The benefits from high quality bearings more some come from ease of the same distance, less effort to pitch, easier spool start up, all lead to more accuracy.

So funny I watched this video today. Two days ago I ghetto cleaned the spool bearings in my 2021 Shimano Bantam (basically brand new and only used a couple times) . Stock bearings spun for less than 2 seconds. After cleaning they spun for 9 seconds. The funny part is I had the HedgeHog Air Ceramics in the shopping cart and almost ordered them. I was still contemplating the order until running into this 3 1/2 year old video. You just saved me $50, THANKS!

It was my understanding that the main gains from air bearings was in casting ultralight lures. It would be cool to see if there is any difference between the two when casting lighter weights down to 1/64th.
@Felix-mr1vs6 жыл бұрын
Nice one! Got the same bearings in my 2015 Aldebaran (with a Yumeya BFS spool). Both stock and HH Airs cleaned + lubed with 1 drop of thin oil each. Line was a Daiwa 8 strand PE0.8, 6lb FC leader. With the light lures tested (2.8-7g) I did sense a VERY small increase in casting distance and ease of casting, especially with lures below 5g. Didn't compare any lures heavier than 7g. I think at high RPM, when casting aerodynamik 1/4oz and heavier lures for max distance you don't get any more distance due to more friction caused by the small balls in the bearings. You do get a very small advantage with light lures though, due to the recduced inertia of the small balls, especially when pitching (low RPM of the spool). So it's probably high RPM causing more friction, which then negates any gains in max casting distance. If you run out of tests one day, you could do the same with light lure vs. heavy lure + pitch vs. full blown cast for max distance :D

did you clean the AIR bearings too? Lots of bearings come lubed just to protect them. Also, maybe in the next test, also use a light lure with both sets of bearings, like 1/8 ounce or so. Pitching with both sets of bearings would be interesting too!

Agreed...There can be a significant difference between even the exact same bearings. The "test" lacks control...You can take the most free bearing in the world built to the highest tolerances, an extra drop of lube or heavier weight can make them slower than stock el cheapos

Josho8327 I’ve done the same test in a Abu rocket with nearly same results. For casting....ceramics don’t make a difference. Tournament distance casters that have been around awhile will tell you the same. It’s quality of the bearing and not the material.

If you haven't cleaned those stock bearings in 4 years while kept using them, there're probably some permanent damage inside due to dirt and debris, which can't be fixed by cleaning. They should've run even better in free spin. BTW, nice condiments jar from Walmart! I got the exact same one for bearing soaking. In my experience, ceramic hybrid bearings don't always spin the fastest or the longest, I have some NMB Japanese stainless steel bearings that last almost a minute in free spin when lube dry, super quiet, and they're quite cheap, too. But with SS bearings, you always have to add oil in reality, which slows them down drastically no matter what oil you use. So IMO, that's when ceramic bearing shines, even those cheap Chinese ceramic bearings. They can always run lube dry, which spins pretty well compared to oiled SS bearings. And less hassle in maintenance, you don't need to remind yourself of adding oil.

I ran the air bfs bearings in my 15 aldebaran51. They outcasted my stock cleaned bearings(which need oil because of them being stainless). Throwing down to 1/16oz on a k2 and eventually sold to get the steez ct sv. Again those bfs bearings in the ct sv also outcasted on lighter baits. I’d like to see two pins out and more casting on the metanium. I’ve only ever run 4 pins for skipping 1/2-3/4 oz jigs.
@manifestgtr5 жыл бұрын
This is why the 13 metaniums are such a good deal nowadays. You’re getting top of the line, Japanese made parts....in a super light, comfortable, high performance reel. And if you do your homework, you can get one in really nice condition for under $200. I’m not a huge mod guy. With the 13 metanium, however, there’s one mod that I feel is somewhat “necessary” for long term viability. I swap out the aluminum gears for the brass, curado k gears. Im sure it adds a little weight (I didn’t notice) but it’s worth it to know that you have the beefiest micromod gears available.

Can you run the same test on the scorpion BFS but using up smaller weight? I believe that the scorpion is a mid-level reel, so I'm not too sure about the bearing quality. however, being as they're focused for more bait finesse fishing maybe the smaller bearings will cast a smaller plug further? The scorpion BFS uses 730 size bearings. Thanks again!

That's the thing. Most decent reels have pretty good bearings. When shipped from the manufacturer they are going to be loaded up with oil to help protect while in storage, shipping, and just sitting on the shelf at the store all of which can mean it's a very long period before they are ever cast.

from my experience, ceramics bearing are gud for less effort cast that lead to accuracy in light lures. i'm using both ceramic and stock bearing for different purpose, but prefer stock if wanna go for distance coz more controllable. sometimes i mix the bearing (ceramic on side plate, stock on pinion (better sw resistant) and hybrid for spool tention (coz i think sw would not go in my bearing). the result is im gain more distance on both heavy and light lure. but anyway, there's always pro and con. sure we will always got a different result

@652barry6 жыл бұрын
Trey Harpel obviously you don’t know that when throwing lighter lures not only can you cast more consistently, accurately, and further with spinning. Smh..... stick with what you think you know and watch the video more closely.
@skeeterboy776 жыл бұрын
can you? you sure about that? You own or fished ANY of those BF reels I mentioned? I own 40 JDM reels, 12 of which are Finesse BCs....Im sure you know since those HH air bearings have smaller ball bearings that they are geared towards a finesse app (smaller balls start up with less effort and dont need nearly as much weight to get moving) and not long distance casting, but Im sure you knew that already.. The normal bearings, which have bigger ball bearings are geared towards the all around casting and typically will cast farther. So yes I find using spinning reels for what I need useless. SR do have a place for most people as they have not tried using a quality BF BC..Ive worked on reels for 15 years (customer reels) so I know just a little bit about upgrading bearings and different bearing manufacturers..

