+We Wuz Kangz That depends on what you define as "God"-do you mean a conscious entity that's always existed and can influence the universe at will? Because that's the typical belief. Another possibility is that there is no such thing as "non-existence" and something, whether it be an actual being, or just a primordial energy source that the universe and everything else extended from, has always existed. Life and consciousness could literally have stemmed from a larger collective source consisting of the same energy. Literally nothing is "solid" that you think is, everything is just energy packed into different forms.

@@davidoke3909 You are right cos just about everything in this experience we call life is about evolving. Everything in nature is evolving. God would be preventing us from evolving were he/she to do everything for us. And there is a cure for cancer, more than one. High dosage IV Vitamin C, and cannabis oil seems to be working too. I know for a fact that the Vit C is anyway. But they are being suppressed deliberately.

Basically the fact that we know there is no cookie cutter copy of earth, with humans in it and stuff, despite the fact that it's statistically inevitable that there would be, is evidence. Perhaps its a form of faith trumping scientific analysis. You know that earth is the only one of its kind, with humans, cats, dogs, yadda yadda, but the math says there's another one out there, or will be, or has been.

What he is saying is if you rely on randomness through eternity you must believe in the ultimate of absurdity. That there is a planet full of Christian Richard Dawkins molesting children and arguing against atheism. If you believe randomness creates complex systems then given enough time you must believe all the absurdities you can thing of as fact and not debatable. If you believe in a creator it does not have to be that way. He is wrong in his belief that the universe is infinite, but the point still applies for modern atheism who have to believe in an infinite number of universes and consequently and infinite number of absurdities. They believe this because we live in a privileged universe where everything is perfectly tuned for life to exist so there must be others where it is not so otherwise the universe is special and a great argument for it being designed.

Caleb, surprised to see your debate logic so off. It's stupid is not enough to qualify as a valid argument. Give me a reason as Id like to debate this with someone reasonable. Math is something we find flawless, a system and pattern that can't change. It's a complex necessity to our everyday lives. So for this system to be broken in this way, it can be hard to not laugh while also taking in what he says, realizing he might just be right...

We believe. It hasn't been proven it is jsut our best guess, as we know the universe was at a point a finite size, and has been growing at a finite rate. It is possible something caused it to extend to infinity, butt it's just really really unlikely based on what we know. Also I love the name.
@MelkorHimself
@MelkorHimself 8 жыл бұрын
Johnsom Goldsmith A few distinctions: Everything in empirical science is an educated guess. Nothing can be "proven" with 100% certainty as that is only logically possible in mathematics where you know all the conditions from the start. We say the universe is finite because we've observed a finite amount of stuff. We also say the universe is unbounded because we've never observed a limit to its size, and it's continual expansion lends credibility to that.

Ok.... well you didn't really answer the question, all you did was insult me and reiterate what I said. We already know you can be an intellectual and still believe in god; I think Ben Shapiro is one of the smartest and most logical people I've ever come across. What I'm asking, is if you're going to take a hard, logical, and evidence-backed stance regarding all your political issues (which is what all these people I mentioned in my initial comment do), how can you possibly do that to back up your stance on believing there's some divine being in the cosmos pulling all the strings? Because the evidence for religion and theism having any validity is slim to none. I don't know if you just wanted insult me, if you completely missed the point, or both. Regardless, maybe you should think before you comment next time so you can actually contribute something meaningful to the discussion. If thinking proves to be too arduous for you, I suggest keeping silent to prevent further embarrassment on your behalf.

