As someone looking into purchasing a van I was shocked how people say it’s normal to expect problems with RVs. When you are spending over $130k for a small van I should not expect problems right away.

Watch a few of the “how it’s made” or “RV plant tour” videos. The workers aren’t just rushed, they are in full-tilt Bozo mode. You’ll see (Trailer/5w) kitchen cabinets go up in 5 minutes, all the trim in the entire RV in the same time, it’s scary. Also look at the RV delivery driver videos, there’s a reason why most manufacturers don’t mount TV’s, they fall off walls. The things the drivers see are also scary.

We have a 2019 Travato and we love it. The disappointment we have is that it looks like when they assemble the van they use power screw guns and a good portion of the screws are not straight in or too close to edges and the wood they are driven into is too thin to hold. Also Winnebago warranty is too short. Really not sure any other brand is any different. There are always trade offs. We had an issue with the Truma dial and called the company. The fix was to put a tiny bit of aluminum foil inside the knob so that it was out from the control stem a tad. Apparently the hole in the knob or dial was too deep. Also once the heat would not come on but we pulled out the fuse and put it back and it was fine.
@NealBritt
@NealBritt 3 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for the comment! Yeah we had that issue with the Ethos when it comes to the Truma, but luckily everything has worked great in our Travato. The warranty is short, unfortunately like you said, is that way on most of them. The warranty on the Volta Pure3 system is great though, so that is a huge plus.

Completely agree Neal. I work for a Fortune 500. There is NO WAY that my company would allow me to have such disregard for service. My whole role as a Materials Manager is to have my team proactively identify and mitigate risk, to get to the root cause of problems and prevent them in the future. Everyone should hold the RV industry to a continuous improvement standard. I wonder if part of the issue is the huge consolidation of the industry.... Anti-trust?!?! Sorry to hear about the issues that you had with perhaps some hasty buying decisions and lack of quality control. How a manufacturer could allow a unit to leave w/o finding all issues and how a huge distributor could not only mess up your LP system but then not catch it before selling it.... Quite shocking. I'd be fired if I allowed that in my job. I'm in the market for an RV and am doing tons of research in order to hone in on what I want and staying away from problem manufacturers. Thanks for the insight. Safe travels and best of luck.

Thank you for your comment! Seems like we have similar backgrounds and I'm right their with you, I would have been let go for sure if I ever let this take place. We have loved and learned, and have been tremendously happy spending more money on the Winnebago Travato we upgraded too. We are looking for a tow behind now to add to the fleet, and unfortunately they have even worse quality control since they are not built on big automotive brand chassis. Best of luck in your search. Remember to make a list of questions when checking out different rigs and if you decide on one, another long list of questions and really inspect it. Make sure they look at everything you ask them to and address each item.

@@NealBritt Thanks dude. I would prefer to tow my RAV4 so I can do day trips and not drive the rig while seeing the local area. However, nearly all of the Class Bs don't have quite the towing capacity needed which may lead me down the path of the B+/small Cs. However, I am not closing out the Class Bs just yet. Always good to know the pros and cons, understand what's critical and non-critical, and keep an open mind. :)
@NealBritt
@NealBritt 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah not sure the RAV4 weight but only a Mercedes chassis may be able to handle that weight (Mercedes chassis have a 5000lbs towing capacity on most). A class C would probably be best. That is why we are looking at a tow behind (already have a new truck to tow it), so while Britt is on travel nurse assignments I can get errands done during the day with a separate vehicle while she sleeps. Keep us posted if you end up getting something and reach out if you have any questions. We looked into every option and class, so we have gained a decent about of knowledge.

@@NealBritt Thanks Neal. So nice of you to offer up advice. So far I have somewhat narrowed it down to a Thor Compass/Gemini 23TE, Forest River TS2381 (don't think it can tow my RAV4 -- 3750 lbs), Winnebago Navion/View, Leisure Travel Wonder and a few others. One thing I don't want to do is make a hasty choice on a $100k+ config and then have major regrets. Have my concerns about the quality of Thor products, which are not helped by your first experience. lol

