One of my favorite moments from Dissidia NT's story mode was how the heroes wouldn't let Squall go off on his own at the beginning of the game, but Cloud got to wander off no questions asked. "He can handle himself, but we're not letting you get away with your brooding loner B.S."

I'd say Cloud's limit breaks are a separate ability as his resilience harkens back to the old school Desperation Attacks but more as a status effect than an attack.

Limit Breaks can also be affected by emotions, like being afflicted with Fury raises the rate of the limit gauge being filled compared to being afflicted with Sadness (less fill rate)

@@Toadaboticus Yah, comparable to a status effect, i see it as a mental state that allows him to execute super human moves depending on how the state is achieved. Which then in turn, Allows him to do Desperation attacks or special moves depending on his mental state. This ultimately means that no all limit break moves are desperation attacks since the state can be achieved outside of moments of desperation.

@@Toadaboticus Oh yah, another thing i wanted to add that i just thought of is the how its visually represented. The life Stream is depicted as "Green" energy connected to water but another kind of energy visually shown is the spirit. As persons, Aura/Spirit/Ambitions or resolve in media is often see as White, Gold or Blue aura. My research show that they all represent the same thing but at different potency "Gold> Blue> White" is the traditional visual cue but the order can change depending on the lore. Which we can see form around Cloud right before he execute a Limit Break in the AC movies. This also makes me think of the other forgot film "Final Fantasy Spirits Within"

Cloud Strife has been my favorite fictional character since I was 12 years old. After playing FFXVI, Clive may now be the protagonist I most identify with, but Remake and Rebirth did an amazing job of making Cloud relatable.

Well said, I feel the same way. Cloud is fantastic and will always be the benchmark for fictional heroes in my mind. But it's amazing how well developed and executed Clive is in FF16. That game is a masterpiece in its own right.

The title doesn't match what this video was actually about. All this was a brief retelling of the FF7 story focusing on Cloud. Wasn't a bad video but the title had me thinking there would actually be talking about Cloud's power in some sort of quantitative way. I'm kind of confused what the aim of this video was.

There's really no exact way to quantify it, since we aren't ever given any actual numbers for things, and a lot of the stuff presented in the games/movies would be completely physics-defying to the point of being nonsensical (i.e. moving between his swords in the air, at a practically non-changing elevation, during this fight with Sephiroth in Advent Children; jumping multiple meters into the air, etc.). Attempting to quantify stuff like that would give you numbers that are just way out of whack compared to any sort of "normal" strength assessment. That being said, at the end there is a sort of answer to the question posed: in his base state, he's as strong as the best-of-the-best modified humans in the world from the SOLDIER program. You could, theoretically, use some data from beyond this movie for real-life Buster Sword replicas to try and figure out how strong he would need to be to wield such a weapon as he does in the media. Doing so would be somewhat difficult, as using such a real-life weapon in the "proper" manner as Cloud does would be virtually impossible for all but *maybe* the strongest humans. Even at a "low" weight of only 20-30 pounds that some people have calculated, the sheer size of the weapon would be incredibly difficult to use exactly as Cloud does, with only your wrists as the fulcrum. Most peoples' arms/wrists/elbows/shoulders would either break or be easily dislocated by the motions.

@@AeriFyrein So TLDR: "It's hard." C'mon now ofc it's not easy thing to quantify. Ofc FF7 has Anime levels of nonsensical-ness. I've seen plenty of super hero and anime "who is the strongest" videos that quantify and qualify a person's strength and ability. This is not a new concept, and this video at best glossed over a couple key points to qualify feats of strength, but didn't even do any real comparison to other feats to rank where Cloud actually stands or make any argument. Again all I'm saying the title of the video did not match the contents of the video. I didn't dislike the video, I just felt confused because the title gave an expectation that was not met imo. Not a bad video, just mismatched title.

@@LPcrazy_88 That's not quite what I was saying, no. Rather than just "it's hard," it's more of there are two sets of "numbers" that you would get, which would make things pointless. You'd get values for the "normal" stuff, which would be your typical fantasy-ish super powered character numbers. Way stronger than would be "realistic," but still within the realm of "I could imagine a super solder doing that in a fantasy setting." But then you have stuff that is literally physics-breaking. Things that it wouldn't matter how "strong" a character was, because it simply wouldn't ever be possible within the setting. Cloud performing an Omnislash on the ground and being super fast and strong? Sure. I can imagine his muscles being strong enough to make him able to move at super speeds for a short time. Cloud doing the same thing *in the air* without dropping, with nothing to push off of as he's moving around/stopping/moving again? People can't fly in this world (even if they can jump really stupid high), this type of "power" is just nonsensical. There is no way you could effectively quantify this sort of thing in relation to others. I'm not saying the title of the video is perfect, and I too was hoping more of a "real" answer, but after having watched the video, I kinda realized that's not really something that would work very well.