There's a little more to cleaning bearings than your video shows - I'm assuming you blew them out with an air gun of some sorts (Rinse and repeat affair), then applied a drop or two of high speed oil... If not, you're not getting the best outcome with the stock bearings. If so, then this comment just serves as a reminder to everyone viewing this that there's a bit more to it (Tons of videos out there on the subject).

Oil is added for a reason, reducing wear on the bearings... Loud bearings are bearings that aren't going to last. ;)

@bassnazi47136 жыл бұрын
For the most part they will hold up, stainless or ceramic as long as you keep them cleaned. The main thing that would wear them out is salt or other debris. They are never gonna see the abuse bearings do in machinery.
@xinyaowang37106 жыл бұрын
People just dont get it, the issue of bearings is not they spin too slow, but they spin too fast, that's why we need breaks to kick in when casting. So premium bearings won't have too much effect on casting distance. But air bearings will affect the trajectory of finesse bait when you do pitching, since they have low momentum to start, and this is very important.
@THEREELTEST6 жыл бұрын
not necessarily. When I tested the Casitas and Curado 70, I was able to go lower on the brakes if I remember

U need to put some oil in so doesn't get friction
@herbertgearing17025 жыл бұрын
I have always thought that absolute distance is a foolish goal for baitcaster performance. You should not run bearings dry, apply a synthetic lightweight oil to your bearings. It will quiet your cast and increase the life of your reel. You should also remember that spool bearings should be treated differently from the other bearings in your reel. Spool bearings don't have to support load in any other direction, so "deep groove" is just extra friction and a lightweight synthetic oil is all that is necessary for lubrication and quieting. However the bearings that support your handle and main gear needs to be supported in multiple directions and will last longer with a heavier lubricant. The spool bearings should be optimized for high speed and one direction of support, the gear /crank bearings are a lower speed application and are under stress from multiple directions therefore would benefit from a heavier oil or even a synthetic grease lubricant. Give it a try and see if you can feel the difference. The entire idea behind something like the concept Z is that worn out and rusted bearings are the main reasons for reels deterioration as they get older. The theory is sound, but the prescribed solution is in my opinion wrong. Bearings are cheap as compared to the price of a new reel, replacing the bearings in your old reels with a quality abec 3 or above lubricated appropriately to their purpose will possibly bring them back from worn out to feeling as good or better than new!

Great video first off.. I was under the impression that the bearing quality of the stock Met and other upper priced Japan made Shimanos are better quality and spin better than the lower priced reel stock bearings. I know my Chronarch MGL has a different quality stock bearing than what comes in my older Curado's, Lews , and other lower mid priced reels. Just saying this may be why the stock are competitive as a Hedge Hog. I have never tried that Hedge Hog but I know the bocas I always swapped made a big difference on my lower priced reels older shimanos. However I dont think think the Bocas would be any advantage over the better quality stock bearings in my Chron MGL which are the same I think as your Met stock bearings (SARB's) ? . I also take my shields off btw on my bocas which to me seemed to make it spin better.

Yep Jimbo, if you watch my original Metanium bearings vid I mention that alot of guys who service reels say that the bearings on the Calais DC dont need an upgrading. And I believe they are the same S ARBs that shimano puts in their high end reels and JDM reels. They have the dark gray look thats immediately noticeable vs the silver SS ones. Quality over quantity!

I remember that one.. I believe the Casitas MGL has them also from your other vids?? I lked your video🤘 you are holding your breath while casting ....not good homes

Even if it was a 10 foot difference, it won’t change anything about your fishing. Nope, not worth ever replacing stock for any aftermarket, unless they are badly worn.

Thanks for confirming what I’ve been telling folks all along. Bearing upgrades on mid to high end reel are worthless.

When you say affordable you said 1-200$. Which you may be able to afford but what about those who can’t. I say try a 40-70$ lews/shakespire combos.

It is stupid to upgrade bearings for high end baitcaster. Seriously.

Tuned out or tricked...you did nothing to improve the actual performance of the reel. More like a cosmetic or bling job.

Stop doing tests with fake products. Did you actually think you were getting high end bearings for under $10?

Like your videos, right up until you add that annoying background sound (“music?”) over your voice, then i have to stop watching because it is too hard to listen to what you're saying. Maybe because my audio comes through my good stereo speakers, but that noise boom da da boom really only boom da da boom detracts from what boom da da boom you're doing da da boom. I've had to stop watching many of your videos because of it.
