Welcome to the Chiefs family bro. 👊🏾 This was a heart warming recap of your trip. Love that you get to introduce your daughter to new things. That jersey looks better on you than that other one you had on the last time. 😅 Interesting fact about Kaizer Chiefs. The club's founder Kaizer Motaung played 2 seasons for the Atlanta Chiefs in 1968. He came back to Joburg in 1970 & started a club that he named after his previous team in Atlanta. Goes without saying anyone from Atlanta coming to Joburg has no choice but to support Chiefs. I'm sorry but I don't make the rules. 🤷🏾

Maaannnn 😮💨 you just blew me away with that brief history lesson! So cool to learn. The only factoid I knew thus far was that the team’s name was the owner’s. Had NO idea whatsoever about his own history as a player (and on U.S. soil, no less) 😱 To think there was a U.S. league soccer team in 1968. 🫣 Also a surprise, as I was not yet born. VERY cool post. 👏🏾👏🏾

We will certainly get around to that. We simply have not had the chance yet. During our first (exploratory) visit back in early ‘22, the Apartheid Museum was shutdown, which I believe was still due to COVID restrictions. We did visit Hector Pieterson though, which was enriching. Learned a lot, and was a nice introduction to the struggle of Black people there. Our subsequent visits there have just been so focused on getting “stuff” done - so that our general business and existence there on the ground whenever there is as stable as possible. We look forward to taking in all that is available to us though when the time is right. 😊

1. Keeping-up appearances only really happens in the clubs. The overwhelming majority of our [urban] social spaces and/or events are chilled, and easy easy spaces for interacting with strangers. Fighting and hollering also rarely occur. But if are acting out, it's rarely a danger to others (eg. stray bullets, stampedes, etc.) 2. Pay days for majority of people here are the 15th, 25th or last day of the month, so retailers are busiest then. Despite our [digital] banking systems being the best in the world, we still have plenty of South Africans who aren't as tech-savvy/have security concerns/use cash-dependent services like mini-bus taxis, etc. That's why you see many of them preferring human interaction with tellers or withdrawing cash.

@thandiedollar4789 Here is what I will say to that (and I do appreciate your shedding light onto it). As we see here in the U.S. people can either choose to open their eyes and recognize the humanity in the next person, or they can choose to live a life in darkness and misery because they harbor unfounded judgment. NONE of us chose to be born into the nations or lives that we were. Particularly those of us of African continental descent on U.S. soil, we certainly had no choice in this matter. A serious mistake that we make as people is defaulting to the idea that the individual somehow represents the mindset, attitudes (and motives) of the “nation”. Unless and until an individual gives me a reason to be skeptical, distrusting, or even resentful of them because of something they have DONE to me, then I extend a certain level of grace to them. Hopefully, we can all work to get better at such things.

The fronting happens, but it’s frowned upon because it’s not part of our culture. Ubuntu is all about humility, the flaunting comes from people who watch a lot of American content and attempt to re-enact it here. But people will roll their eyes at you if you’re flaunt. The default for us is “we are all in this together”. By the way, I thought you were starting a war last time with that Pirates jersey, this time you’re wearing the right jersey. 😅😅
@MelAndMe11 күн бұрын
Interesting post, for the ironic mention of “Ubuntu”, which that is what draws me to the SD jersey more than anything with that emblazoned slogan “UBUNTU-BOTHO”. Yet it causes “war and division”, in the figurative sense. 🤭😏 I appreciate the insight you have provided…and I agree. 💡🤔 I think you have inspired us to do a vid - to speak on those concepts and dynamics in the near future.
@MosesMatsepane11 күн бұрын
@@MelAndMe Excellent, yeah please the topic from an outsider's perspective. We can't perceive it, to us UBUNTU is like water and we are fish. We only notice its impact when we are outside it. Fun fact UBUNTU and BOTHO are the same word in multiple languages, UBUNTU is Zulu/Xhosa/Ndebele/Swati, and BOTHO is Tswana/Pedi/Sotho. The word doesn't have a direct English equivalent, the approximate definition in English according to me is "an intersection of Humility, Humanity and Community". I am because you are.
