Hearing about great shows like Static and I think Teen Titans getting canceled originally because of the lack of toy sales really make me angry. I remember being a kid back then and I looked for Static toys and never saw them in the store to buy. If they even made toys for some of the shows back then they weren't readily available for purchase. Honestly I don't even remember commercials for Static toys.

@speake7777777Ай бұрын
There was actually a video game that got scrapped before release. Beta versions of the ROM used to exist online
@MadameTammaАй бұрын
The reason for their cancellation is a lot dumber than just toy sales if you believe what Paul Dini had to say about it in that IGN article that came out a few years ago. According to what he said in the article, a lot of Superhero cartoons get cancelled too early often when the studios run analytics and discover that the ratio between boy viewers and girl viewers swings more in the direction of a girl fan base. They want girls to watch their shows, but only if there's MORE boys than girls in the audience. This is because toys made for boys (think action figures), and toys made for girls (things like Plushies) are different, so if they're banking on having a more boys audience then the marketing team will focus on making more boys toys from the get go. If it's discovered that there are more girls who like it, then they would feel like they'd have to scrap their current toy line and marketing all together and do a shift towards girls, and don't think it's worth the trouble to do so. Also shows made for girls come with a stigma, and there are some writers that don't want that. So they'd rather not continue at all rather than have to make what would then be marketed as a "girls show", even if the shows themselves come across as pretty gender neutral.
@BaithNaАй бұрын
You're thinking of Young Justice. Teen Titans had like 5 seasons and the toys sales were so good it got a spin off that has lasted 15+ years now.
@ChartreuseDanАй бұрын
Taken in context we can assume it wasn't that children and parents weren't buying static shock merchandise, it was just that manufacturers and toy stores weren't. Boardrooms full of aging, [brightest shade on the gradient] yuppie leftovers still in the throes of [not pepsi] withdrawal ruining everything for everyone; very much still the theme at the turn of the millennium (hopefully this version will get past google-bot's delicate sensibilities)

I think the reason one may find this show refreshing now is that while it does contain a little bit of naivete due to being a kids show it contains a very real lesson about always lending a hand to help others regardless of belief. An original character that preaches and embodies the neccesity of community in a world where the most vocal and the media is insistent on people placing themselves in silos when in truth that is the last thing most want in this world.
@GrizabeeblesАй бұрын
In some ways it feels like the Arrowverse in general (but especially Flash and Black Lightning) were pushing back against the optimism of Static Shock decades later. The idea of Virgil's mom recieving a direct warning the night she dies and then going out anyway *because its the right thing to do* seems to only come up as a tragic flaw rather than a high ideal.
@leithaziz2716Ай бұрын
I think the lesson we struggle the most to believe in is that there's worth in ideals and integrity. The world doesn't have to reward you for your kindness (nowadays, people might even demean you or call you stupid), but you are not wrong to stick to how you value life. I think this is why characters like Superman and Batman have kept their appeal for so long. A story might not be realistic, but maybe there's still wisdom to be found in it if you perceive it as an ideal of how things should be. Technically none of this is real, but it leaves an impact, and that's gotta count for something.

Sure, the show can often get preachy, but they still tell important, valid and good messages that should be heard and never forgotten. Sooo a couple things - it's so interesting how the mom stuff turned out. When i was a kid in the early 2000s ,dwayne mcduffie was online alot. I got his aim name and i used to message him after school online while i was drawing. He was super accessible and open. He regretted killing the mom off, since she was alive in the comics. I also think he regretted it because of the stereotype of single parent black families. But as a kid that was shocking to me to hear but as an adult..i totally get why he felt that way now. - its funny how much of a positive light static and Virgil was in people's lives in the cartoon, in the comics he wasnt as positive. They always dealt with hard issues but that's not always how Virgil dealt with them. In the comics Richie was gay and static at first couldn't understand. Him and his friends were throwing gay slurs, he didn't realize how much that just Richie and grew to change his ways. That comic came out in like 96/97... very much something that can still be of value today.

90s kid here, we had shows that organically approached modern contemporary issues without being overly preachy. They taught the lesson then moved on. You learned from the episode because you weren't forced, coerced, or shamed into. The shows back then illustrated meaningful points of morality through an honest and sincere approach. Not as a weekly grift or product placement for "fill in the blank" organization/groups that at end of the day dont truly care about the cause they rep. At the end of the day it was about unity. There was a real sense of community in each of these shows. Everything felt honest and genuine

I always kind of preferred in the comics how he DID agree to the gang war, because he was pressured into believing it was the only way to get revenge on the guy who beat him up, as a result of Vergil doing something decent (giving his friend Frieda support so that she could turn down a guy who didn't respect her). And it was after a pretty systemic history of being bullied and harassed, so on some level it was about getting his respect and cred, so that him and his friends wouldn't be messed with any more. Not on the same level as Uncle Ben, but I think heroes need these "Uncle Ben Moments" where they realize that their actions have consequences, and they need to be able to be better in order to be heroes. For Vergil, that was realizing that was putting himself in that position by allowing the ever-present factors in urban Afro culture, especially systemic ones that targeted him for being smart and nerdy while also being black, and the ones that society puts on young black men to be a certain way. I think it was extremely important that Vergil both be a good kid, but also not be totally immune to the factors of society that he had to rebuke in order to become the hero we love.
@kateorgera590721 күн бұрын
I mean, he DID go to the docks in the show too. I know he was more pressured into it in the show, but that almost makes the stakes higher, because he'd be facing issues from both FStop AND Wade for disagreeing. But once he gets handed that gun, that's sort of his "Uncle Ben" moment - the gun makes his deal with Wade all a little too real, because while comics!Virgil's mom is alive, cartoon!Virgil's mom died because of gang violence. If Virgil hadn't decided the protection wasn't worth it and started to leave, he would have been right in the middle of the explosion and might have had a much more physical or hard-to-manage mutation (or died! Didn't a bunch of the big bang victims die in the comics?) instead of what he got. And if it hadn't been for the Big Bang, Virgil definitely would have faced the consequences for his disloyalty to Wade.

