That Leica "look" probably comes from the lens. Low element count means microcontrast is higher, giving images more of a "3-D" look. This is in sharp contrast (no pun intended) to modern glass from Sony, Tamron, Sigma, etc. which have lots of elements and low microcontrast (but higher sharpness). This is the definition of the "leica-pop," "zeiss-pop," etc. terms that lots of photographers say - what they're really talking about is the microcontrast, which makes images more life-like. It's also why vintage lenses have a "look" - most of them are simpler designs with fewer elements.

My first job straight out of college was with Leica, creating CAD drawings of their incredible lenses. This was pre-digital and in the early days of computer-aided design. Sadly, even with my staff discount, a Leica camera was beyond affordable on a $14k/year salary. I did snag myself a Leica slide projector that I own to this day.

I was looking at the Q2 which is a fantastic camera, but then discovered the incredible world of Fujifilm and more importantly the X-T4 and its wonderful selection of dials! For half the price of a Q2 I can have a beautifully tactile camera with a range of prime lenses. Fuji film simulations are another reason to choose them... After 25 years of Nikon, I've moved over to the Fuji side!
@aaron-bieber

My go-to kit right now is the X-T4 and the Voigtlander Nokton Classic 40mm f/1.4 (about $400 new), which is a Leica M mount, so you need something like the Fotodiox Leica M to Fuji X adapter (about $50). Fixed focal length and manual everything is a completely different experience from today's typical "point and press the button" style. I'm currently awaiting my Canon FD to Fuji X adapter so I can shoot this vintage Canon FD 50mm f/1.4 (can be found on eBay for about $100). You can definitely have a new shooting experience without spending $6k.

The Sony RX1 series cams are half the price and even that seems ridiculous to me. If you want fixed focal length.... you can grab a Canon RP and a 35mm or even 16mm for 1/5th the price.... stick on that one lens and run around. I jumped on the fixed 28 lifestyle about 2 years ago. I can never go back, it widened my perspective in every way. Once you get the hang of composing more, turning clutter into context, it makes storytelling so much more poignant. It's not far off a 24 in use, but just has a little less dramatic curving distortion. It does everything. Except maybe moonshots.

I've always thought there's something special about fixed focal length cameras. It forces you to alter your own perspective, not the camera's perspective. If you want something easy to use, don't get one. But if you want to push your own visual boundaries, get one focal length.

Those of us who began our photography as kids in the 1960s began with fixed lens cameras like Kodaks, and Halinas - bought for a few pocket-money pounds, and pushed them to their practical limits, home-processing the Kodak or Ilford film we pushed through them, and printing from the negs on Gnome enlargers in blacked-out boxrooms or bathrooms, with dishes sitting on hot water bottles, etc., etc. THAT was the way to learn photography. Everyone is SO spoilt now, with their multi-lens camera-phones - and interchangeable digital cameras. So, yes, the enforced discipline of working with a fixed lens camera is what we all did decades ago. Because as kids, we couldn't afford to do anything else. Good training for lifelong shooting..!

It's the lenses. When I shot the GH5, the images fro the Leica 42.5mm 1.2 and especially the Leica 8-18mm had this crazy different look, and honestly, there was was what looked like film grain in those images. I'm talking the stills now, but even when filming I found there was a different look. I shoot on Canon C70 and R5 now and I spend a lot of time trying to recreate that look I grew to love, and which became my style back in the GH5 days. I recently watched a documentary about the guy who owns YYE camera repair in the eastern united states. he's from China. Wish I could find the name it was on Vimeo. He talked about his dad using a Leica for reporting in the 50's and how Leica uses rare earth in their glass, which gives them a different look and colors. I started investigating Leica again a few days ago, and in particular, the Q and Q2, and now you post this. Lol. Very interesting. :) I'm from Winnipeg by the way, but now live in LA. Wish I could move back to Canada but kind of stuck here now. Anyway, I love the way the Leica glass looks and going to try to move back to more stills again. I started shooting in 1986 after a shop class. 54 years old now, and have been chasing the dollar a long time. I need to start taking more images for *me.*. Thanks for all you and Matty and my fellow Canadians you hang with do up there. You all inspire me to maybe share more of my own work and struggles on youtube as the analytical side of my brain battles the creative side.

I have a Q2 and I love it so much - also the line about how our cameras are a tool is too true - they are tools no matter what brand you go with - I honestly prefer Leica because it works for me, but I think Sony, Canon, Nikon, Fujifilm, and Panasonic all have options that are very usable for anyone.
@RiposteThis
@RiposteThis 2 жыл бұрын
Why does the Leica work for you more than the other companies? What does the Q2 do that the other companies don't? It can't be ergonomics because the Q2 is literally a rectangle with a lack of buttons to make doing things more efficient. The screen doesn't tilt, so it's more difficult and uncomfortable to get low or high shots. They went with a weird focal length that is not great for up close portraits, the 45mp sensor isn't any more or less sharper than other brands 40+ mp sensors. I'm legitimately wondering what makes the Q2, which is an $8500 Canadian camera worth that price even remotely. And please don't say "there is something about the Leica".

@@RiposteThis the answer is simple : people pay for the brand. They pay for that red dot. They pay for being in an "exclusive" club. Most wont admit that this is the case, so they will simply repeat : "there is something about leica" ..lol