@@AeriFyrein So I hear what you're saying, but it doesn't matter how ridiculous things done in the game and supplemental lore are because everything can be put into scale by comparison. This is the basis of any super-hero or anime video I've seen when someone tries to rank other heroes/anime characters. Especially when they are trying to compare multiversal beings or literal planet sized beings. The way any sort of video I've seen done is either with actual quantitative numbers like DBZ's power level, or simply with categories. But even without DBZ power levels you can still quantify things (like you said) how high someone has seen jumping, or how fast they can move. You can talk about how Barret or Cloud has been seen moving giant steel plates, cars, or even yeah how big the Buster Sword is and what physical strength Cloud would need to wield it like he does. You then can get into qualitative comparisons of feats of strength. Talking about things like how Cloud survived a fall from hundreds of feet in the air during the bombing of Sector 5, or things like Aerith being able to wield the power of the lifestream and talk to the planet. Aerith's final limit break Great Gospel can bring people back from the dead and make people invincible for a short time. Cosmo Memory from Red XIII looks like it's harnessing the power of a supernova. It's not an easy task, the hardest decision imo is choosing which mediums to try and compare or draw from. Deciding whether you compare the more grounded Remake vs the anime insanity of the original game. But the main thing is comparisons need to happen to bring things into scale. No comparisons were even made in this video, so how can you say he's strong or weak when no comparisons were made.

Theory time: Cloud is strong because as a resident of Nibelheim he grew up best to a natural Materia Spring like how Zack grew up in Gongaga near a Mako heavy Jungle. Strength outside of Jenova cells. It's not Jenova that makes the soldiers strong. It's all the mako. Jenova quickly grants it's power to anyone infected that serves it's purpose. In those moments where Cloud fights Sephiroth where he is slicing buildings in half it's Cloud fighting for the Lion's Share of Jenova's power absorbed by the lifestream. Probably why Hojo put her between 8 reactors. What makes Cloud win is when he isn't relying on Jenova and Sephiroth's taunts but when he channels his own strength and by extension the planetwide mako/memories that were earned not stolen.

To add to this fun bit of theory crafting, perhaps when Tifa and Cloud fell off the bridge when they were children perhaps this is when he absorbed some of that mako life spring goodness. Who knows, corrupt companies always leak their toxic junk into nearby water sources. I doubt this is the case but it's fun to speculate about.

We must remember that the only materia that Cloud possessed was: Pre-Emptive. I believe this is the reason why Cloud was able to sneak up on Sephiroth; delivering that: “fatal stab wound” in: 8:30.

I enjoyed this video, but this video was more about his lore and less about how strong he is exactly. Id like to see a video of you measuring how powerful characters are by there feats, stats, etc. Of course in this case, we dont have a definitive answer for Cloud yet because the final remake game has not been made so he still may display something really incredible by the end of it.

I don't know if the channel still exists, but there was one that did death matches against fictional characters as chosen by the viewers and before the match, they laid out the strengths and weaknesses of each character. They didn't always nail it, in my opinion, but I enjoyed getting a rough estimate of what a character is capable of. This said, they clearly were math and science nerds, and not everyone can or even wants to know how many joules it takes to, I dunno, cut through a sky scraper sized meteor, like Cloud and Sephiroth have done with ease 😅

Thanks so much for the comment! It's a tough one for sure, as Square Enix seldom releases any lore-based stats. It's why we tried to focus as much on feats as possible (as you suggested). To that end, there are 4-5 specific lore-based feats Cloud performs that are mentioned throughout the video as a way of trying to quantify his strength relative to other characters in-universe. It's a challenging topic though, for sure, as Final Fantasy is often based on the actions of parties, as opposed to individuals. ~Darryl

What about the fall from reactor 5? Crisis Core said the plates in Midgar are 300 meters high; 25m is fatal IRL, even if you acknowledge the flower bed; 60m makes water act like concrete. Cloud just dusts himself off and does some parkour with barrow throwing.

Questionable in the original but it was latter made canon that Zack survived the same fall. So being able to survive a fall like that seems to be a result of the SOLDIER process. Now the bridge collapse from his childhood where he only got a skinned knee that raises some questions. Given the same incident put Tifa into a multi week coma.

