the lyrics you read on the mv is actually the english lyrics, JYP changes their original lyrics translation in subtitle to its english version when the english version is dropped,, the genius one is the previous subtitle, so maybe you'll find it confusing how some of them is different. i kinda hate it, but i already remember the original lyrics translation by the time MITM english version dropped, tho, lolol

'mafia' in itzy context is always about that party game though, they dont like actual criminals. 😉 'in the morning' is the phase in the game when you see who got killed and guess who is the mafia. i like the fact they did a whole song about one of their fav games. 😅 the mv is stunning as is the studio choom performance with that whole crew of dancers in full gear! 😎✌️ 'mafia' and 'voltage' are my fav itzy tracks. i love their stronger concepts the most. ⚡🔥🤟 'loco' was great as well. and i cant wait for their 'checkmate' comeback in july! 👏

@@DGReacts maybe you know it under another name! Here in Germany it’s called „werewolf“. I think that name is also used in France. Mafia is the same game as werewolf, but in some Asian countries it has the name mafia.

This song is actually based on the korean mafia game in which one of the players is a mafia and every "night" the mafia chooses someone to die. When "morning" comes, the chosen players gets eliminated and the remaining players vote for who they think the mafia is.

Maybe this video can help you understand the mafia game. Here’s a video from Itzy Cozy House (their most recent reality show): kzbin.info/www/bejne/o5yufZ-Aq7Ropbs So you see, in the morning, all of them guess who is the mafia while proving their innocence to each other. When the night comes, the mafia will “kill” someone then the morning will come again. The cycle continues until the mafia is caught or until there’s no one left alive haha. Basically you have to be good at bluffing. They related the concept of the game to love I guess.

They actually got backlash from some netizen for "romancizing the mafia" so they said it was based on the game "The Mafia" which they play a lot in Korea. Basically its a game of catching whos the mafia hiding in citizen by asking questions etc.

It's more of a reference to real mafia through the game mafia which is huge in South Korea. Even some of the lyrics are from the game itself

I think you are missing one crucial thing: it is not about actual mafia (though they do use some of its imagery, like the break-in). It is about the party game Mafia, also known as Werewolf (remember Yuna saying she's a wolf?). It is played very often by K-pop groups, and you can find multiple examples on KZbin (particularly the bigger groups, as it needs lots of players to be fun; for example, Kep1er did a series of them recently). The game premise, if you do not know, is that at the start of the game the players get random roles. Most will be "innocent citizens", but some will be "mafia". There is also a ton of other roles, but K-pop groups usually make it simple and only add two: one is "policeman", one is "doctor". The game is divided into day and night cycles; during the night, the mafia chooses a player to eliminate, the doctor chooses a person to save, and the policeman chooses a person to run a background check on. If the doctor didn't guess right, when the morning comes (!) there is one less innocent. During the day, the citizenry discusses the happenings, and chooses one person to eliminate. If at any time all the mafia are gone, the citizenry wins (including the doctor and the policeman, including any dead innocents). If the innocent population ever does not outnumber the mafia, the mafia wins. As you can see, it is important for the mafia to play innocent (!) till they pounce (!). Who knows what could happen in the night indeed - mafia getting exposed by the policeman? doctor getting killed by the mafia? We'll know in the morning. As people say, "hit you like the mafia" is not in the original lyrics; korean says "mafia, who could it be?" - the point of the game, finding the culprits before it's too late. And obviously, the parallel that you did get - "I'm going to hide in plain sight like the mafia, I'm going to stalk you and bide my time, and when you least expect it, I will make myself known." Also, if you want to learn more about the editing aspect of MVs (as I am sure you must be curious, if you are an editor yourself), I have a channel to recommend: Jordan Orme is a MV editor, and he analyses (and fanboys over) many cool K-pop MVs, including this one.

FYI the lyrics on Genie are the translation of the Korean lyrics. The Lyrics on the official music video in ENGLISH are the ENGLISH Lyrics from the English version. Slightly different. Also the song is about the MAFIA game (popular in Korea) as a metaphor for a secret love, it is not referring to the actual mafia.
