You could always pick up the light novel. There are quite a few people doing regular bookworm content for the novel right now on KZbin, in particular Trash Tier Waifu and The Chattering Magpie are always enjoyable to watch/listen to. ^^ That being said, giving the anime more popularity is certainly deserved and might help the studio get the money and time they need for a proper fourth season. The third one was... a rollercoaster, with high heights and deep lows and a whole lot of rushing and cutting content. Still worth seeing, even if it's a little bit of a let-down when compared to the first two seasons.

Ascendance of a Bookworm is a huge Light Novel series. It getting finished this year in JP and have ongoing ENG translation that already covers over 30+ books. Praise to Quof (the translator). It a massive series with a tight fanbase that adore it. The author Miya Kazuki is a magnificent writer. The story of AoB was structured from start to finish before she started to write it and is very consistent. Even in late game we still getting events that were foreshadowed back from part 1 and 2. And it has a lot of sensitive and mature themes covered. Such as Slavery, Child abuse, Human trafficking, Views on women, Civil war, Class system, Politics for sensitive content and Parenting, Family, Relationships overall. It WHOLESOME considering everything that was listed before. You could easily introduce people of every age in this series thanks to it narrative. And you have infinite reread potential

So excited that you finally got a chance to react to Ascendance of a Bookworm. It is a really amazing series. There are currently 3 seasons, no word on it continuing past that, but it is possible. The third season came out in 2022. Without spoiling anything that you don't learn in the opening minute of the show, yes it is an isekai. I have been recommending it because you have been enjoying the world building of Mushoku Tensei, and Bookworm has some of the best world building of any anime. The fact that I could tell you the different mannerisms and social etiquette of farmers, working class city people, merchants, nobles and the distinctions between the social hierarchy of the nobles, how that changes between regions within the duchy, and the differences between duchy's, shows just how much attention to detail there is in this show. The fact that that is just a tiny fraction of the world building, and that it can accomplish all of that without lengthy info dumps and integrate it so naturally into the story is a testament to how well written it is. I would say from a purely writing perspective, Ascendance of a Bookworm is the best written isekai, even beating out Mushoku Tensei and Re:Zero. While the show is slow paced at the start, and doesn't have the ultra high budget of a Mushoku Tensei, it more than makes up for it with its charm and pulling out the stops when it needs to. Don't let the lighthearted nature of the openings fool you into thinking there isn't much plot, its got a lot more going on than meets the eye. The light novel series is really incredible and the anime does a generally really good job of adapting it. Seeing you react to this gives me hope that there are enough people who will vote for reactions to shows like March Comes in Like a Lion, Barakamon, and A Place Further Than The Universe. I would absolutely love to get a reaction to the endings as well.

Ascendance of a bookworm is an isekai about, you guessed it, a bookworm. The girl lived in modern times, when access to information is so easy everyone take it for granted, then is sent to a medieval context that's the opposite. As in, she's from a poor familly at a time where books are the least of their worries because even learning how to read isn't common for lower classes! The cultural shock is really big, but then she decides to go on a quest to find if books even exist in this world, as to not (almost literally) die of boredom. Very sweet anime starting with a very small scope (her perspective as a kid) that grows more and more as she herself becomes older and learn more about the world around her, and society. The story span throught many years and one great thing they did is giving different clothes to the protagonist as not only she grow physically from kid to teen to adult, but also reach milestones in her goals. And just like "kids goals" becomes "basic milestones" you pass by when you get older, there is more to this anime than just the quest for books and struggles of being poor.

Ascendance of a Bookworm is VERY sweet and wholesome (not in a Made in Abyss sence, mind you). Highly recommend if you want some comfy cozy vibes, slow paced story about a girl striving to have her dream come true. Somebody already said in the comments - it's an isekai about a librarian that got reincarnated in another world with NO BOOKS, imagine a horror more severe for someone who's whole purpose in life was to read and care for books! So she took it upon herself to spread literacy far and wide, and we're witnessing all the struggles, hardships and wholesome moments that follows with it. Light novels has already amassed to 5 parts and 3 seasons are covering only 2 parts of it. Haven't seen such wholesome anime with well eritten characters, and more or less serious story and worldbuilding in a while. Highly recommend watching and if time allows - reading.

Bookworm suffers from a VERY slow start. As the title suggests it is an isekai about a girl who likes books in a world where books are for the rich and nobility. She uses her knowledge in order to make books. There is no action in the first season making people think it is boring. In reality there are hints to a complex world building in the background. The first three seasons cover the first big part of the story and the new season coming is where the story really opens up a new chapter. I was so intrigued after watching the anime that I started reading the light novel and have never regretted it. Every Monday I wait for new chapters to be released. The story somehow keeps building and building. If you are looking for something good to read then this story based around books is worth trying. You can binge the anime and then hop right in or start from the beginning.