@@Force-MultiplierI don't believe that's what they said. I believe what they said is part 3 will incorporate elements of Advent Children. I think old Sephiroth is going down for good this time by the time the entire remake sage is wrapped up. I don't think he'll be coming back with his stupid kids or his stupid space cancer. Just my opinion and own theory, but I think this Remake story takes place after Advent Children and the rest of the compilation. Time will tell.

@@SickSoundingStuffok if they didn't say "it will lead up to Advent Children" what did they say? as for your theory that's partially right because Kadaj Loz and Yazoo are already in the first RE game but that doesn't mean that things won't end the same and then the Advent Children characters will be the definitive versions of their strength because it will be an event after whatever happens here unless they said differently this will be the case for anyone other than Vincent because the rest didn't get any meaningful fights portrayed in Dirge of Cerberus

@@Force-Multiplier I mean there is an interview with the Devs and translations from the Ultamania where they say they will be incorporating elements from the entire FF7 compilation, including things from Advent Children. I'm not going to do your research for you but it's out there if you'd to fact check me. To my mind it wouldn't make sense to incorporate elements from future events into a new story, which is clearly a sequel at this point, that is still unfolding. Anyways, I picked my words carefully as to not upset the overly sensitive amongst the fandom. I started off by saying, "I believe..." I could be wrong. Just sharing what I've heard after watching hours of content on my Favorite Video Game Compilation.

@7:50 it was mentioned that Cloud is physically strong enough to wield the Buster Sword - being too heavy to wield for the average person. But there have been points in the Remake trilogy where it has seemingly retconned its supposed heaviness. At certain points in Remake + Rebirth, cutscenes have shown Cloud placing down the Buster Sword akin to a large unbrella before resting in beds, benches, etc. Especially playing Queen's Blood matches, Cloud places his sword in an unbrella holder (lmao). However, this point I made can be dismissed as it mainly pertains to non gameplay nor story-based elements. And with that, there is also little direct comparison of strength of other people vs. Cloud or Zack when it comes to holding the Buster Sword, except for one sequence in Rebirth's Junon parade where a Shinra infantry trooper handed Cloud his sword with ONE HAND and completely horizontal - like holding a stick sideways. But he's only holding the sword, it can be argued that combat is more taxing and requires more-than-average trained muscles. This has lead me to believe that the sword itself is not that terribly heavy (instead it's rather light and sturdy), or that Shinra troopers have amazing wrist strength.

I would argue that it's like some construction equipment, that it's not particularily heavy, but the more you use it, the heavier it feels, even though the weight hasn't really changed at all. Though never explicitly said in lore how heavy is the Buster Sword, it has been implied that is at least as heavy as a regular Soldier's sword (or maybe just a little heavier), just sturdier and resistant, since Soldier's swords were easily broken with heavy hits or constant aga spells directed to the blade, while the Buster Sword has never been broken, it technically was still usable even after being around 2 years in the open field exposed to the elements.

Based on real-life replicas and calculations done, the Buster Sword could weigh as "little" as 20-30 pounds. While this is still incredibly heavy for a sword - most larger 2-handed swords in history were still only around the 4-5 pound mark - it wouldn't be nearly heavy enough to just outright destroy stuff if it was leaned against them. Even at double that, it could be leaned against most things just fine. It would also not be heavy enough that someone (such as a generic Shinra trooper) couldn't lift and hand it over, though they'd likely do so with some difficulty. The real problem with a weapon like the Buster Sword isn't it's weight by itself, but rather that weight *combined* with it's size. Since you would have only your wrists as a fulcrum, a blade that long and heavy would *feel* significantly heavier to use. Virtually anyone trying to use it as Cloud does would have their arms broken/tear apart from the stresses. There would definitely be ways it *could* be wielded by an "average" fit person - just *not* the way that Cloud does. You'd have to rely a lot more on momentum and spinning strikes, rather than just swinging it like a sword of a normal standard size.

Well, as far as I can tell, it hasn't been revealed what Angeal's father forged the Buster Sword out of. Is it steel, mithril, adamantite, plasteel, vibranium, carbon fiber, dragon bone, jacobini rock, or some other mythical material? And how does Gaia's gravity and atmosphere stack up against Earth's? Also, we are talking about a world where RPGs and high velocity tickle-bullets do less harm than a backhanded slap. Anywho, we just don't have a lot of solid data to make a good guess.