1. The universe probably isn't infinite. 2. "Isn't the universe amazing!", is an argument from incredulity. It's so amazing, some god MUST have made it! Ridiculous. 3. Mind reading unicorns STILL wouldn't be evidence of god. 4. You are describing infinity wrong. Yes, you would have every variation, BUT, you would also have INFINITE TAIL FLIPS IN A ROW. That's what infinity IS. We don't have the ability to understand it, but we can describe what it means using math. 5. Time is meaningless in infinity. Waiting, or not waiting, is irrelevant. All actions are simultaneous and infinitely long. 6. The universe probably isn't infinite and there are finite things that compose this universe as well as "rules" that define what CAN happen in this universe. 7. There is STATISTICAL PROBABILITY given the physics of the universe that LIFE exists elsewhere. It is not reasonable to say, "We know that there is life out there." We don't. We don't know if life exists outside of THIS PLANET. 8. You can't "go" trillions and trillions and trillions and trillions of light years in this universe...that we know of. The most accepted theories suggest that our universe is about 91 billion light years across. (It could be bigger or smaller, we don't know.) 9. I don't know that there isn't a planet of just "me". I can't know that as you stated and I've stated earlier, we don't have the capacity to understand infinity. That being said, this universe likely is not infinite. Every shred of evidence that we have regarding the universe seems to indicate that indeed it is NOT infinite. So, why do you keep saying that? 10. Wait? What? No! If an infinite universe existed, then, YES, a planet of Charlie Chaplins' would exist...everything that COULD exist WOULD exist SIMULTANEOUSLY. But it seems we don't live in an infinite universe, so this point is meaningless pandering. 11. So, this god is infinite, and everything...thus a planet of Charlie Chaplins'...that definitely exists, because we somehow "know" that the universe isn't infinite...that's just...I don't even...wow. 12. So, naturally occurring systems in nature such as free market Capitalism, "Darwinism" (whatever that means - although I suspect you mean evolution), and biological systems prove that some god exists? So, this god is physics? 13. So, the acceptance of evolution, science, and math, is constantly improving our state of being if we just observe the universe and accept the physics of it? I can't argue with that! Still, I don't see how that proves some god exists. 14. We don't want to be immortal, yet the religious, those that BELIEVE in some god, HOPE for ETERNAL LIFE? 15. No. There WAS NO TIME "before" the big bang. Time wasn't a thing. The universe seems to have had a BEGINNING (about 14.5 billion years ago). There was NO "BEFORE" THAT. 16. No. I don't "dig." Love you Gavin. Another entertaining vid. Thanks!

1. I find this hard to believe too, it's just enormous enough to not be able to tell otherwise yet. People used to think the sky was the limit, and before that the sea. 2. The universe is so amazing if you look in the right spots, the majority seems to be an empty vacuum 3. Yip, that would be evidence of mindreading unicorns 4&5. Summed up well 6. Very important, especially if the universe is not infinite. There are fairly clear rules to dictate what is needed to sustain life, and how long it needs to evolve. I find it hard to believe there are alternate Earths out there, but there has to be other lifeforms, even if it is just trees or insects. 7. Yip, we haven't seen life, but it is probable. You didn't see who killed the woman on the floor, but it is likely the man holding the bloody knife. 14. That was a silly thing to say. Along with with letting children die because otherwise life is 'boring', it's a lot more fun when you are alive, else why bother living at all.

That would not be an example of "trolling". If you felt it was disagreeable to you, it would be described as being sarcastic, or disingenuous, or even controversial; or just "disagreeable ". "Trolling" is only accurately applied to commentators on forum or the forum of a video like this, where the "troll" is outrightly attacking the video's narrative, using expletives, and just being crudely and obviously disingenuous. You're welcome!

@snowangel7980
@snowangel7980 8 жыл бұрын
The latest theories of physics look to disprove the Big Bang theory, stating that quantum mechanics and general relativity fail at singularity. If the Universe was not born from a single point of signularity, and you experiemtn further with Bohmian laws of physics, you wind up proving that the universe is infinitely old. And if we know that the universe is constantly expanding, then this leads to the theoretical conclusion that the universe must therefore be either infinitely large or continuously expanding, which, over an infinite amount of time once more makes it infinite.
@joaquinlanderretche
@joaquinlanderretche 8 жыл бұрын
The thing is that even by the current understanding of the Universe, it is not "infinite" as Gavin uses the word in this video. The thing is that it can contain infinite possibilities but it is impossible for all of them to become a reality. The Universe seems to be expanding constantly as you said, but this expansion is not related to the creation of new matter and energy. What is happening is the existing matter and energy are distancing from eachother and/or going trough entropic processes. Thermodinamics doom the Universe to inevitably become a place where matter and energy are too homogeneously distributed to allow for chemical or physical interaction, so it is impossible for all pssibilities to become a reality.

planets (and indeed galaxies and stars) didn't exist in the early universe. they came into existence a finite amount of time ago. therefore, they can't be infinite. we know this because we measure the red shift of ancient galaxies and we know how old they are, and they get fewer the older the universe is. that's how me ""know" things - we study them. try reading occasionally. and i don't mean reading youtube comments. Well...the known universe is certainly not infinite, but past it? We honestly don't know. The Big Bang is a popular but not conclusive explanation. There are also some quirks that Hawking and whatnot have found about black holes that seemingly break the Law of Conservation of Information. That all goes away if the universe is infinite though. I view the existence of God as congruent with the Continuum Hypothesis. In order to say that it's true, we have to make a logical leap that doesn't make sense. However, if we reject it as false, then basic behavior of numbers such as counting fall apart right from under you. Georg Cantor went legitimately crazy trying to understand the Continuum Hypothesis. There are things that are not possible for humans or computers to understand. NaNs as a return for 1/0 are simply the computer returning an output equivalent to the human "you can't do that. It's nonsense." Infinity is one of them.

