rekindled the old ways of cetra, caring and speaking to the planet. And much definitely, cloud could be always speaking to the planet-- even when he thinks its himself, or somebody else or sephiroth. It's all so juicy for sure. I could keep writing on and on. But it's been a pleasure to explore this a little more and see what you come up with in the next videos! Kupoo!

i think another thing that could be mentioned in reguards to the protomateria and jenova is unbeknownst to cloud and tifa the nibelhiem reactor prior to the inccident had jenova indide it and was leaking terrorcorrupt hence why the protomateria was found in lucrecias cave beside the neibelhiem mountains vincent was slumbering in the shinra mansion so in theory you could say that growing up especially when tifa climbed the mountain and cloud followed her, they were exposwd to higher levels of mako and terror corrupt then they would have in town from their drinking water which prolly came feom lucrecias cave which had terrorcorrupt in it, and even then they brought that materia to the shinra mansion for study, i find it hard to believe that after it was seemingly abandoned no villegars explored the place, thats probably why there are monsters in the building because those are the failed experiements of hojos seph clone 3xperiment post incident but yeah im sure curious visitors must have tried to enter the mansion prior to everything, hell could even infer that tifas father may have been a construction worker which built the very fojndation which makes it fitting that he is ended by the very abomination that was created from it. anyways the parralels are there waiting to be explored especially with what remake teased with a much bigger pov of the town (im sure rocket town will also be just as big, hell maybe the fuel for the rocket actually comes from the corrupted mako of the nibelhiem reactor) interesting things to pondor which i dont think anyone has discussed however i am almost certain im not the first person to come to this conclusion

@@FinalFantasyPeasant i really like your theories and i think i may have missed a recent one about yuffie being a killer i cant remember but i look forward to part 2, and hopefully you read my above comment to help fuel upcoming videos i do think there is some merrit/exploration needed there. how vincent, grimore, hojo, gast, lucrecia, hollander genesis angeal lizzard, sephiroth, cloud and the villagers of nibelhiem all come into play, hell perhaps in remake part 2 we will even encounter zangif to unlock a limit break for tifa, he tests her to see how far she has come and if she is ready for the fight ahead, similar to how dyne will test barret, hojo vincent, sephiroth/genesisi/zach cloud etc

From Cloud I got more the Dark Knight vibs with PTSD and depression in AC and the black cloth (like Soldier 1st Class is the Waffen SS of their univers), but the class of DRK goes also to Sephiroth and he became a very dark Knight, after Nibelheim. But Cloud's rage attacts, like he is possessed by Ares, qualify's him to have the class -> Berserker or like Anikan Skywalker and Kylo Ren to have a Borderline P. disorder.

A wrote up a fanfiction in which, similarly to Lucrecia having been the mother of Sephiroth as well as Hollander's wife being Angeal's mother and having lent her DNA to Genesis, that there was a third scientist (possibly Gast) who experimented with Jenova's cells on a male who via Cloud's unnamed mother sired a non-psychotic warrior of growth on par with Bell from Dungeon anime (who the hell writes the whole thing?)

Which I agree with that, this isn't a Cloud only title like FF15 was for Noct. FF to me has always been about a group of great characters from all walks of life coming together for a cause. But stuff like this doesn't need explaining imo, it exists in the backdrop and arguably thats what makes it so cool to explore

@@FinalFantasyPeasant thats why i like theory building, i find many people see the new story as a way to kill the mystery of old ff7 but to me old ff7 is its own world, people think the whispers are the reason characters made the choices they did back then and takes agency away but if they payed attention they'd know the whispers were never in the old game because they had no need to, events were playing out as the planet wanted but because sephiroth knows that now he's messing with events and causing the whispers to act, people just want to be mad because they dont want to think just consume and think when the game makes me question things its homework, you dont need to understand the whispers to have a fun time with remake my cousin has only played 13 and beat 7r before i did and loved it but when i told him about some theories he was like oh shit i didnt realize that, man beat the game in 30 hours and was content but upon learning more he replayed it again, i think thats the experience th3 devs wanted

Well, no. Normal Shinra minion level soldiers, which Cloud was a part of at that point, doesn’t get the Mako enhancement yet. They only give Mako enhancement to SOLDIER members. They only give Cloud the Mako enhancement plus the Sephiroth’s Genova cell that power him up, after he managed to throw Sephiroth to the lifestream. So, the Cloud that throw throw Sephiroth off during Crisis Core, is the normal human soldier Cloud. There is a probablity that he’s somewhat already strengthened by a bit of lifestream energy though, considering he’s born and raised in Nifleheim where a Shinra facility is present. There is also the possibility that something happens that give him more potential, when he falls the cliff trying to save Tifa during his childhood.

My grandfather's family goes back to a viking Earl here, so we have always been very into our old religion. I have been on lectures with experts who agree that Freyja and Frigg were two seperate godesses. It was speculated earlier that they were the same, but it's been debunked. @@FinalFantasyPeasant Well Zack beat the shit out of Sephiroth, weakening him severely. Then Cloud picks up Zack's Buster Sword, sneaks up on Sephiroth and stabs him in the chest. He beats Cloud and Cloud is thrown out of the chamber. After seeing Tifa and Zack telling him to finish off Sephiroth. Cloud jumps back in to finish him off and Sephiroth barely held that attack and throws Cloud to the floor. Then Sephiroth stabs Cloud while he's on the floor and lifts him. Sephiroth by that point has a giant buster sword shaped hole in his chest and is not only loosing a lot of blood, but is very weak. Cloud, being pierced by a small Katana hole, lifts up Sephiroth and throws him in the reactor. Key thing, Zack beat Sephiroth, Cloud stabs Sephiroth with the Buster Sword, Sephiroth is weakened and defeated.

@@FinalFantasyPeasant Does Cloud have Berserk Adrenaline. It is a possibility. However, it never gets translated into the game play. In Remake, in the first bike scene, Cloud Jumps from his bike to slash Soldier Rosh bike. So it's obvious that Cloud is not your typical low ranking Soldier by any means. His skills and even his jump when exiting the first blown up Mako Reactor. That's not something your typical low ranking Soldier can do. In can be the Mako inside of Cloud. I think that's why Aerith is much attracted to Cloud. Given how she is a Centra.
