Finally Living Up To Its Potential? Ford EcoSport Review

I really like my 2018 EcoSport SE with a little over 18,000 miles it has the 2.0 an 4 wheel drive. I bought it in 2022, an put over10,000 miles on it. I like the way it drives, handles, an rides. I like the side opening rear door, they always talk you making it hard to open if someone parks close behind you I have had hatch backs that open up an they can be blocked to an hard to get open. What really surprised me was it went through water that drowned out my Jeep Wrangler. I like the 4 wheel drive an can’t wait to drive in snow with my new tires on it. 2 things I wish Ford would have had options to get, one is the tire options ( I have (17 inch) so you could a little more off road tires on it. The second is the 2.0 turbo boost engine, had that engine in my 2014 Titanium Escape an could that car move. One more thing a few off road options such as skid plates, an a small lift kit as well as a few more off road options. Again I like it so far.

Excellent review as always, just one thing though. My wife is quite short and she thinks the side opening tailgate is very handy. Saves her overstretching to reach up for the tailgate if it opened vertically. Just a thought.

Just bought the 2016 eco sport titanium and loving it . 1ltr turbo , plenty of boot size cruises nice on the motorway . Although I do find it dose struggle up very steep hills

I've got the EcoSport ST line. Got upgraded same wheels heated seats steering wheel sat nav reversing camera the lot. Very nice feel to the driving position I'm 6ft tall. Love the car but after watching your review of the ford puma st line 155ps I'm thinking of changing over to that. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Videos are very well done and i enjoy watching. the rear door opening is the deal-braker for me. WTF, I am on the market for a new car (small SUV/Crossover) and EVERY SINGLE available option has a different deal-breaker flaw. I am so sad I need to settle on one.

Great review. Considering it's based on a nice looking car, it's an absolute moose. That rear hatch is not a good idea, either. Nor does it seem to be any roomier than the Fiesta that it's based on.

Interesting review. I'm not quite sure when you mention the tyre and wing mirror noise to be honest, I can say it's not an issue on mine ( st line). The engine is great puts a smile on your face, I've done the performance car stuff the large SUV stuff and I have to say this EcoSport is a cracking little car. I traded in a relatively new Audi Q3 for mine and the ford is a better car trust me. If you haven't driven one give it a try you might be pleasantly surprised. Only my opinion ofcourse. As a footnote I would stay away from the diesel engine, diesel is in its last throws in the car world.

Here is Canada. It's mostly teenagers who drives the Ecosport base on what I've seen. My guess is Ford is targeting the young buyers to their brand. We have optional 2.0L Ti-VCT (GDI) www.ford.ca/suvs-crossovers/ecosport/?gnav=header-suvs

It's almost as if Ford looked at the burgeoning B-segment of SUVs and thought "me too"... and outsourced it. I really can't see it selling in numbers unless people really want that blue oval... and the fact the official name is pronounced Echo-Sport is going to confuse people, even if it did come years before the EcoBoost engines. I honestly thought the lady on the ad was pronouncing it wrong to begin with. It seems to have been priced to compete with the SEAT Arona, but that's not going to be a favourable comparison.

Yes, a few others have accused Ford of simply jumping on the bandwagon, and I can sorta see where they are coming from. Ford has made some great cars over the years, but for whatever reason, they haven't been able to get it right in the SUV market. The EcoSport feels compromised, the Kuga isn't bad, but doesn't offer enough to be a class leader, and the Edge just seems too...'American'. I drove the Edge Vignale last year and it seemed too large for UK roads, plus I thought it was too pricey for what it was. Thanks for watching Stephan.

It won't drive like a Fiesta because its a small SUV The fiesta isn't an alternative so why make the comparison if you want a small suv you won't be looking at a fiesta which also lacks rear leg space It's not a Tardis so you get what you get from its size. Bear in mind , importantly its the same entry/ ride hight as a freelander

Hi Bob, thanks for watching, and thanks for the comment. You say it won't drive like a Fiesta, by why not? It's on the same underpinnings, albeit taller. The Puma is also a small SUV and I would argue that DOES drive like a Fiesta.

@CarObsession the puma is more engineered around a fiesta that's just sat on raised suspension with a driving position much nearer to a fiesta, less upright than a Ecosport which is designed more akin to a bigger suv . The puma like many other small suv are more along the lines of small hatch backs raised up than a purpose designed suv with higher sitting position. The Ecosport gets unfair criticism, it drives well has a comfy drive position and is nearer to bigger suvs in these aspects than many of its rivals. But too many reviews compare it to its sister car the fiesta which is really irrelevant if you are wanting a suv type car

I would argue the puma is a crossover. Drive position is more ghat of a smaller hatch back like many of its competitors. Skoda/ seat etc. They have a slightly raised ride hight but sill sit quite low. The drive position is very much hatch back not SUV. I drove them all prior to settling on the Ecosport and they all sit low like saloon. Puma unfortunately looks about as good as a Duke, they hit every branch falling out of the ugly tree.. Huge lower door panels give it a bottom heavy look wigh reduced rear visibility. If you lift a vehicle significantly higher than its parent base the COG goes up significantly changing the whole balance geometry of the vehicle.. Fiesta to Ecosport... so hhe ride subsequently whill change just like significantly loading a vehicle, or adding a full roof box , your moving the COG up or down F1 cars skim the ground Land rover defenders don't One corners fast the other wouldn't even with a huge engine fitted. Fiestas share some similar parts but in fairness they're not the same vehicle. The Ecosport is better at being an SUV than many competitors has, it has the most essential thing, good ride hight and raised sitting position.

The stupid rear door, cheap plastics everywhere, and other little annoying penny pinching short-cuts, such as the blanked off old ignition key hole, put me off this vehicle. I've owned several Fords in the past, but they're getting left behind now, even the likes of Kia can do better interiors in my opinion. Good review though, thanks for sharing.

@@jeanwombwell3943 I'd argue one of the best alternatives lives inside the same family as EcoSport - the Ford Puma. The fact that the EcoSport is still on sale after the arrival of the Puma is somewhat baffling... Thanks for watching.