Sure there are a couple areas where the execution could have been better here and there, but overall it put us in situations with characters where it made sense that they would go through these struggles and just let them… exist in them man. Static has one of my favorite superhero origins. He is given the option to join a gang, receive protection and possible revenge from his bully and almost takes it, but once confronted with what he would have to do, his upbringing kicks in. He was raised by a family that puts a lot of emphasis on helping the community but also knowing full well the dangerous of their environment, like the gangs they share their streets with. So he goes into mature, responsible mode and that leads to a string of correct decisions. (What to do with the gun, where he should go, how to get out of there, etc.) and that informs how he handles dangerous situations as a superhero going forward. Making sure people in need get to where they need to be. He's a kind hearted kid with streets smarts.

Nothings subtle or hinted at anymore and the story always takes last priority over the propaganda message. Can’t even get a decent character without them changing motivations from scene to scene these days 😮💨

@10:44 "What Static Shock teaches us is that resilience is not found in individualism, but manifested through community." Eh, I'm gonna push back on that a bit. Not to say that resilience isn't manifested through community for Virgil/Static, as you've set up some excellent arguments on how Virgil's family and community provide great support and examples for his own behavior, and that what the Bang Babies need most is often that kind of compassion and support, but I am not of the mind that individualism and collectivism need be mutually exclusive. Look at the reveal episode vs the series finale - while Mr. Hawkins recognizes Virgil and Richie deserve to decide how to use their powers for themselves, a scientist decides that the best thing for the collective good of the city means taking all meta humans away, making the cure airborne . Even Static and Gear, who have done so much good, have the decision to keep using their powers responsibly taken out of their hands (which is especially concerning when thinking about Future Shock and knowing they're meant to be heroes at least into middle age!), but they don't say much against it because that would be selfish. But I sort of wish others in Dakota had stuck up for them instead of them getting their powers back because of Ebon and Hot Streak. While it's amazing that a cure is finally made available and that villains like Ebon and Hot Streak can be contained, I do feel like that episode is a good argument for why individual and collective good need to be balanced. As you say in Discussion 2, a lot of the show focuses on individuals within larger frameworks, but the individuals are still important. How many times do Bang Babies fall into bad groups like the Meta-Breed because their need to belong somewhere is manipulated? That's collectivism to a negative extreme, manifesting in a high control group. While it generally takes a support system to turn away from groups like that, it also takes a lot of individual will, a willingness to break from the crowd and risk rejection to find a better dynamic for oneself and follow one's values over the group's. True individualism to me at least does not equate to selfishness. While Virgil's values are drawn from his community, every time Virgil sees a Bang Baby for WHO they are over WHAT they are, reaching out to outcasts in spite of what they may have done, that's individualism.

Having an actual show about Ghanaian super hero blew my mind as a kid. I remember running to grab my parents to make them watch it with. Static will always be one of my favorite DC heros.

I actually miss when superheroes hated something bad, like how Batman, Spiderman and Shock (respectively inspired by the bat) hate guns because of the damage they did to them *personally* , not just heroes having "weaknesses" or what have you. It made them relateable, traumatized, vulnerable, but not weak. It's turned to a motivation, in a way. It's such a simple writing tool.

I saw a video essay of “The Boy Scout” archetype and how a lot of people think it’s flat, but the author of the video said it’s the constant overcoming of wrong that’s the super power. I think it’s a little deeper. I think it’s simply altruism itself is enchanting. And showing how easy and hard it can be for each person is eye opening. Just like Static Shock

I would always have my usernames starting with either Staticdragon or Darkshock. It was a way to honor my favourite hero who was the most relatable character for POCs growing up in the 2000s.

The time travel episode where Virgil meets his mom made me cry again. After all these years, I still cry to this episode. This and the homeless girl episode. God it hurts.

A trend that will never get old to me is when u have time travel episodes like this and the main character gets to see someone that haven't seen in a long time due to their heroic demise, but even when telling them what happened, they still choose to go out a hero not for the glory but because its the right thing to do which helps the main character in more ways in one

This was one of my favorite shows when it originally aired. One of the things that always stood out to me was that the hero was written as a person first, and a superhero second. He is not a flat archetype like that Batman, or the Teen Titans. Virgil has its own hopes and dreams, and they are different from the goals that Static pursues he was one of the only superheroes I can think of from that era that actually managed a work life balance, and that might make him the most powerful one.

Dwayne Mcduffie was a man who cared a lot about representation. He was vocal about it, and it was present in this show. And he were alive today, the anti woke crowd would hate him.

Even though Static was canceled, the ending made sense. 99% of the Bang Babies lost their powers. The last Bang Babies standing were Virgil, Ritchie and that Abomination (Hotstreak & Ebon). If there was a season 5, the criminals would be normal, possibly equipped with futuristic weapons (maybe Intergang), and the Abomination plotting against Static and Gear every now & then. Season 4 was a perfect conclusion. However, I wish we got to see Static(Virgil of the present) in the JLU. We got that cowboy, the knight, and that guy who piloted a mecha, whose names I can't remember. Even the Creeper was a JLU member. Static should've been in the JLU.