@specialteams28
@specialteams28 8 жыл бұрын
Big bang theory says that the universe is finite. There is a lot of scientific data available that backs up the theory and the pieces fit together to make it rather convincing. I'm not aware of any theory or writings that says the universe is infinite. I've wondered many times though that if matter cannot be created or destroyed, only change in shape, size, composition, where did matter come from in the first place since it can't be created. Obviously it was created. Since it was created, something else created it. Does that something have mass? If so, that something cannot be created or destroyed either so something else had to create it. On on we go forever. So whatever created the universe according to logic must be eternal, no beginning and no end. If there is no eternal force that has always existed outside of time and space, then we wouldn't be here because the universe never would've been created. I'd also like to add one more possibility to the two you already listed. If our universe is finite and is growing outwards ever since the big bang, isn't it possible that whatever created our universe and is outside of it could have created other universes or just other realities?

mebe84 No, when you get the idea of it around your head, which does get some getting used to, it becomes easy (Or rather easier) than before. Obviously, understanding infinity is difficult, yet I find the understanding of the concept of nothing requires far more patience than with infinity. I must apologize if you disagree with that, and looking from the remainging of your commment, you have yet to understand nothing. James Fairbanks Now, that's not my point, and you know it. In fact, that has nothing to do with the discussion. Robert Weekes Granted,in a normal scenario, that would be true. However, granting the idea of a infinite universe, we would have to assume that this would be the case, giving the infinite use of variables. Thus, it is irrational to assume that the results wouldn't be infinite.
@johntheidiot9046
@johntheidiot9046 8 жыл бұрын
mebe84 Well, in a sense. Allow me to (attempt, anyways) to explain: In one single sentence, I would have to put it as: It is not a box fullness, nor is it emptiness, but rather the lack thereof. We would often say that nothing is the lack of something, right? Like, if there's a room without anything, we would say there's nothing in there. Well, that's not quite true, we have the word Empty for that. The room is empty, however, nothing is more like a lack of a room at all. Like, we say space is empty, thus nothing would be outside space. Which is why scientists would claim that taking a picture of the universe (Or more often, the big bang) from outside of it would be completely impossible, as there is nothing to take a picture from. Or, when you have your hand open, you don't have nothing on your hand, you have an empty hand. When you press it towards the wall, there is nothing in between the wall and your hand. I know that made little to no sense, however, that is as good as I can explain it, but that's the prime principle. And I suppose I have then failed to understand it completely, according to Albert Einstein: ''What you cannot easily explain, you have failed to truly understand''.

At least, to hwatever extent we are capable of. However, I must digress, I do feel as if we're heading out of the main point: Which I have no idea anymore more what was. EDIT: Oh, and I should also apologize for the condescending tone I held. I suppose I must have been rather tired.

How the heck can the universe be infinite if the big bang happened? Wouldn't that means there'd be a boundary.......which has been measured as cosmic background radiation?

Gavin fails to realize that the Universe is not infinite! What he describe is theoretically what could happen in a Googolplex universe, but our universe is not this large, and won't be until we near its heat death. I think it is also worth noting that not all atheists deny the existence of god, since we technically cannot disprove this. We just do not believe in the specific gods Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and other religions bestow to us. Almost all religions have a god that is an obvious construct of the human mind. They assign their gods a personality, a physical appearance, a gender, a set of morals, a preference, etc. The fact that god is different in every religion should make this very obvious as well. There is never any consistency with god. You know what we never see god depicted as? We almost never see it depicted as something other than human. If there was a god, I would imagine it as some kind of supercomputer, not a paradoxically invisible, yet at the same time white old man with a beard in the sky that watches everything you do in order to make sure you do not commit sin... Like masturbating or some other stupid shit that humans obviously came up with.

***** It's a common misconception that the material Universe has no end. When we say that the Universe is infinite, what we really mean is that it is unbound. That there is no limitation to its potential expansion, and quantum actions. Prior to the big bang, the Universe was likely nothing more than a small point. At this stage the Universe was known as the Protoverse or Planck Epoch Universe. The Protoverse was likely about 1.6 x 10^-35 meters in size. This is smaller than any known subatomic particle known to man. If it had a quantifiable size at the start, then it likely has a quantifiable size right now. The Universe began to expand when the quantum effects of gravity began to take hold. The Universe has been expanding since then. The plane that we call Space-Time may be infinite, and some scientists do implement Space-Time when discussing the size of the Universe, but understand that this is not a state of matter or energy, and is irrelevant to Gavin's claims. If you want to know more about Space-Time, you can look up String Theory, it is an incredibly interesting field of study. The material Universe is finite. As you keep on moving further away from Earth, there will be a point where you will stop finding galaxies, stars, and planets. One of these low density regions are observable on Earth. This is known as the CMB. It is the furthest region visible to us. I do not deny the existence of a god. It's just that I do not believe in the gods that we have currently. But either way, I did say the Universe is unbound, and maybe something similar to a god is possible. Look up Boltzmann's Brain. It is a theory that Ludwig Boltzmann devised while undergoing a thought experiment. The theory suggests the possibility that a self-aware entity can eventually arise due to random fluctuations out of a state of chaos. This hypothetical entity is what became known as the Boltzmann Brain.