What I love about cloud is he always had the potential to be bad ass but shinra never gave him a chance to realize that potential and it took a mental reconstruction of his identity for him to gain the confidence to show what he is capable of lol.

Aerith and Cloud are both manifestations of the Lifestream / Planet. Aerith is the peaceful aspect of it, Cloud is the "Say What Again" aspect of it. That is why the two of them are tied.

Actually, wasn't the earliest instance of Cloud displaying freakishly abnormal physical abilities back when he saved Tifa when they were kids? Y'y'kniw. The fall that should've killed them both, but he managed to protect her from the worst of it while he himself kinda just... weirdly shrugged it off? Or at least, I can't remember anyone mention Cloud being as huet as Tifa was. I just remember him being blamed for getting her hurt when he tried to save her after her punk ass friends dipped on her. Point is, he was freakishly resilient even as a kid.

This is very intriguing. The idea of a latent power that has yet to be mastered. Even during the Dirge of Cirberus. It could state the argument that Cloud's story isn't over. The Sephiroth crisis is the prevention of Reunion. But the result of Reunion is the true awakening of the Calamity. Jenova still exists in the lifestream as well as Sephiroth and Hojo is also still very much alive. Even if the original writers stop working on projects, i believe the story and artwork should be continued creating several conflicts that ultimately lead to the destruction of Jenova and its representatives. This way there's no limit on the efforts to see this huge project to its completion.

I think the reason why Cloud is seemingly so strong even before he got Mako infusion and S-Gene injected into him, is because he's just that kind of character. Just like how Zack is so superior to most other SOLDIERs despite not having injected with S-Gene or G-Gene. He even beat Genesis and Angeal who are G-Gene receiver. It's just the kind of character he is. As for the reason why Cloud managed to kill Sephiroth during the Nibleheim incident in Crisis Core, it's really as simple as Sephiroth being shocked. Cloud at that time was not even a SOLDIER, and just what Sephiroth saw as another normal shock trooper. Plus, Cloud shows that shocking level of strength unbefitting of someone that's not even a SOLDIER, while being stabbed and mid air. That's why Sephiroth says "impossible" when Cloud lift him up with his own sword stabbed on his chest. And instead of doing the logical way of just letting his hand upward following the sword movement, Sephiroth instead trying to wrestle his sword against Cloud. I think Zack and Cloud, and maybe even Tifa and some members of Turks and Avalanche, are simply character that's strong because they're born with that kind of potential within them. Don't forget that some Avalanche members beat SOLDIERs...and members of Turks are arguably also strong enough to beat some SOLDIERs despite not getting Mako injection at all. It can be further assumed that Sephiroth, Genesis, and Angeal are not even the best candidates for Jenova cells after all. Maybe, if it's Cloud or Zack that got direct Jenova cell infusion when they're born, they'd make up even stronger and absolute First Class "child" SOLDIERs.

I just started playing ff13 (an hour in) and found it interesting that the main character “lightning “ has electrical powers and thought if any other character had something special about them linked to their name and I just realized that cloud is well cloud bc his memories are cloudy due to all the mako poisoning

I have a theory that the residents of Nibel have such power already in their blood because they were born on one of the world's greatest concentrations of mako before Shinra came and built there reactor so mako had been in their bloodstream in small quantities throughout their lives

I think when Sephiroth when reincarnated into Kadaj, he was equally as strong if not stronger than his base form. Sephiroth getting his One Winged Angel from basically confirms that he was stronger than his initial base form.

I noticed you made some mistakes or misunderstandings of the lore there. 1. Buster Sword is canonically not that heavy. At least not for normal people of FF7 world. Aerith and Tifa both easily lift it up on separate occasions. Even the boy who help carried over Cloud/Aerith/Tifa gears during Don Corneo mansion did it while carrying all the other's gers at the same time. And no, it's not because "magic" either...most likely it's just either made with material that's not that heavy, or it's just that muscle density of normal people of FF7 world is way higher than people of our real life Earth. You probably mixing up realism into what's canonical in Final Fantasy lore there. So no, Cloud lifting up Buster Sword in itself is not an incredible feat at all. 2. Cloud didn't get "tortured" by Hojo during the time skip after Nibleheim incident. There is nothing in lore that say or imply that Cloud was tortured. His weakness and memory loss is due to severe mako poisoning, plus the S-Gene being injected into his body. While it's never told the reason why Cloud failed to be accepted to become a SOLDIER despite his potential strength, all shown in the lore so far indicate that he can't handle Mako infusion that well, on top of having a relatively weak will personality. Those are two things that's required for all SOLDIER candidates after PO. Of course, you can argue on technicalities, that technically iniecting someone like Cloud with Mako infusion is a form of torture. But I can counter argue that there is no source to say that being injected with Mako infusion is even a painful process to begin with, beyond the needle...it could just as well felt like taking a drug or something.