Thanks for watching and the kind words! Yeah, we love NM for sure. Since we had a first year model, I’m sure they worked out the majority of the major issues. It’s unfortunately the whole industry, only a few manufacturers are still doing quality work and have true QC. I’d recommend checking out Noovo Vans. They have been around for a few years, but truly blow all of the big manufacturers out of the water in quality and customer service. The team there is more like a family. We will be headed to their HQ in Vegas at the end of May to film some of their vans and the factory. We have spent the last few years searching for quality builders/ manufacturers and they are at the top of the list for us. noovolife.com/

Now correct me if I'm wrong; but the Lithium package is coming in over 26k by itself? I'm looking at the Thor Tellaro myself, but with a Jackery 1000, and Jackery 1500 and 6 - 100W Saga's the only upgrade that I can see here is adding the Battle Born LifePO4's with Victron's Power Management System and a HD Mechman Alternator for 1/5 less the cost.
@NealBritt
@NealBritt 2 жыл бұрын
That is correct. You can most certainly put together a similar or even better system together for cheaper. For us it was time constraints always being on the road bouncing across the country for Britt's travel nurse job. Eventually we will get a diesel Mercedes 4x4 and build it out ourselves. We will probably do a 6-8 lion energy LiFePO4 battery array (can get two 100watt lion energy for 1200-1300 when on sale at Costco/sam's) with as many watts of solar panels I can get on the roof, mppt controller, inverter,etc. If you have the time, know how, or are willing to learn, I'd definitely recommend saving money and building out a system yourself to save some good money.

I'm thinking of going truck camper route. Seems $100k plus is a lot of money to have problems and be stranded. Where with a truck camper, after high mileage, get a new truck and still have a place to sleep and cook, bathroom etc.. Trailers you have to worry about registration, pack wheel bearings , flat tire and parking. I've also heard since trailers dont have suspension things rattle loose over time from road vibrations.

I've only done a bit a research into travel vans, but my first takeaway was that a battery based system would never last even a hot day off of hook ups due to the power demand of the A/C. What sort of success have you had boondocking and running A/C on a hot day?
@NealBritt
@NealBritt 7 ай бұрын
In our Winnebago travato and Winnebago Ekko we have over 600amp hours of lithium batteries which get us 6-7hrs on one charge if running the air con set at 70 low (if we set on auto low we’d get longer, it shuts off when it reaches the set temp and turns back on when it needs to cool the area again). We have a second alternator in each that charge up the house batteries when the engine is on, so we can then turn the rigs on to charge the batteries up fairly quick. The system in our travato charges in about a hour to a hour & a half to full. Our Ekko takes much longer (Ekko is a 12v system and the travato is a 48v system, so that’s the difference in charge rates). If you have 600-1000amp hours of lithium batteries and a 12v ac you can run the ac 24-30hrs. But a 12v a/c is not as strong. So it all depending on your lithium battery bank size and if you have a 12v or standard 120v air conditioner. We primarily boondock and spend most of our summers in 100 degree plus weather. Never any issues. During the day we are always out exploring different areas, etc so we are charging the batteries while driving. We always run our air con over night on the auto low setting and sit at 70 degrees with plenty of battery to spare in the morning.
@sbslider6
@sbslider6 7 ай бұрын
Thanks for the prompt response! Do I understand right, that your Travato has 4 times the energy storage (in watt hours) as the Ekko? 12V*600 amp hours is 7200 watt hours, and 48V*600 amp hours is 28800 watt hours. The latter should last a VERY LONG time for sure ! @@NealBritt
@NealBritt
@NealBritt 7 ай бұрын
@sbslider6 You’re welcome. Our travato is the 3 cell Volta lithium system, which is around 700amp hour equivalent. Our Ekko is 640 amp hours. Our Ekko is a little more efficient, so it last a little longer if comparing AC run times. But the travato having a 48v system means it recharges incredibly fast from the second alternator. If we compare systems, the recharge rate from the 2nd alternator is the big difference. In our Ekko we have a 2nd alternator and dc-dc charger, so we can charge 20% to 100% in around 4hrs of driving (not 100% sure on the exact timing since we never truly pay attention to it or put it to the test for a video as of yet). In our Travato we can charge 20% to 100% in about 1 - 1 1/2hrs. That’s truly the big difference with the 12v to 48v systems. Another difference is the Ekko can charge while idling. The travato has to ramp up the rpms to charge, but has a feature to do that when parked.