xxFalconArasxx I will look it up, I may have to buy more books. I've heard of string theory but never studied it. I've done a lot of study on entropy. My wife speaks of Boltzmann, she's the chemist, I'm the business side. I'll look more into what you're talking about. I know a lot, still the more I know the more I find out I don't know. I still yet have had anyone explain to me why electron's speed can't be quantified. Except in theory. Keep jumping on me with thoughts. I appreciate it. :-)

Attention Atheists - the point of God is FAITH, not PROOF. Until you understand this fact, you are just spinning your wheels. You cannot lump belief in God to any other argument. You especially ignore fact when you don't take into account someone's positions just because they believe. That is the pretense of knowledge !

Psychedelic Distortion "Facts" get dis-proven all the time. Cases in point the geologic and evolutionary time tables. Both have been changed and no doubt will change again and again. Psychedelic Distortion There's faith in the proof. Which concerning history the proof has been dis-proven over and over. That's fine if you want to think that you're just a hypothesis. Psychedelic Distortion LOL I have proof in my life. You may not be able to see it, still that's not my problem. I don't have to convince others about my evidence of God. What others have to do is disprove what I know to be true, even an atheist has said someone was looking out for me. I just laughed inside. I think to much effort is put in to winning arguments. For me there are no arguments for the most part; really the only things that get under my skin is people blindly following without knowing the reason/proof behind what they believe, the other being people trying to force their belief on others. Both of those come from every where. In all, a good start for any skeptic is to be skeptical of men's observations and interpretations. To many people put faith in men using the scientific method as the proofing mechanism to find out the so called truth is not or is incomplete. Kinda like global warming/climate change, years after "oh my god! we're all going to die!" found out they were manipulating the data that was disseminated...I could walk outside and see it was just a cyclical change. *smh* Even some people's science have an irrational agenda. Honest scientists don't have the problem of "getting caught", they actually want to understand which means they acknowledge that their knowledge may be incomplete, so they eagerly look forward to both re-proofing and disproving.

This universe is infinite, ergo there are an infinite number of things that exist that I would consider absurd, ergo Nu-uh 'cause that's absurd! Ergo god's totally real because my imagination has limits and I claim to be an absolute arbiter of truth who can never be wrong! Or: In an infinite multiverse, YES, there are an INFINITE number of planets of the Charlie Raplins. And the correct response is "wow, infinity is fuckin' weird when you take it to a logical conclusion." not "Nu-uh! God!" Also: You can't even prove premise ONE of your argument: How do you know the universe is infinite? We know we can perceive it as if it expanded at the speed of light from the centre of the universe, which is what we'd expect of an infinite universe, but it's equally possible that either A: Reality as we understand it is finite but expanding or B: eventually light will reach the earth coming from some boundary that's more light years away than there have been years of the universe, or at least light, existing The other argument made: The world being how it is is super fucking unlikely, therefore god 1: Nope. those two aren't connected at all. 2: if I activate a googleplex digit random number generator, it'll spit out a number. By your logic, the correct response is "Oh my god it was divine mandate that this is the number that came out! this is the only number that could have come out!" If your argument is EVER: "the odds of reality being exactly how it is is super low" my immediate response is: "Yeah. That's how the dice landed. It could'a been any number of other results, this is just the one we got." Makes more sense than your argument of "An invisible wizard did it!"

So your whole argument is that this universe is complex because the concept of infinity, therefor God? The biggest flaw in your reasoning is you think infinity is a real physical attribute. Infinity is a concept used in math to represent never-ending ideas and sequences. The issue is math is not bound by physics. Everything that exists has to abide by the laws of physics thus showing that nothing is truly infinite, this includes the universe. So since the universe is actually finite, your God logic falls out the window. Just because it can be mathematically true doesn't mean it can be physically true.

morwind there are some stuff in the Bible, that are negative and immoral, but the big story's in the Bible like the story's in genises have a deeper meaning and teaches people what to do, and how to act. And more than you like to admit, your morals and values do come from the judeo-christian value system that was grounded in culture, that's if you live in the west. morwind well, atheists believe, that life is meaningless when it comes to the universe, there is no afterlife, and in 1000 no one will know that we existed. But they don't act like that.