Clive may beat gods but Bartz and the cast of 5 fight gods, concepts beyond physical constraints and, eventually, Everything and Nothing at once. Worth noting that the cast of 3 and 6 also fight conceptual beings and 12 has the iconic Scathe magick which is opens a portal to infinite energy and isn't even an instakill on enemies. Powerscaling Final Fantasy is a bit of a mess though, i've been into powerscaling and "vs forums" since around 2004 and even a broad consensus on the titles has always been dubious at best. Shout outs to an old forumgoer by the handle of Wade who shilled extra hard for FF6 and had receipts to put FF6 characters as casual lightspeed plus with universal attack potency, I still remember your efforts bro

I'm 5mins in, and there's not really anything actually indicative of "how strong is Cloud" - just walking through events in-game of what he has/hasn't done. Vid's not staying on or even truly touching on subject and isn't FFU's best work at all. Lore doesn't explain strength, that's purely feats and power scaling, not _just_ "what happened through the collection"

I'm more than willing to believe that Hojo wasn't lying when he called Cloud a failed experiment. He was probably experimented on before his birth, but his cells probably didn't display anything extraordinary, so he threw him away, never learning that his true power only awakens when he's stressed.

Considering he has been dosed in mako for prolonged periods of time. Even without the J Cells that get cleansed in AC. He is a monster. Tifa herself who was submerged in Mako is powerful too. Hence why she is the only one who can take Cloud when he pounds her under the Highwind. Lol

I remember when death battle did Cloud vs Link and said Link would win cus he could lift a giant rock and I remember thinking to myself at the time "how does being able to lift a giant rock even compare to cutting apart a concrete building while defying gravity running down it" it was so annoying cus they would anally crunch the numbers on one thing while completely ignoring another, like I dont know the math but im positive cutting cleanly through concrete with a sword requires more force than lifting a giant rock.

IIRC they said they were ignoring Advent Children because it was too anime and would unfairly skew things towards Cloud. They also ignored all the materia Cloud didn't start with because it was optional even though some drop right there in front of you during the plot and Shiva is mandatory. Meanwhile, they said they'd treat Link as a reincarnation that remembers all the games but only stick to one of the official timelines, while giving him access to things from games in different timelines. I also remember them claiming Cloud lost due to being hot headed while referencing getting stabbed by Sephiroth in Advent Children, which was BS on several levels. There were way more problems than just deciding Link's magic gloves made him stronger than Cloud.

DB does weird shit sometimes, like in Natsu vs Ace they said Natsu wins cus of lightning magic he shouldnt have access to and has no elemental advantage over fire lol. It also reminds me of deadliest warrior when they did mafia vs cowboys and said a switchblade was better than a bowie knife because of "conceal-ability" lol

In my opinion, I think Cloud is always capable of these kinds of skills, provided he's on top form. Sephiroth knows this, and therefore always enjoys messing with Cloud - Sephiroth would therefore never write a note saying something along the lines of "Hey Cloud, let's meet up on the Shinra HQ so you can kick my butt again, hope to see you there - Seph."

I think Cloud, as with the Soldier Cells and Jenova Cells, is just as strong as Sephiroth in terms of Physical power and adaptability. But in terms of the magic abilities and supernatural factors, Cloud would be at the level of most of the Turks.

I think this is the first time I've ever seen Cloud described as having a strong mental fortitude lol, the whole point is that he doesn't. Regardless, I hate the interpretation that Cloud is inherently strong or gifted, I think that thematically ruins his character, and I don't think it's accurate. Yes, Cloud is able to do amazing things if you threaten something he truly cares about, like Tifa, but that's not unique to Cloud. The reason A sephiroth can't stand up to it isn't because Cloud is special in that regard, but that Sephiroth is lacking, he simply lacks things he cherishes enough to push himself beyond what he's capable off.

I don't think there's any reason to think Rosso messes with Cloud's established strength. She's a member of Deep Ground so she's got to be equivalent to a SOLDIER. Deep Ground probably judged her the best match for him as I would say she was targeting him to try to remove one of the enemy's strongest fighters. We just really don't see enough of their fight to really make any judgements on strength.
