FINALLY Tasting a Pint of KILKENNY

1998. I sat in a pub on the Isle of Arran after climbing Goat Fell on a sunny summers afternoon with a pouch of tobacco (old holborn) and drank pint after pint of Kilkenny. It was the finest pint I'd had. I went back on the last ferry home a happy smelly man. I've lived in OZ since then and haven't ever had a pint like it. Cheers. Currently drinking Guinness out a can and missing home.

Just back from Arran and climbed the 4 Corbetts. No Kilkenny anywhere sadly but enjoyed a few cold Tennents, not the finest pint by any stretch but they were cold and I was done in 😊

Kilkenny is everywhere in Canada. In Ontario you can regularly get 4 packs for ~$10. Not sure why it's so cheap and common here compared to the states. One of the best beers in the world.

Hands down,mate! It’s been my favourite beer since -02,but now alas it’s a rarity in the pubs here in Stockholm,Sweden! 😢 Went to Montréal in -15 and -16 for some games in the Bell Center and came across the Irish Embassy(on Bishop Str.) where the Kilkenny was top drawer!!

Last had a pint of this over 20 years ago, was everywhere in mid 90s along with Caffrey’s. Both gave you a sore head the next day, much worse than a Guinness hangover. The best thing about it, back in the day was it was over 5% but didn’t taste it. Great fun when you tried to walk.

Agree 100%, I drank it a bit along with Caffreys in the mid 90’s in N.Ireland. Kilkenny was definitely the creamier of the two and yes, both gave a bit of a head the next day!

Kilkenny is awesome, but there's really no comparing it to the dry stout. I had some in a couple bars in Kilkenny (town is my favorite eastern Ireland), I'm surprised you couldn't find it because it was everywhere and fantastic on draught. Guinness you get the smooth roast like a nice even coffee with a nonfat cream, Kilkenny is more like a nice toasted biscuit with some sweet cream on it. You can get Smithwicks in bottles in the states and it's pretty good too.

Kilkenny, has been my all time favourite Irish Red/Cream Ale since forever. I had my first in Victoria, Australia, and I've had several, on tap, in Melbourne, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Hamburg. I've also had the cans in Australia, China, Vietnam, and Germany, I love the stuff. HOWEVER, I do find that as you get late in the glass, it gets a bit thin in the body, and tedious after several pints. Which means I have to drink it faster than what I normally wish to, and THAT, my body doesn't like so much. All in all, its a good beer. I've also tried Beemish Red, but still I prefer the Kilkenny. AND of course, the glasses are killer!

Just visited Ireland for the very first time and was mainly looking to try all the best Guinness you've mentioned (went to Taffes in Galway, JJ Bowles in Limerick, Bowes & Mulligans in Dublin) but being from Canada, I was surprised not to see Kilkenny anywhere! We have it here all over and I drink it regularly. Of all places, I found it at Temple Bar when we went through to see the madness. Pint was awful, but I assumed that was because of the bar, not the brew. I'll have to come back soon to taste a proper Kilkenny once you sort out where the savage ones are at!

I first had Kilkenny in Venice, 2020, and it's by far the best pint I've ever had. Today I have ordered 10 330ml bottles from Beers of Europe for £20 +£7.99 for delivery. They need to roll this out in the UK!

I first had a pint of this in an Irish bar in Rome about 6 years ago. I'm not sure what made me try it but it was absolutely delicious. I've since had it in Lisbon and Spain as well as in Kilkenny itself - I even found a bar in Thailand with a Kilkenny tap, although unfortunately it was off. It's a shame I have never seen it on draught or even in cans here in England. Off to Ireland again in a few weeks and I cannot wait to sink a boat load of these beauties.

Kilkenny used to be my 'go to' pint...then the pandemic hit. After we got back to the pub (3 week lockdown here in Tassie ) they couldn't get kilkenny, so we switched to 'the black stuff' Plus.. the guru is correct...When I was in Ireland on holiday, I stuck with Guinness,because kilkenny was harder to get...whereas Guinness you can get ANYWHERE.!

I was on the craft beer bandwagon mainly through a mate of mine and I just got over them, love German beer though. Last week I had a pint of Guinness the first in 20 years or so and thoroughly enjoyed its creaminess, and no bloated feeling. I’ve seen Kilkenny in the past and decided to grab it and I had the same reaction as you 🤣 so creamy with a slight honey sweetness I had 3 cans in one night. I live in Australia and an hour from me is a small town that was established by Irish Settlers. Every year they have a festival and it was my first taste of Guiness, then one day I heard a lady ask for Kilkenny and they didn't have it on tap, but had it in the can. So I got one too! In Sydney the Guinness can taste shite most of the time but for some reason Kilkenny always taste good and never had a bad pint here . Also it’s true Kilkenny wasn’t served much in Kilkenny but a few places sell it like tynans.

Once I was told by someone that worked in Guinness, that kilkenny draugh was basically a smithwicks intentionally made in the same "stile" (carbonation draugh) as the Guinness... source is super reliable - was told that it is/was basically a crossover between smithwicks and guinness....!

The first time I had Kilkenny was in Qatar on pass from Iraq. I loved it! Might have been cause it was the first beer I had in about 10 months. But either way I wanted it when I got back stateside and I looked for about a decade. Aside from ordering it on the internet which isn’t he same so I passed, I couldn’t find it anywhere. Tonight in 2024 I walked into a tap room and there it was. The nostalgia with the first sip was a rush. The last person I shared this drink I can’t share with him anymore. I love this beer!

Whenever I'm in the UK I'm always hoofing back John Smith or Caffreys ale or bitter or whatever it is which shares a bit of the same qualities. Wish I could get more of that kind of thing on draft in Ireland but it just doesn't do well it seems. Kilkenny was on tap everywhere in Ireland very briefly but died off pretty quickly.

Ah, I'd love to find a pint of it. I was in Northern Ireland very recently, and had a few cross border trips all over Donegal but I never saw Kilkenny anywhere. Such a shame. Naturally I enjoyed the Guinness, and quite enjoyed a few pints of Five Lamps Red Ale and the Rockshore lager. Hopefully next time or I'll find it here in North Wales. LOVE your gig Guru, I know I'm late here but a few notes: 1) Lanigan's in Kilkenny has Kilkenny on Tap, sports/tourist bar but they have it and it's grand! 2) Boddington's comes to mind when enjoying a Kilkenny but KK is much, much more flavorful, 100% agree that it's fantastic 3) I don't get any Swithwicks vibe to it at all, fwiw

As far as I'm aware, the history of Kilkenny was that it was invented as an import drink for the European market, so I don't think it's a case of it falling out of favour in the Irish market so much as it never really having been in favour to begin with. It's a shame as it's a lovely drink. I wish it was more widely available here. My theory is that it's a provincial/loyalty thing: Smithwick's was historically the popular/dominant pint in Kilkenny city and Guinness in Dublin - Kilkenny was never going to unseat those established brands so it only really took off in new markets (abroad).

Many moons ago in Ireland in the pubs alot of people used to have a pint of Smith wicks and get the barman or woman not going to be sexist to put a Guinness head on it. They said it was lovely, so maybe that's where they got their idea from for making the kilkenny drink.

so the difference between a lager/ale and Guinness is that the G is nitro poured, which gives the head the 'creaminess' its just really tight bubbles. Kilkenny is a nitro poured red ale, so yeah, pretty much a smithwicks with a Guinness head! lovely stuff though :)

Non nitro stouts are available and are older than nitro stout. Nitro stout only came about in 1959. When Guinness launched its nitro draught stout to celebrate their 200th anniversary.
