Battery Spencer
If you are looking for the traditional photo you have seen hundreds of times, with the Golden Gate Bridge in the foreground and San Francisco in the background, then look no further than the Battery Spencer overlook on the northside of the bridge. This viewpoint provides a jaw-dropping vista of the famous bridge, as well as a lot of military history from the area. It is one of my favorite places in San Francisco, and read on for all the information on how to visit yourself.
If you've ever seen a car commercial featuring the Golden Gate Bridge, chances are good that part of it was shot on Conzelman Road leading up to Battery Spencer. At almost 500 feet above the bay, this high cliff-top vantage point makes for great views today and was a prime location for big coastal defense guns when the army was here. Come for the view, but be sure to walk around the remains of the battery, a vestige of a bygone era.
Marin Headlands
The Marin Headlands has an amazing richness of history and biological diversity.
The Marin Headlands is known for its unique geology, its fog-swept coastal prairie ecosystem, and its many chapters of history. Dramatic cliffs of oceanic rock offer sweeping views of the Golden Gate Bridge, and the foghorn frequently resounds over the misty lagoon and rolling hills of coyote brush and sage. The Headlands’ human history is long and layered - originating with the Coast Miwok peoples who have lived here for thousands of years and evolving to become a hotspot for coastal defense through the Cold War. Today, we welcome international and local visitors, jr. rangers, hikers, surfers, students, birders, geologists, historians, and researchers. We hope you find a way in which your own lives and passions intersect with the themes underlying the story of this park.
Coyote Point Marina
Nestled between the head of Coyote Point and the breakwater, Coyote Point Marina is situated out of the way of prevailing headwinds, and as a result enjoys sunny, warm weather in the spring and summer. Whether you’re a permanent berther or stopping in for a visit, the Coyote Point Marina is an ideal getaway destination.
Coyote Point is a regional recreation area that provides a wide variety of opportunities: picnicking, swimming, windsurfing, bicycling, jogging, fishing, boating, and sailing. Kids will love the giant, castle-and-dragon-themed Magic Mountain Playground and CuriOdyssey where they can get up-close to wild animals and enjoy hands-on science exhibits. Stroll along the beach promenade, visit the marina and its breakwater, or explore the saltwater marsh. See shorebirds, colorful boats, windsurfers, and planes from the San Francisco International Airport.