We ended up getting into the Winnebago Travato 59GL and still have it, but rent it out. We are now in a Winnebago Ekko. Slightly bigger, but better for us and the two cats space wise. Plus it has a few things like a huge garage space for our e-bikes. on demand hot water that we really like, and the two twins that can be made into a large king size bed in the back. They consider the Ekko a b plus (not really a thing, more of a marketing gimmick my manufacturers lol) because it’s smaller than a class c, but slightly larger than a class b because it has the cut away chassis. We really like the ford transit chassis over any other two. Very powerful and rides amazing. All wheel drive is nice too.

the manufactures truly need to be regulated. the profit margin is exorbitant. they are making a ridiculous amount of money. i have the same issues with my Jayco Swift (sister van) - bed supports, table broken (made with staples), refrigerator not working at all (bad wiring) windows not sealing, and window screens with big gaps. Blind spots warning not working, the list goes on.. but at least I have been getting responses from both Jayco and LaMesa, so it seems they will correct the issues. I just have to be patient.

Sorry to hear that! Yeah, people have just let them do what they want for years now with very little accountability. At this point the manufacturers and the individuals that let them continue the terrible practices for years are both at fault. It's sad when people spend their hard earned money, be it 10k for a small travel trailer to 100k for a class B van, or even more for a big class A. All RV manufacturers have issues, but I believe after the first year of production the tend to handle the large ones. I would say go with what fits your lifestyle the best and feels right. I believe Jayco (Entegra) has hammered out many of the issues and you'd be fine going with either. Customer service was great with Jayco for us. I agree with all, besides our new Storyteller. We were just talking about this with a very popular KZbinr at an event. We are looking at doing videos addressing this and trying to get other people to get involved. Quality and build wise the storyteller is light years ahead of every manufacturer we've seen out of the hundreds we've toured. I would have bought an empty van and built it out myself, if it wasn't for simply not having the time between assignments and work related time constraints. Also, most of the issues besides the horrible build quality by lots of the manufacturers is the components, which unfortunately would be what I'd be using in even my own build. I simply do not have the resources to design and build my own water pump, heater, a/c etc. Because all of those, no matter the manufacturer, have issues. We both agree though and have discussed this many times. We are part of the problem for sure. We do not feel that way with the storyteller, as the build is solid. From the insulation, aluminum construction for the shelves, etc are not like we've seen besides with a few other mom and pop companies like ModVans. But with the others we have purchased, we are just funding them to continue to build poor quality products not worth the price they ask.

@@NealBritt Storyteller. 1000% agree. I took one out three months ago and for the first time was impressed. They are in a completely different league and I’m hoping the other RV manufacturers take notice with their build quality. I had no idea you owned a Storyteller. Very happy for you. We as consumers deserve to be happy with the purchases we make, especially at the level these Class B’s demand. Safe travels, my friend.

Thanks for the comment! Yeah if we all got on the same page we could make the manufacturers more accountable to put out better quality products for sure.

No, we both do not work 9-5 jobs. I always leave it vague because the crowd that watches our videos is older and does not understand my type of work as well. We have it explained in our bio and in early videos though. I work from my computer, the gym, and attend sports expos (I am a sponsored athlete. Meaning I am paid to "play" a sport and post on social media about the sports supplements that the company I am sponsored by sells). I am lucky that I no longer have to go to a 9-5 life consuming job and I get paid to do something I love. As for Brittany, she also does not work a 9-5 jobs. She is a travel nurse and works 3 days a week when on contract. It's now been almost three months that she has been able to not work and enjoy life. She usually works one contract then takes a month to 3 or 4 off, whatever she likes. It's all about making smart career choices, good investments when young, and learning to turn doing what you love into a "job". Lots of people do not grasp how easy it is to make money and not work their life away.

How can anyone fill a propane tank with NON-propane? That is a load of crap. poor excuse from La Mesa RV. 👎

Yeah it was crazy to say the least. I worked in the fuel oil and propane business, and never have ever seen this done. Don't even understand how it is possible because the attachments to fill the tanks are different size fittings. A mystery to me to this day haha.

Thanks! We have been busy preparing and cleaning our home for when we get married this summer (lots of friends and family coming out to stay with us) and for us to sell it. So we have been traveling back and forth slot. So we haven't been able to get anything uploaded recently. But we are preparing to visit some amazing dispersed public land camping spots we want to share with everyone, as well as our awesome ebikes we have coming next week!
