Thanks so very much for this video. Went to the Kahler website and ordered the unit which arrived in about a week. Installation was easy and now my Charvel Model 3 stays in tune! The supplied allen wrench, however, did not fit. Luckily I had one here at the house. I e-mailed the company as and FYI to future sales to other customers and I received a thank you response the same day. Thanks again for this vid!

When I got my '86 Model 3 I had to replace the kahler locking nut like this (and my trem was the Kahler US fulcrum, not the JT6), it had sort of grooved out and cracked. I found a NOS AllParts one from ebay, but it doesn't seem like they make them anymore. Stays in tune great now though.
@OferHolan
@OferHolan 2 жыл бұрын
Gotta say, the Kahler behind the lock system is made out of really high quality material, or at least that what it looks like. Forgot to mention it in the video. If you'll need to get a replacement get this one!

Awesome guitar man. Good to hear Brandon had the solution, I've never liked the JT6 setup. I had a model 3 and it had the Floyd blocked off completely and removed the behind the nut locking mechanism, so it only had the regular nut.

@@OferHolan The Original Floyd Rose is a wonderful, wonderful piece of equipment. I have a Dean the previous owner upgraded with an OFR and it's the best bridge I've ever used. I abuse it so much and it NEVER goes out of tune. I might touch the fine tuners once or two a month, and that's probably my intonation more than anything. I can't remember the last time I unlocked the nut and retuned at the headstock - not sure I've even done it this year! You should definitely try one

I really like that String Lock behind the Nut Kahler. I have that on my V220. I found a desecrated with wrong neck 80's Charvel USA (!! I know). I swapped the neck to a Japan Neck Charvel. It is very similar to yours. Ice Blue Color. The Bridge is a Kahler. It had a counterfit, but I switched to a blue Kahler Kolor 2300, and a MIM neck plate. International Chavel 1 Hum Kahler. It has the regular locking nut. It is really nice to see a Charvel "cousin". Jon in California (Redding)

I put a Kahler on my Explorer in 1986 and it has a behind the nut lock. As long as you install it straight and true you should be rocking. 36 years and untold gigs later and it still stays in tune and I beat on it like it owes me money.

So wait, what exact Khaler part is the replacement? Have same dive-tune problem with G and B strngs on my '87 Model 5. ...unpopular opinion: I love the look and feel of my JT6.
@OferHolan
@OferHolan Жыл бұрын
The behind the nut locking system. You can find it on they're website. I can understand what people like about the JT6 but it's just not as reliable due to it being made from cheap metal
@lsu1992
@lsu1992 Жыл бұрын
@OferHolan Right, the nut on mine is the issue, the locking screw thread edge is snagging the B strng and keeping it sharp. Is there only one nut Kahler made? I would think equivalent to an r3, but the locking nut is behind the standard nut, almost on the headstock...like yours?
@OferHolan
@OferHolan Жыл бұрын
Yeah it happens on mine as well, it's a real design flaw. I just recently installed a Floyd nut on a JT6 equipped guitar and swapped the tremolo to a Floyd as well successfully by myself, I'll try to make a video about it soon. Honestly that's the best thing to do in any case, it's such a huge improvement
@lsu1992

@OferHolan So, the only fix I could come up with is to tune the b string flat (and the high e to pitch) then, from behind the locking nut, manually bend the b away from the clamp screw toward the g with an allen wrench (which brings it to pitch) and LOCK IT DOWN while holding the b, fine tune it as needed, and voila! Now I can dive away with no snags. BUT WHAT AN ABSOLUTE PAIN IN THE ASS, BRO!!! ...I found an Allparts chrome Kahler match, with the cutout for the truss rod cover for $26. I will try it, and if a fail, then bye-bye JT6. Maybe a chance to try a Gotoh, since I have OFRs on 2 other guitars, and heard good things about it.

This might be the answer to the problem I'm facing! I'm going to refurbish and modify an old BC Rich Warlock, and I want to get rid of the crappy Strat-style bridge and put an Schaller/FR bridge on it. But I would have to do permanent and difficult modifications to the headstock to fit a proper Schaller/FR locking nut, which if I don't get right I will screw up the neck permanently. But there looks like there's plenty of room to fit this Kahler stringlock, so this might be the perfect solution for me too!

I found stripped Model 6 on reverb recently, picked it up. It has the BtN style like yours. Is the new locking mechanisms that Kahler sells a huge improvement over the original pot metal ones from the 80s??? I've heard the original ones are trash, and they switched to the Floyd style nuts in like '89 or 90'. just wanna know before I do a Floyd nut conversion. (I really don't wanna do it)

Had the exact issue, wow was that frustrating. I as well installed the Kahler nut and corrected the problem, along with a Gotoh 1996t Trem. Only thing I discovered is the screw over the E-B strings clamps down directly on top of the B string. With a tuner attached I pluck the B and watch the tuner go way sharp as I'm screwing it down. So I have to tune the B string considerably flat before I lock the nut and bring it up to pitch as I'm clamping down the screw. Kind of a pain in the ass. Just curious if anyone else has experienced this? It doesn't seem to effect anything as far as tuning stability etc. And beautiful blue 2 by the way, I have the black one and I think I love looking at it as much as playing it...
@OferHolan

Oh you mean the string clamping straight on the screw? Yes it happens to me as well. Didn't really effect tuning stability though. Happy to help!

Sometimes you need a shim under the lock so it’s not putting so much downward pressure: try one! Thin shim from Kahler, helps a lot sometimes with angled headstocks

I've never been a fan of their designs (headstock, body curves) and hardware (Ibanez trems and patents). They seem to always try and be innovative when in fact the classic designs work better in my opinion. But their guitars do play well, it's just not to my taste.
