I've seen majority of 450 and 380 sl with speedo only up to 85 mph I know they drive faster than 85 My 380 SEL speedo is up to 160 mph it doesn't have the 55 markings

When the US govt went to a national 55 mph speed limit in the late 70's, they told automakers to karate an 85 mph max speedometer on US cars. Even though the cars could go way faster than 85 the wizards of smart in the government thought the speedometer would discourage speeding. Brilliant. A 1980 Ferrari 308 US model has an 85 mph speedo.
