This is how it all begins. It's a cool hobby but it can get expensive. It's a good time to embrace the hobby because affordable gear sounds really good these days. Welcome aboard. It's refreshing to see women getting into this. It is fun.

Welcome to the journey! As others have said, this hobby can get expensive, but it can also be extremely rewarding. Enjoy.

Love your video and excitement for your system. I think your orange color CD connection might be for a digital coaxial cable. Your other cables are RCA cables ( Red & White) and look like a digital coaxial cable. See if there is a similar connection on the back of your receiver? You only need one cable to connect both your CD player and receiver. I bought one (digital coaxial cable) for around $10 from Amazon. PS - you will have to select the input like you did in your video. The selection might read DIGITAL or COAXIALA for example. Good luck!

Spread those speakers apart, to experience the stereo sound. Also, they seem to be bookshelves. Buy a pair of speaker stands, in order to have the tweeters at ear level. Enjoy the music. 🎵

Okay. Ittie bittie education. Only because you appear to be excited about learning this stuff. White and Red connectors on both your DVD and your Receiver are traditional Analog audio connections. Where you were looking and saw CD, Orange and Yellow, are Audio and Video connectors, meant for connecting a DVD player. Yellow is Video, Orange is 'Digital' Audio. The Orange connections on both your DVD and Reciever transmit and receive all available channels digitally (as much as 5.1 for DVD, although for CD audio it's only 2.0 (left/right)). CD is digital audio. 0s and 1s. To be played on loudspeakers it has to be converted from digital to analog. That's done via a Digital to Analog Converter or DAC. Both pieces of your equipment have this. The DVD player has a DAC and the receiver has a DAC. Only one is used at any given time. I mention this because I suspect your Yamaha likely has the superior DAC. Your Yamaha in its day (2012) got really decent reviews. Your DVD player is what we call a Cheap Chinese White Label. It's imported by retailers that aren't typically audio outlets. They're drugstores and hardware stores that purchase White Label goods and slap their store's brand on them. You'll see the same player in multiple stores but with different brand names on them. That's okay though. It's plenty capable of reading 0s and 1s. What I'd suggest you try is the single cable connection, Orange on your DVD to Orange (CD AV3), and change your input to AV3. The White/Red cables you have aren't meant for digital, but will work. Just hook up either white or red. That will work for a test. What this will do is allow the DVD to transmit the digital signal to the receiver and allow the receiver's DAC to do the heavy work of converting the digital signal to analog. I suspect the Yamaha will do a better job of the conversion. They do sell cables specifically designed for digital signals for under ten bucks on Amazon. Don't spend more than ten bucks. Search 'coaxial digital audio cable'. You may find no difference, or you might be pleasantly surprised. Hard to say, the Mintek is obscure enough that I'm guessing that its DAC is inferior. I may be wrong. But doesn't cost you anything to try using your existing white/red cable. As for the yellow, you'd only use this if you were outputting video from your Yamaha to a Display. You won't use this if you're only playing CDs.

@kojently It's AWESOME to see a lady so excited to be getting started in the HIFI Audio hobby. I think you are going to have a great time on the journey. However, don't believe everything that is said about the "gear you need". A couple hundred $ can get you very good gear. Research deep before you buy. Have fun!

The cd play has to have digital out enabled and the receiver has to have digital input enabled or selected to work using the single digital cable. Hopefully your manual for your receiver can be downloaded. Or you have a copy. Some of them are written by engineers who think everyone understands electronics lol . Have fun with your new hobby!

I had that same Yamaha surround sound receiver for my upstairs tv and it was frustrating. You may be better off purchasing a good 2-channel stereo receiver, not a surround sound receiver. These surround sound receivers can be good, but in many cases you need to hook the display to the tv to configure it, especially since you are not sure how the previous owner set it up and configured the buttons. A simple audio 2 channel receiver would reduce your frustrations and "likely" have a better sound. I have both home theater and 2 channel audio. These surround receivers can occasionally be frustrating. Hey, free is free and I cannot argue with that.

Very nice! Just got my turntable, cd player and tape deck all set up as well. I yearn for the day when I can get my JBL lt100t's hooked up again, but unfortunately they're too much for where I'm at right now :( So the little studio monitors will have to do for now. Anyway, cd's are definitely the way to go when it comes to classical music and jazz (anything that has really quiet passages where you'll be able to hear crackles or tape hiss) unless you have a really good turntable setup, phono preamp and then get some audiophile pressings. For everything else, vinyl is hard to beat. It's just such a pain sometimes XD Happy listening!