Ascendance of a Bookworm is a popular light novel series that is continuously being translated. There are 6 books remaining to be translated (after about 30 already), and a new translated book is released every 2 months. [spoiler warning for Made in Abyss] I think the idea behind the openings for Made in Abyss was to make them very melancholy... the first seasons opening focuses on the hopeful feelings that Riko and Reg had at the outset of their journey. at the beginning, it matches the tone... and then as you go on and on, it matches less and less. yet still, you have this constant reminder of how it began, and how much hope they had back then. it shows how far they've truly fallen. in season two, I think it even more blatantly catalogues these two parallel journeys... Riko and Reg's journey in the present, and the group with Vueko and Irumyui in the past. in both cases, the tragedy mostly stems from the contrast between these tender, fragile bonds that are so warmly shared between the characters, and the sickeningly brutal way that the abyss tears them apart. the opening is there to remind you that they were happy once. I can't wait for you to hear the ED for season 2... that one is gorgeous.

Riko never loses her hope and enthusiasm, though. She hasn't fallen at all. Deep in Abyss keeps that up along with her. Katachi's lyrics talk about being shaped by pain. It's not to remind you that they used to be happy.
@kamuyking551 Жыл бұрын
@@BloodrealmX yes, but Riko has always been a really bittersweet character. if not by her own perception, then at least to others. they always knew they couldn't keep her from going down there, and she has already vaguely accepted the idea that she may never return. part of her character is this melancholic paradox. Riko knows that people go down and don't come back up, but she's still trying to find Lyza, despite this. and then later she learns that she was brought back up from the depths... brought back from the dead perhaps. there's a question there, around whether or not there's something miraculous occurring that may spare her, or whether she's getting her hopes up in a tragically unrealistic way. in the first place, the Abyss has an addictive quality to it. it draws people in, despite the danger. whatever that attitude is... that positivity that convinces a person that the abyss is an adventure worth dying for... there's something sinister to it. like once a person has it in their head to pursue that, they cannot be dissuaded, and you've probably already lost them. even if they come back up, they'll always go right back down, again and again, because it's not enough for them. I'm thinking not just of Lyza and the other white whistles, who became so ingrained in the abyss that now they hardly, if ever, leave... but also raiders like Habo, whose wife wishes he'd actually return and stay for once. he'll probably keep going down, again and again, until he can't come back up, for one reason or another. there's nothing that can be done. the fact that Riko is getting dragged in so young is partially disturbing _because_ of her childlike optimism. at least most people who work their way up to white whistle get to be adults before they go. Riko literally doesn't know what she's getting herself into, and she and Reg are also pretty directly paralleled to Vueko and Irumyui's journey as well. they started out hopeful... they had questions, and an ache in their lives that they wanted to escape, and they'd found each other for comfort. but yes, pain did literally reshape them, in every way. the other shoe may not have dropped yet for Riko and Reg, but there's a lot of writing on these walls.

Ascendance of a Bookworm, I feel, is probably the most realistic fantasy isekai out there (which I realize sounds like an oxymoron lol). The world feels like the sort of middle-ages society that would realistically develop if magic existed and was hereditary. The main character feels like a (relatively) normal person and not just a power fantasy protagonist, using her knowledge of advanced civilization for her benefit and not going on some grand quest to defeat evil or change the world or whatever. And the characters around her also feel very real, having wide-ranging reactions to whatever they learn from or about the MC (and pretty much all wondering how the hell this child is so smart lol). Despite the series being very low action (or maybe because of it), the finale of season 1 was, in my opinion, one of the most badass moments in isekai. That is all I will say.

The anime (AoB) is effectively the prologue for the real story that happens starting in part 4 of the light novel series. The anime covers parts 1 and 2 of the light novel series, but does have some fairly heavy editing and content skipped from the light novels. So if you end up watching the series and do like it, pick up the light novels, you won't be disappointed rediscovering most of what the anime overlooked. As far as how the real story goes, it becomes something of a cross between Harry Potter and Game of Thrones; despite its unassuming start of a book obsessed girl being reincarnated into a world where books are beyond her reach. AoB is isaki done really well.

An interesting tidbit about the musical instrument "harspiel" used throughout the show, it was inspired by the instrument played by a musician the author really liked...and that musician ended up being the person hired to play it for the show. The author actually found out after the fact.

Think Ascendance of a Bookworm mainly started being recommended more because of Dr Stone, they are both fairy edumacational series. Your plot guess was somehow simultaneously close and far off lol.

Having finished the series so far I do wonder what you think the openings should've comprised of. I think the openings do a perfect job showcasing the spirit of adventure experiencing the known and unknown of the depths of the Abyss whether be it good or bad as well as looking back on the journey. Basically Riko's character. I also like that the show doesn't shy away at all from what people wouldn't like to see. It feels real and raw.

I think kids nowadays really have a good chance to develop before facing what the world has to tear them apart. MIA harkens back to the time of exploring frontiers and unknown dangers when kids had to grow up faster and fight, because their life expectancy was probably 35 years old....
@aidaid3962 Жыл бұрын
I love how the series illustrates the desire for exploration and discovery. It's great to see characters driven by a strong passion for one singular endeavor. If Riko were to wait in relative safety until she was older, then she might be unable to achieve her goals.

Ascendance of a Bookworm is actually quite different from your guess, it is what you could call a "reverse" power fantasy. The protagonist is a obsessed with books and literature, and she is reincarnated into another world were books don't exist/aren't seen by common people and she is physically ill and constantly bedridden. It is a wonderful series that I would love to see you react to, it has quickly become one of my personal favorites.

Ascendance of a Bookworm was awesome, looking forward to Season 4. Also you forgot one option for random recommendations, you are reacting to a similar anime, either in tone, theme or feel and then you get recommendations of the same, Ascendance of a Bookworm feels a little closer to Mushoku Tensei in the World Building and growing with the character.

Ascendence of a Bookworm follows the traditional Isekai formula, but it is executed in a much more unique and heartwarming fashion than the vast majority of isekai. For the anime fan who has burned out on Isekai generally, this show is a major breath of fresh air.

Ascendance of a Bookworm is one of my favorite anime of all time. As for why Bookworm suddenly appeared out of nowhere for you, maybe because it's not a super actiony show. Maybe it's just one of those things where lots of people enjoyed it, but not as many people were confident in it doing well in the tournament. I was surprised to see it do so well, but I'm totally here for it.

Is it more like a slice of life story or is there some mystery, interesting stories like the Monogatari series? The more I'm hearing about it, the more I kinda want to check it out.
@WarTalonX Жыл бұрын
There is some mystery to it in a way, but it's more of a slice of life story. Early on in the series there are some hints of grander things, but because our view only comes from the protagonist it isn't really the focus until select moments. IMO this creates some huge payoffs that are absent from many other series.@@artboymoy

Haven't heard about Ascendance of a Bookworm getting a season 4, probably just rumours. Season 3 aired last year and there hasn't been any news since then. I think your last guess is probably correct - sometimes someone just randomly thinks of something to request and then other people start to request it too. Bookworm is a worthy show to react to, though - it's one of my favourite isekai, and I'm not a huge isekai guy. Was very pleased to see this pop up since not a lot of people know about it. Do check out the endings too! The second and third ending are standouts.

Ascendance of a Bookworm is very sweet and very serious, it takes a more mature approached to relationships and lots of politics which is what really attracts many to it since most isekai leave out the politics and focus of action and battles. Asendance of a Bookworm is both very sweet but also has moments of darkness. The world building is amazing, it's quite a bit slower in terms of anime but it's very much worth watching in my opinion. For recommendations "Dark Gathering" is a good OP to react to, it also might interest you since it's a Horror anime, despite it's 'cute" first impression it's quite dark.

People often focus on the dark parts of MiA, but the reason it works is because its shadows are profoundly dark and the lights profoundly bright. In S1 Riko's injury and convalescence is an triumphant ode to the tenacity of life that few series can copy exactly because rarely is a portrayal of a near-death situation quite so harrowing. Ascendance of a Bookworm is a special series because it is an NHK series = it was funded by JP national TV (taxpayer's money). Those series are visually unimpressive because of restricted budgets, but importantly, they are extremely likely to receive new seasons until the adaptation is complete regardless of popularity/financial success. This can be a blessing for series with unique premises that would not work as a simple cash grab. One other series of this kind you already know is Log Horizon. Funnily enough, you can even see artstyle similarities between the two.

Ascendance of a bookworm, is based on a light novel (originally web novel), and the volumes currently being translated are extremely good, that is why you are seeing a lot of enthusiasm for the series. The first 2 Bookworm openings have the same singer but the third has a different one. I'd say the reason why they sound familiar is to an extent they seem to be done in the same song style to a degree. as for the Bookworm series itself can't really explain much if anything since it would be spoilers, but it is so worth it. saw it pop up in my recommended list during a time that otherwise I didn't have any anime to watch and when I gave it a try, I fell in love right away and didn't think it would be as good as it is, hell I recommended it to several friends, and they had the same reaction I did. It'll get more seasons eventually but no news yet on the next season. If and when you watch it, I hope you enjoy it as much as my friends and I have.

Ascendance of a Bookworm is easily one of the stories the isekai genre most needed to bring freshness to the genre. It's incredibly wholesome but also surprisingly deep and grounded. *I 1000% recommend it for the G.O.T. Extra channel as the next isekai series.* It's a completely different experience from what you usually see from the isekai genre and easily one of best written isekai stories I know.
